I just spent three weeks in Greece and Italy carrying the 12-100 and the 7-14 pro lenses and the EM-1 MK II. This lightweight setup covered 98 percent of the shots I wanted with no regret that I left the 40-150 Pro home. The 12-100 is an ideal travel lens which saves space and weight easily. For those considering the Olympus setup, I can very highly recommend it. For your first Olympus, go for the 12-100 Pro and the EM-1 MK II. This setup converted me from 45 years of Nikon.

That is exactly what I did. I sold Fuji XH-1 and went with the em1 mkii and 12-100 Pro. I do mostly adventure outdoor video. It is all I really need...nah, next lens will be the 40-150 and 2.0 teleconverter for wildlife. Very happy with going to m43 from apsc. It makes my rig so much smaller, lighter, and easier to use.

Thanks Jimmy! I am considering switching my 12-40mm f/2.8 Pro for the 12-100mm f/4 and this is the only review I’ve found that really goes into detail for different usage and looks achievable between the two.

Nice comparison. As you say, it all depends on your needs. This week I shot the 40-150R at night, 1/6th f5.5 and ISO800 ISO on a G80. The 12-100 would have given me ISO400 and the 12-40 ISO 200 (assuming I reshot at 40mm). A slightly cleaner photo would be nice but not a necessity as the noise wasn’t obtrusive. The ability to handhold at these shutter speeds is pretty crazy.

I'm a Canon user. Why do I watch your channel all the time? I guess my second camera is going to be an Olympus.

I was confronted with that difficult choice earlier this year, and while dual IS, longer focal range and the relative small size (for that focal range) of the 12-100 were tempting, I ultimately went for the 12-40. Faster aperture, cheaper price and the fact I shoot mostly under 40mm won out for me. No regrets. I still have the Zuiko 14-150 II as back up.

Either are great to be frank. We use both depends on situation. For low light photography that requires faster shutter speed, the 12-40 is a no brainer. But for video, shutter speed isn't a priority as mostly you can shoot at 1/60 or 1/50 anyway so f4 is great and that dual IS is just AWESOME! And for travel photography, you can use it for some night scenes without tripods!

Personally I use 3 lenses with my GX8 : a 25 F1.4, 90% of the time. A 75 f:1,8 for portraits or sometimes for street photos as well. And when I want to go with only one lens, a 12-40 f:2,8. That said, a 12-40 + 75 may be the best compromise in termes of versatility, speed and weight.

Nice review, If it helps. I took the Pen F & 12/100 f4 to SE Asia and three primes 17, 25, 45. Great package. No need for the 12/40 lens....The 12/100 is a really great lens for travel photography especially with the image stabilisation. Need to be a little more discrete or lighter package or require a faster f stop? Pop on a small inexpensive f1.8 prime lens, job done.

So true. I do think the 12-100 has its place and many may prefer the 12-40 2.8 because of the faster aperture and it's true if you need low light documentary works and good for weddings. However, like you said, if I need fast aperture and more discrete, I put primes on!

I received my 12-40 yesterday and it is on my Pen F. Loving this baby already very very tempted to buy the EM1X for it :)

Some more aspects missing in the video: The 12-40 has the same front diameter as Olympus’ Pro prime lenses. So you can use the same filters for all of them. The 12-100 is (electronically) parfocal which makes it the better video lens (let alone the better stabilization) The degree of stabilization you can achieve with the 12-100 is INSANE. Depending on your skills you can get sharp shots with shutter speeds of 2, 4, 8 or more seconds.

6:12 something funny going on there with your video work on the zoomed in shot, shaking crazy.

