Battle of Talavera: Britain and Spain Vs France | Total War Historical Battle
The Battle of Talavera (27-28 July 1809) was fought just outside the town of Talavera de la Reina, Spain some 120 kilometres (75 mi) southwest of Madrid, during the Peninsular War. At Talavera, a British army under Sir Arthur Wellesley combined with a Spanish army under General Cuesta in operations against French-occupied Madrid. The French army withdrew at night after several of its attacks had been repulsed.

Somewhere, Sharpe and his chosen men fight their way across the battlefield to steal a French eagle.

Steal is a strong word... it was found in the middle of a French column.

@@peterbray5383 Of course, what was I thinking. Sharpe would _never_ have stolen it, he said he wouldn't.
This has more to do with the Total War Engine graphics than the vid creator, but just FYI, Infantry of the period never fought the entire battle with bayonets attached as it makes loading muzzle loaders much more cumbersome and far more hazardous. Firing rate drops from 2-4 rounds per minute (depending on how good the unit was) to barely 1 as the infantry have to avoid cutting their face and hands open on their own bayonets during the loading and ramming process. Bayonets were only attached under direct orders when melee combat was imminent.

Big piece of metal as well a bayonet. Makes firing a musket that bit more inaccurate I guess.

Quite good video, only one thing the French did not attack in line, they attacked in column and then spread out in line when about to engage. Wellington caught them like this on a number occasions, including at Waterloo.

Also the British didn't fight in columns they fought in lines
Excellent! Love to watching these battles I've read about.
Never heard of the war before thanks for the information, Blessed Be.
Beautiful video
Very good presented.......
A lot of mistakes. 1- Talavera is a failed Wellington campaign countered by the French. His attack on an isolated French corps was far too slow and hesitant, giving the French time to bring reinforcements to the battlefield. 2- Nothing about the French night attack, which surprised the English. 3- The disorganization of the Allies led to a lasting quarrel between the English and the Spanish. 4- The battle was followed by Wellington's costly retreat, forcing him to abandon his baggage and wounded to avoid the destruction of his army. After that, Wellington was out of action for many months.

A night attack which, whilst it did take the British lines by surprise, was promptly defeated. Disorganisation of the allies? If you mean during the battle then it was column after column of French troops unable to withstand the rate of fire and steadiness of Wellingtons men. Meanwhile the Spanish on the right flank fled from their own volley and looted the allied baggage train. Cooperation between Wellington and the Spanish was poor yes, but that was primarily due to the utter incompetence of his Spanish counterpart General Cuesta. Wellington had also been promised supplies from the Spanish which he still had seen none of so I can’t imagine that added anything to the ‘spirit of cooperation’. He had to retreat because Venegas’ army hadn’t marched on Madrid as agreed, so the French were able to converge on Wellingtons position forcing a retreat

You should do one with Spanish armada vs English ships
Nice to see a battle of the Peninsular War. That was Napoleon's early blunder and a campaign where musketry and guerilla warfare coalesced.
Can you do another video of Napolean crushing Wellington in a parallel Universe on Earth-2? In that Universe, Napolean also crushed Alexander I. All hail Napolean!
Nice vid. I have read a bit about this battle, does not fit the vid but one must be right? Ish!!!?..?

The voice over can't pronounce correctly any of the names, even Wellesley. Makes me think it's just robotic. Thumbs down.

"Kooster" Would that be "Cuesta" then?
Grrr.. redub Welle-ez-ly to Wells-ly.. hurts my ears.. otherwise fine stuff
Well that was a confusing mess. Could not tell who was doing what, when or where. Ever use a top down map to show what is actually going on ? Oh, it is pronounce KooEhsteh, and cannons were Twelve Pounders. Horses are bigger targets and easier to hit, shooting standing up was just stupid. Kneeling is a smaller target and more stable. Aim at the horses keeps the guy with a lance and sword from coming close. Plus the horsemeat will keep men eating for days.
Boys? Let's load up and do some shootin! First Rayank! Fayer! Second Rayank! Fayer! Y'all doin real good boys!
