if you are a regular sized adult who can easily conceal the Ruger security 380 it is in my opinion and in many others opinions to be the best possible 380 you can get. Incredible accuracy, great capacity, flat shooting, smooth, easy to rack, etc.

Never heard anyone with a Bersa .380 that doesn't love it. Xtreme Defense really is the only way to go with .380 too. Would buy it myself if I could afford it, because nothing else compares. It's better than most other 9mm rounds. I believe they have .32ACP Xtreme Defenders now too. Hope to check them out when I get a chance too.

@@deucedeuce1572 I can confirm. I own and carry a Bersa Thunder CC Model. Bought it used (like new) for$200. 100% reliable, extremely accurate, above average ergonomics, small enough to be extremely compact, yet still shoots amazing. Phenomenal trigger (DA/SA) for such a small gun. Sights could be better, but honestly, that's my only complaint.

There has been a lot of renewed interest in a .380 concealed carry pistol. While carrying a 9mm is preferred by most, even I have pulled my G42 out again for CCW duty. Thanks for discussing the right ammo for carrying a .380 in a defensive pistol role. Just last night, I saw a YT .380 gel test. It compared the Gold Dot, Extreme Defender, and a similar G9 cartridge. Surprisingly, the Gold Dot did not meet the FBI standard for penetration. The other two did.

I think pocket guns in general are making a comeback. Definitely the .380, but also the .32acp and I hope the .25acp. I love pocket guns (real pocket guns) and when I talk to a lot of gun owners and non-gun owners about them there's a lot of interest in them. Hear a lot of gun owners say "I would carry every day if I had one of those"... and many non-gun owners say "I would start carrying a gun if I had one of those"... referring to smaller guns like the Baby Browning, Bernardelli .25 and .22, NAA Revolvers, Walther Model 9, Colt Jr... and other similar sized guns. (Guns I consider actual pocket guns and not G26's, which I consider to be too large for pocket guns, because I think a G43 or even a G42 is getting to large to be pocket carried).

Another excellent video as usual. For me, 380 guns need to be smaller. I see no point on carrying a larger .380 handgun that’s equal in size to a 9mm handgun. When I want a true pocket hideout gun, I’ll carry my Glock 42 or as of late… a Colt Mustang Pocketlite with 7+1 magazine with an X-Grip. Plus I always carry two spare magazines, regardless of the gun I’m carrying for the day. That’s just me. Carrying a .380 pistol that’s exactly the same size as its 9mm brother (G28 to G26), just gives the bad guy the tactical edge.

@@matthewlong7073 Really love the P938 and P238. I always wondered which came first. Did they make a 9mm and then shrink it down to .380... or did they make a .380 and then make it a little larger for 9mm? Either way, they're 2 excellent firearms. I'm very surprised the 9mm is identical in size except an extra 0.2" on the back to make up for bullet length and another 0.2" on the front to make up for longer recoil. It made me wonder why the .380 version even exists with the 9mm being only slightly longer... but with such a small gun, I can see why so many people prefer the .380 version. (I always wondered which one is more popular too).

Got me a very nice .380 now; Springfield Armory 911, original version. Still, that Girsan is mighty tempting. I have several carry options but my 911 is just the ticket when a discreet profile is the order of the day. Are .380s good enough? An endless debate, like M1911 vs Browning Hi-Power, AK vs. AR, etc. My two cents is that for the garden variety civilian defense scenario, absolutely yes. Here I’m talking about engagement parameters of less than ten yards, attacker is not wearing body armor, and defender doesn’t have to shoot through any sort of obstacle; there’s nothing between the defender’s bullet and the attacker’s body besides air and the street clothes of the attacker. Under those circumstances .380 should be just as effective as most other commonly carried centerfire handguns. The particular advantage of .380 is that it’s relatively light and easy to carry, and as long as you don’t go TOO light, it is easy to control for accurate follow up shots, which is essential for defense with about any handgun. The main problem with .380, besides the cost of ammo relative to 9mm, is lack of versatility. You need to engage at distance or shoot through a door or window or something, the limitations of .380 become more apparent. It’s still a potent little round that has put many people in the ground to be sure. My favorite flavors of ammo for mine are either Federal HST 99 grain (the older “hot” version which is now called “tactical”), or Precision One 90 grain XTPs; both are dependable, accurate rounds that should get the job done if needed.

@@ryanfletcher317 Appreciate the reply. I should have guessed that, but sometimes I miss the obvious. I'm very surprised they use the 9mm recoil spring in them. Many 9mm handguns will run with .380 ammo... but sometimes the recoil spring is too strong to allow .380 ammo to cycle reliably (or at all). It's kind of tough on their end though (I think), because if they make a lighter .380 recoil spring for it, people might accidentally (or intentionally) put them in their Glock 26's, 27's, 33's or any others with compatible recoil springs. As far as I know, Glock doesn't make different OEM spring strengths, but there are many aftermarket one's with both lighter and heavier springs... so they're probably not unsafe... but if I had to choose one to replace a too heavy OEM guide rod and spring, it would most likely be the DPM system... but I really wish they weren't so expensive though. There are many good metal Glock guide rods/springs for about $20-$30 that allow you to choose the weight and/or have interchangeable springs... so it kind of sucks to have to pay $75+ for a guide rod, even if it is better.