Jimmy, Thanks to the comparison video. It helps to understand a bit about new f4 Pro series against f2.8 Pro series. Few questions here would like to have your inputs, 1. In terms of barrel distortion, from the still images comparison, 12-45 is better than 12-40? Kind of surprised. 2. The colouration difference between f2.8 and f4.0 series are more than just noticable, care to explore into it more? 3. if there is a follow-up video on these lenes, which i wish there will be, maybe a better day, on tripod shoot through an opened window toward outside scene? cheers :)

Many Thanks for the beneficial technical Review and comparison that you have provided. Please advise which lens is better in photographing Video Clips and Weddings, and whether to get the 12-40 F2.8 Fast Lens or move to the longer reach 12-100 F4 slower lens.

When I owned 2 x EM1 bodies I also used a 12 - 40mm f2.8 and a 40 - 150mm f2.8. When I swapped to an EM1 mark II I changed lenses to a 12 - 100mm f4 and 300mm f4. I now use a Sony A7R4 and Oly EM1X and have gone back to a 12 - 40mm f2.8 and 40 - 150mm f2.8, as I own a Sony 200 - 600mm.

Another great review-thanks! Request: would you consider doing a review comparison of the EM1 Mark II vs the EM5 Mark II for non-sports and wildlife shooters? Say, for street and event photography? I’m aware of the weather sealing and some build differences but am trying to decide whether or not to get an EM5 ii as a second body. Thanks again😀

I have both, used the M5 a lot in the past, but had about 20-30% nad shots doing street photography. I now use the M1 80% of the time. Af more reliable. Better image quality, bigger battery and more comfortable grip, specially with a zoom lens. M5 with small primes ok. But can't walk 2 hrs holding it with a 12-100 attached.

For landscape photography, the 12-100 wins as a one lens setup. I also see the 14-40 and 40-140 pros are a lovely pairing for a larger range with subjects.

Just wonder whether the 12-100 is more of a videographers lens. Of course you have the holy trinity plus the 25 which makes for a heavy kit and probably not realistic for travel. That said I carry a Samyang 7.5 fisheye, 17mm, 25mm, 45mm 1.8 plus 9-18, plus 40-150 2.8 plus 2 camera bodies, all fits into my Lowepro slingshot. Drives me crazy whether I should have the 12-40 as well. Hang on a moment, Ive already got too much gear! but you know I use it all, just annoys me at times changing lenses, although the 40-140 stays on my EM1 and the primes are for the EM5mk2

maybe if you like the compression of a long lens and ans I saw you were mostly shooting at 100mm, you can consider trying out 75mm f1.8 for this kind of photography

in FF 24-70 is my all time go to lens, so MFT I would definitely choose the 12-40mm! that said, if I could own both, I would.

Well, a lot of the sample shots in this video is shot at 100mm and 40mm, the longest end of respective lenses. I did also some in the middle and at the widest end, 12mm. All perform well. this 12-100mm is a really sharp lens.

Thanks for the comparison! These were the exact lenses I was oscillating between to travel with to Sth Korea in the dead of winter. I have an EM1.2 and after much deliberation ended up getting the 12-100mm and will also take my 20mm f1.4 for indoor.. Will have to take it for a test run before leaving in January 2024 to get used to the weight hahaha.. Do i need to do any setting to engage the body IS to pair with the lens IS?

Well, already had the Panasonic 45-200 so got the 12-40, but both are terrific lenses. If upgrade is necessary, there is always the 40-150 ...

hello Red! i have a question - im considering to buy e-m5 mk2 + 12-100 kit. I love to shoot macro and have Raynox DCR 150 and 250 macro lenses... Will it be okay to use with 12-100 for macro photography?

Another excellent video, JC. It would be interesting to see how the 12-40 would compare when using either of the tele-extenders. I seem to be watching a lot of your videos this holiday weekend (US 4th July) haha. I think when I get my Oly body (I need to try in person the EM5 Mk III and the EM1X), the 40-150 will be the 1st lens of choice. Sedcond lens may be the 12-40. Does the 12-40 work with the tele-extenders?

