Battle of Sanada Maru (4-5 December 1614)
Фильм және анимация
During the Siege of Osaka, the shogunate forces besieged the Sanada Maru, a fort defended by the samurai commander Sanada Yukimura, Toyotomi's ally. The attackers were repeatedly repelled and Sanada's troops launched into several counterattacks against enemy lines, breaking them for three times.

If anyone's wondering what the 6 circles on the Sanada clan's banner is about, it represents the 6 coins needed to buy passage across the Sanzu River and through The 3 Hells to purchase your place in the afterlife in old Japanese Shinto/Buddhist mythology. It means he welcomes death and is fully ready to die, he's got the coins prepared and is not afraid to meet death in service to his Lord. Even the most basic and simple samurai clan banners all have deep meaning and purpose, I'm sure everyone knows the Takeda symbol, it's a very old symbol and represented either The 4 Winds and 4 Elements, or we're not sure if it represent ceiling tiles from the Silk Road that were brought to Japan during ancient times. The gaps between each shape are caused by the water that was said to have run through them.

I find it interesting to watch historical movies of the Sengoku jidai and see ancestors fighting in different battles. My mother's family fought for the Maeda Toshiie and grandfather lived with the last Maeda Daimyo in Tokyo after the Russo Japanese War. My father's mother's family fought for Toyotomi Hideyoshi in the same period. I realize that the Sengoku jidai was a very violent period of Japanese History.

More interesting point, the Sanada was split between 2 sides, Yukimura became Hideyoshi's son in law and Nobuyuki became Ieyasu's son in law. Yukimura sided with western army and Toyotomi, and Nobuyuki sided with Ieyasu during Osaka campaigns. It was believed that this was Sanada Masayuki's plot to preserve the Sanada clan during the chaotic phase after the decline of Toyotomi.

Begining is called "Sanada no Aka zoroe" in Japanese, which means The Sanada clan, a vassal of Toyotomi, known for their bravery, all wore red armor. They devised it so that the enemy and the ally can be distinguished in a moment. This battle was the last decisive battle between the Toyotomi clan and the Tokugawa clan. After the Tokugawa clan won, the 270-year isolation policy began up to Meiji era.

The Maeda were initially Toyotomi allies. However Maeda Toshie passing away in 1599 was one factor that led to Sekigahara in 1600, as there was no one with the power to check Ieyasu early in the game. The samurai were often loyal to a master, not a clan. As a result many retainers switched to Ieyasu after Hideyoshi passed away in 1598. Many of these former retainers - such as the Maeda, were all in Tokugawa service by 1614-15 at Osaka Castle. The Sanada played it cleverly by having sons on both sides, ensuring their survival.

The decoration on the placket of Sanada Yukimura's helmet is said to be ``Sanada Rokumonsen.'' It was Jochong In Korea, and in Indonesia, it was Istinggar. And they had slightly different shapes and sizes as they evolved.

@@21goikenban17 and look at Korea now after the us lost, it’s threatening nuclear warfare. Seems to me the us was justified in its war even though it lost. For a country to even consider its use after wwII is unfathomable. This is what we understand together, that some weapons are too great to ever be used again. This is why Japan is our ally, and I hope for many generations a close friend. We are not those who came before, we are those who came after those wars, and it is we who forge the future now.

After this war, the rule of the Tokugawa clan brought a long peace. The peaceful period of Edo led to economic growth and gave people the opportunity to receive education. I think Japan was able to lay the foundation for rapid development because the Tokugawa clan won.

at the battle of domyoji, goto mototsugu orderd to guard mountain pass that can enter plains of osaka, he got killed because he holding out against tens thousands of tokugawa's with only 2000 troops of his own. he fight to wait the delayed reinforcements but he got shot and decided to do seppuku. yukimura at that time is facing date masamune, but after couple of hours fight, he decided to retreat to osaka. yukimura's death is in the next day at the battle of tennoji. his original plan (as he is the strategist) was surrounded tokugawa from all flanks, despite their numerical different. he hopes that their attack will weaken tokugawa and hideyori will finish it by leading general charge from osaka. BUT the back flank attack got spotted, the osaka's ronnins who supposed to attack the flanks with yukimura's are attacking without the signaled time. seeing this yukimura decided to he himself must charge, before that he sending his son to tell toyotomi hideyori to charge also, but hideyori's charge got delayed. hearing that yukimura got killed, the morale of osaka's troops destroyed. the battle is lost

Having grown up playing a ps2 strategy game called Kessen I've always admired Sanada Yukimura. He was one of the prominent generals in that game that's mostly like what if history but it does center around Sekigahara and Osaka Castle battles. But a video game is what got me into history in general and now I love learning more. Something about the under dog in sieges always fascinates me. A similiar battle might be the knights of St John in Malta utilizing tech and strategy to defeat larger army. Only they won and Toyotomi lost but I still admire Sanada for sticking with them to the end.

Funny you mention that. Kessen, Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 and Total War Rome is what started my love for history. I started with Kessen, went to Dynasty Warriors then to Romance of The Three Kingdoms. Thanks to those games, I still have a love for history to this day. If you haven't played them yet, you might also like Europa Universalis 4 and Crusader Kings 3