I’m not going to lie, I’m tempted to pick up a g42. But I truly prefer 9mm and prefer a compact size carry gun these days. In my mind a 380 makes sense to me when I need the smallest pistol to carry. Which is why I’d lean towards the g42 or bodyguard even with its trashy sights and horrendous trigger. Wanting the smallest you can’t have capacity too which are kinda things I’d prefer to have as well, hence why I prefer max capacity with minimal size (carry an X macro) and prefer 9mm vs 380. But if I were to carry a 380 I think I’d prefer the smallest package vs a larger 380 like these. I’m not here to dog on 380, it’s a pretty solid round for what it is and I think I’d trust it. But it’s kinda like do you want to shoot a beer with a 9mm or 10mm, I’d prefer 10. But plenty of people have taken down a bear with 9mm and other rounds with lower firepower. Same thing here but self defense nature. Much like most things in the firearm world, all about your own unique preferences. Love the stuff though keep it coming, gives me an opportunity to learn a little more about these guns. May need to acquire one in the future.

I think that's why so many people go with the LCP Max these days. It's still a good, small .380, so it doesn't defeat the purpose of having a weaker round... but it's still 10rds while only having a slightly longer grip than the LCP II. I love the G42... but the G43 is only slightly larger with 9mm... so I'm not sure if there's a reason to get a G42 unless you have a problem with the recoil. I still prefer the LCP (original) though if a person really wants deep concealment The LCP Max is an excellent gun, but it's larger grip does make it harder to conceal. If you carry Xtreme Defenders with a .380, it will be more powerful and more effective as a self defense gun than most 9mm would be with standard JHP ammo. It would be better in penetration, cavitation/damage and especially they're barrier blind. You can shoot through soft materials like leather and cloth and also harder materials like thin sheet metal/car doors, windows/glass, plexiglass, wood, drywall and many other things as if they're not even there. The bullet will still act about the same when it hits the target. It's an insanely effective round, but unfortunately, it's an expensive round too. That's especially true when you have to practice with them at the range to make certain they function in your gun. It's gonna cost like $150 just to go to the range... and then of course you need more to actually carry.

.380 only has problems in some pocket pistols. The lcp, max, glock 42 all have issues running hollow points reliably. The flat spots usually get caught onto something and causes jams. In 160 rounds through my lcp I had two failures with conical hollow points and the same with lcp max. My glock 25 has now had 446 rounds through it and ZERO failures. If you want a pocket carry .380, the extreme defense are the way to go. If you can't afford $28 a box ammo, the Remington compact handgun rounds work well and expand well, just make sure to double tap because they have low penetration.

@Thomas-el6eq I'm a US Army light infantry designated marksman vet. Shit placement isn't my concern. Drugged out criminals don't drop with a pop. There are video after video of crack, crank, meth, and heroine addicts taking seven or eight round to the center mass, and still being an active threat. You're not saving enough space in comparison to a microcompact 9mm and 380acp, to justify the lesser transfer of energy. By your tactics, I'd be 110% protected with a 22lr too. 380acp just doesn't have the ballistic capabilities that 9x19mm Parabellum does. It's better than nothing. But I still refuse to go lower than 9mm. Just a personal preference. Just doesn't match my preference. Compering 9mm to the biggest bullet is like compering a Matchbox car to a HMMV. I typically have a single stack 9 with no more than 8 rounds in it, and you wanna talk to me about shot placement? I'm extremely confident in my marksmanship capabilities.

Comparing 380 to 22 is fucking wild. One is 90-100 grain with the other is like 40 grain at best lol

@SuperCarsFromTheHood I compare 380acp to 25acp. Neither option meets the performance I expect to rely on to defend myself. You're down talking light bullets while the usgi 5.56x45nato rounds are 52gr steel core green tip fmj. The latter being a cartridge that fires a 22 diameter projectiles. 556 is 22mag on roids. In that case I prefer 7.62x51nato. Again. These are my preferences based on active duty experience. Sadly, I don't think they make a microcompact pistol chambered in 308win/7.62x51nato. I'll stay with what I'm comfortable with. You stay with what you're comfortable with. And we'll both be happy. It's a decision based on preference and comfort. I commend you for EDCing any caliber. And I sincerely hope that if the situation ever arises, that your edc is sufficient enough to eliminate the engaging threat. Throw the Sig Sauer P238 into the mix. That's on your 380acp microcompact level with a 2.8" barrel and tritium night sights from the factory. Crisp breaking trigger. They're pricey. But cost is key in the realm of self preservation, in my opinion. Why I carry my Glock more than the Ruger. Ruger I've had past issues with one of their pistols. Ironically enough, an LCP380 that the eleventh round fired, and the whole slide, barrel, and guide rod broke free and went downrange. I took it back to Academy, and traded it in for an M&P Shield 9 that was later stolen by an ex. Far superior weapons system to the LCP. And the faulty was consistent enough that Ruger discontinued the LCP and replaced it with the LCP II. Their repaired deviation of the original LCP which there was a big recall on for the same issues happening to other LCPs

@@GregoryGrone-vb7qe The slide, barrel and guide rod broke free and went down range? How the hell did that happen? Also, the LCP 2 is identical to the LCP in almost every single way. The only real difference is that the hammer is cocked more for a shorter, lighter trigger and then the trigger has the safety on it to guarantee drop safety. If you don't count the .22lr version, the LCP and LCP II parts are all interchangeable. The LCP II trigger is slightly wider too to make room for the trigger safety, but other than that though, they're nearly identical. You can swap slides on them (although it don't look nice)... and frames can be swapped too.