Arthur Leyenberger thanks Arthur! Both are great cameras and great lenses. Depends on what you shoot generally, EM1X is quickest and has the biggest buffer for burst shooting of you do a lot of animal and action stuff :) 12-40 won’t work with extenders

I own the 12-40 2.8 for all day shooting. But I think 12-100 will be great for travel photography and so on...

You said the 12-40 has no image stabilization. Don't you get 5 stops of image stabilization when using the 12-40 on the E-M5 II body that you show in the video and 6.5 stops with the 12-100?

Hi Jack, yes you are right but there are some M43 bodies, in Panasonic still doesn't have IBIS and if you use the 12-40, it won't be stabilised and it will mean you need to use a tripod :)

How unruly is this on a Pen F? I am thinking of the 12-100

When I get my Olympus camera 12-100 f4 and 12-200mm are going to be the first two lenses I'll get. The versatility and the reach will help me improve my photography skills. The next one would be the 17mm f/1.8 for street photography.

Nice, personally, I would recommend 12-100 and 17mm, there are some overlapping between 12-100 and 12-200. when you like the system, invest in the 40-150 and a MC-20 converter, that will give you 300 (equivalent of 600mm!)

I find the 12-40 is useful if you alredy have or plan to buy the 40-150 2.8 lens. If not, the 12-100 gets you covered in most situations with just one lens, even if you don't get that much aperture.

Though i'm a panasonic user, but still I enjoy your m43 review. I still cant understand why so many even a famous youtuber with million subs said m43 is going to distinct as fullframe mirrorless announced. However keep the work on, Jimmy :)

12-40 and PEN-F is designed for use with smaller lenses, especially primes.

Performance issues have to be balanced with weight. Putting that 12-100mm Pro lens onto an E-M1x body adds a lot of heft to what already is a big rig by M43 standards. I agree the compression and reach off the 100mm lens is nice to have, but the f/2.8 is also nice when you are in a low light situation, like visiting a church in the evening!

Hi do you still have the 15% off with Olympus deal?

The only way not to confuse people was to release a 12-100mm f/2.8 and offer it as a kit lens with the silver limited edition :)

If you often need to go above 100 then keep what you've got. If you don't use the 14-150 or 40-150 much, why not trade them in towards the cost of the 12-100? Similarly if you don't like changing lenses then trade them for the 12-100

@@cmartin_ok Mmmmm the 40-150 f2.8 Pro is a spectacular lens + it works well with the x1.4 converter at f4. So far, the 14-150 has been awesome, fantastic quality results and very light to carry. My 12-40 Pro gives me a reasonable f2.8 low light range, along with the 40-150 f2.8. I did think about selling the 12-40 Pro + the 14-150 but the 12-100 reviews just did not inspire me enough to speculate on it.

@@alanplatt888 Ah, the 40-150 Pro.... didn't realise you had this and not the ordinary 40-150. In that case, I'd stick with the 12-40 pro and 40-150 pro lenses. If you're happy with the 14-150 then there would be little point in changing it for the 12-100 unless you have the money to spare

@@Red35Photography I sold my12-40 because I have the 14-150 walkabout. I now also own the 12-100, hopefully the f4 IS will compensate for the f2.8.

In the context of MFT, I would opt for the faster lens - mainly because I can get away with a 1 stop lower ISO setting to get a certain shutter speed (if subjects move too quick for the IS to help at all). But the 100 mm (giving a 200 mm FF equivalent) is something to consider … too expansive to buy both, though … ;)

Appreciate that and I do agree especially when you are more a photographer than a videographer. Film making doesn't require faster shutter speed so f/4 is always a good lens to work with, couple with the dual IS, it's just super smooth. In some travel situations, the 12-100 is also more superior due to dual IS too as you can dump the tripod if you just want some general night scenes.

Disagree. Not having the further reach prevents lots of shots. F4 is good enough daylight, until blue hour. Then I switch for a prime at night. F2.8 is still not fast enough for night street photography (1/200s) gives u Iso 6400 which is bad on olympus. Unless u have new OM1 body

I have 12-100/4, 75-300 II, 3 fast prime lenses and very surprised 12-100. lens for 90% photo/videos, it great for travelling.

If you need top quality optics, Pro lenses, either 12-40 or 12-100. They are both better than 12-200. If you need speed, 12-40, if you need flexibility 12-100. If you need to carry one lens for an journey, 12-200.

I take pictures in low-light situations almost all the time. Clubs, pubs, concerts. In most cases 12-40 f2,,8 is offering everything i need for those situation, with a slight bokeh if needed. The problem starts on open air festivals where 40mm (80mm) is not enough, while some of the gigs take place during the night. However, since i prefer to carry more compact lenses, 12-100 F4.0 will not fit.

Have a look at the 75mm 1.8. I love it for big stage concerts and it is brilliant in low light and very sharp. The only drawbacks are no manual focus clutch and the focus throw is quite large.... lots of turns of barrel. I moved to primes for low light pub, club gigs too.

I like your videos very much, informative and pleasing to look at too! One thing is seriously missing though, we need Charleen more! ;) it is a joke, but very true!

I have been using the 12-100mm for a few weeks now and it is simply sensational! The bokeh at the long end is just stunning, the sharpness, in pics and video is amazing and the stabilization on the GH5 even without using the IBS (it's disabled by default) is even better than the DUAL IS using Panasonic lenses! It is the single best do-it-all lens out there IMO and will be selling my primes. Only downside is it is heavy. have a look at y latest clip for a sample of what this lens can do on the GH5... The hard stops on the focus ring is also nice, it's a much more user-friendly lens than my 35-100mm F2.8 Lumix and it is far smoother! I have had to put a small foam-spaced on the IS switch so as to not accidentally turn it off, I can't think of a situation where you would need to turn it off anyway - handheld. Great review as always. AAA+++.

thanks for the infos, I'm actually waiting for a GH5 I just bought, right now I use a GX9 with MB+1.8 Sigmas, and I'm really struggling about choosing a PanaLeica 12-60 F2.8-4 or a 12-100. I was thinking a little towards the PanaLeica because of Dual IS and DFD, as I'm planning to use as the daily AIO lens, what do you suggest from your perspective and usage of the olympus lens? @@davidecava2654 Well, that depends if you want that range. It's handy for video as a location lens since you can get close and wide easily. If you use manual focus (we do that all the time), all Olympus manual focus mechanism is way better than any Panasonic lenses, most film makers will agree and hence we've seen a lot of GH series videographers use Olympus lenses because of that.

Davide Cava Trust me, I useBoth Panasonic and Olympus lenses, and the IBS on the Olympus 12-100 alone is better than both the dual IBS on the GH5! It’s also lightning quick to focus, faster than my 35-100 Panasonic. Check the latest clip in my channel to see how good the 12-100 is for yourself. Soooo versatile snd SHARP!

They are totally different breed. f stop allows you to freeze motions with faster shutter speed at the same ISO setting. So the question will be, do you need to freeze motions in low light situations or you can do without, for instance, certain landscape or interior shots. IS also gives you better video stabilisation even, with IBIS on.

The 12-100 is a superb lens. The background blur at wider angles is beautiful and the focal range is so damn useful.

These zooms are better with a SLR-style body than a rangefinder style body. I love use small premium primes on the PEN-F usually :)

@@Red35Photography Good morning. yes, right! the 12-40 is marginal on the pen-f. I use the body jacket CS-47B and the 12-40 lens feels better on the small Pen-F. I have the 17mm 1.8 & the 45mm 1.8 prime lenses too and I love them. In some situations the 12-40 lens is good to use when I don't want to carry much on a little spontaneous walk for example.

the problem with these pro zoom lenses is the veiling flares that happen when you shoot at bright lights ie. Sun. The lens coatings are good for improving sharpness but are prone to flare. I sold my 12-40 pro to "downgrade" to a mzuiko 14-150 II lens and it has less flare blobs and veiling flares when shooting into bright lights or sun. the red blobs that show up int he 12-40 are not there in the 14-150II even more so when stopping down past F8 to F22. I am a happy camper ever since I switched andI get more zoom range on a everyday-carry basis.

I have both lenses and have to admit that the 12-100mm is the one that spends most time on my camera. It is such a versatile lens. I have managed sharp images at 10 seconds handheld (still not easy to achieve). For low light situations where you have moving subjects (i.e. wedding in a dark church) then the smaller and lighter 12-40mm is the better lens to use. Both lenses are very sharp and give excellent results.

Would the 12-100 fit on the Panasonic GH5 and GH5s

Yep I had the same dilemma, but depends on what you're shooting. For me 12-40 is my workhorse, for events, sports and even some environmental portraits, but 12-100 is the perfect lens for travel. I can go to a week trip and take nothing, but this lens.

Yes, the 12-100 is incredible in its own right. Not discounting the brilliant 12-40 which is a very nice pro lens but this, together with the dual IS, is just superb! If you don't need that high shutter speed, this is hard to beat.

@@Red35Photography yep, for me now is 12-40 and 40-150 PRO as a working combo, but waiting for a good opportunity to take only 12-100 PRO :)

Thanks for this comparison which cleared out the air of purchase confusion that Olympus tried to impose on me with these two. I have the EM5MkII, a 14-150 II and a 45 f1.8. While the 45 f1.8 is great for low light and portraits it does not let me shoot my wife across the dinner table at restaurants (and many such similar situations esp close indoors and cramped spaces) much to our chagrin and despair. Also the 14-150 II stock lens I feel is great & sharp only towards the telephoto end of its zoom, and works very poorly in the slightest hint of low light, both of which limit its use for me. That is why I feel the 12-40 f2.8 is what I need to address issues with my existing two lenses. The focal length & low light usability, the speed, sharp landscape & portrait all rolled into one. I had momentarily got sidetracked by the newer 12-100 f4.0 but thanks to you, I now know where my thousand-ish dollars should go. Cheers!

I picked up a 12-40mm pro for £300 which is cheap. And it's a brilliant lens!!

Depends if you need certain features like Live Composite, and better low light and insane stabilisation. Also, bigger sensor will give you even greater compression too. But if you are a casual traveller that wants some good quality photos, the RX100 series is great. I do have it as a backup in my bag,

If I could afford it, (because I already own the 12-40mm), I'd go for the 40-150mm f/2.8 PRO lens anyway, I dont see the point in the 12-100. I think that was always my intention. Of course, I cant afford it atm anyway - so there goes that argument lol! I really wish the 75mm f/1.8 was weather sealed, that would be a definite yes if that were the case, especially given its average 2nd hand price these days.

@@Red35Photography Thanks I am currently looking at the Nikon 28-300. As you can do a bit off everything with it and it's like 400-500 second hand in great condition. Plus it's a great travel lens on a full frame and crop camera's. And plus the Tamron version off the 28-300 is quite light. Literally heading to central London to do some street stuff well my own interpretation with my Nikon D5500. If I get some down time I shall try and join your Photography walks. P.S do you and keep up the great work. Peace

12 to 100 my pick nd you are using my camera 5mkii as well rather impressed with the results an as always a great report with the funnies on the end awesome stay safe and see ya (which I can now ha ha )

Does the lense stabe work with Panasonic cameras?

it works as lens IS only but not combined. You can only use either the body IS or lens IS but not both, unless you have an Olympus/OM body, same with Panasonic lenses on Olympus bodies.

What would you recommend? M.zuiko 12-40mm f/2.8 + 40-150mm f/2.8 or 12-100mm f/4?

What do you photograph? 12-100 is more a travel all-in-one and the 2.8 lenses are aiming for speed shooting.

@@Red35Photography I am planning to film choir / orchestral performances in churches / concert halls probably on a loaned GH5S at first. This would be along M.zuiko 7-14mm that I am planning to buy as such things require extremely wide angle of view, but I guess I would sometimes need more reach. However, ultimately it would be nice if it could supercede my Sony RX10 IV which I use as my everyday camera, but for what I have just described it is simply not good enough.

For what it’s worth (this is Tracey, btw), my experience from shooting in churches and concert halls is that they’re usually quite dimly lit, so I would probably say go for the speed. 40-150mm gives you a pretty good range and if you’re getting the 7-14mm, maybe get a fast prime to slot in the middle of the two. Best advice I can give you is to test them all out and see what suits you better :). Good luck!

the video looks good the stills do look poor. is this the fault of the camera or has it seomerhing to do with how you implemented them ?

LOL, wouldn't that be great but then it will be a huge M43 lens

12-40 all day, you can get cheap as chips lenses like the 40-150R for when you need more reach, and it's plenty good enough IQ-wise. But there's not much outside of primes that can compete with the 12-40. The FL between 40 and 100 is about the least interesting to me. Most people now have bodies with IBIS, I can hand-hold the 12-40 @0.4 and get pin sharp shots, so that point was over exaggerated.

@@jonbarnard7186 Nothing Personal Jon But You may Need Glasses I havent seen anything Sharper then the 12-40mm aside from Limited few Primes Or Maybe you have perfectly Tuned eyes for 12-100mm and Me 12-40mm Pro L :-) L

@@chevypowertogo-9070 Well yes, funny you should mention it, my eyes aren't getting any better. You are probably correct about the sharpness. I look back on the architectural shots I took in Chicago a few years ago with my 12-40, and I have to admit that lens is a great performer. But, actually, that's not why my 12-40 has been pushed to the back of the shelf. I am a bit obsessive about carrying the lightest and smallest kit I can with my EM1mkii. I like to travel, and when I traveled with the 12-40, which I did for several years, I always felt the need to take a longer zoom or a telephoto with me. I have to admit though, the 12-40 paired with the 75 1.8 is a tempting travel combo. I think I could live with those two lenses. I just don't happen to own the 75. A couple of years ago I walked around NYC with the 12-100 mounted on a Pen-F, and some of the shots look just as sharp as the 12-40. But then I could be going blind as you note.

For me it comes down to size 📷📷📷 why buy a mirrorless and then stick 'massive' lens on the front? Small super sharp primes all the way..... Ps when are you going to set up a photo walk????

Cheers Mike for watching. Well, it's all about range. this is a long range lens and it's still small compare to anything similar in APS-C or FF. Look at those new FF mirrorless lenses, they are easily double the size and triple the weight!! Photowalk? Yes I am trying to organise one soon, stay tune, I will most likely announce it via our Facebook page.

12-100mm have a problem - diffraction is clearly visible already at f8

ori mori Hi Ori, yes the dual IS (Sync IS in Olympus terms LOL) does work with E-M5 II with 12-100 Pro. As demonstrated in this video. Works for both stills and video.

The 12-40 is okay in average low light without a flashgun. Very sharp lens but has its limits.

12-100mm winner

Get the sharper lens and use your feet more. Honestly the best use for 100 in MFT is shooting birds up in high trees apart from that the constant f2.8 with its much more beautiful bokeh, low light ability, chromatic rendition is the winner.

I agree, since I don't shoot birds, I'd go for the 12-40mm.

i have both. on a recent trip, 12-100 was the only lens i took to death valley National park. i would not have been able to get this shot of the Mountain sheep with 12-40.. instagram.com/p/BpyGXE7DMws/ the longer reach was a distinct advantage. given the fantastic ibis omd em1MII , low light performance is great even on f4. What is irreplaceable is the subject isolation with wider fstop on 12-40; but the longer zoom range on 12-100 can make up for it to a certain degree
