Btw, the swedish units are local raised, so during the battle you could see for example that the finish cavalry or "dalkarlarna"taking heavy action. Keep up the good work!

There is a story of Charles XII I like. Always leading from the front, he chased a small Saxon cavalry unit into a city. He and his men were so close on their tail, the city guards had no time to close the gates. In full charge, they reached the courtyard of the city's keep. Where Charles and his men found themselves surrounded by its Saxon garrison. Thinking he was just an ordinary captain or less "due to his plain clothing" the Saxons didn't realize it was actually the Swedish king. The two sides observed itch other for a time, but neither engaged. Eventually, one of the Saxon soldiers up on the keep ramparts. Readied to fire his cannon into the Swedish cavalry. Upon seeing this, the Swedish king dismounted and rushed up the stairs. Slapping the torch from the soldiers arm, and proceeded to lecture him in German. There was no fighting, and the garrison surrendered shortly after. Charles is remembered in Sweden as "The Soldier King" and was one of Europe's last Kings to lead from the front. When pressured to marry to secure his line of succession, he proclaimed "I am married to the army".

@MFX_media I don’t think we have the evidence to either agree or disagree with that statement. He was apparently drawn to Princess Sophia of Denmark (he named his royal yacht after her) and he once said, “As for myself, when God gives peace, I will also marry. But I will seek a wife not for reasons of state, but one whom I like well and believe I’ll love forever.” In the end, it just becomes pointless to think about.

Random fact: Charles dressed much like his common soldiers with a carolean soldiers uniform, and unlike his european counterparts Charles even skipped the wig. There's an account from a polish farm girl who wrote in her diary, that a set of soldiers on horseback arrived at their farmhouse. The captain of the guard approached her father and said that the king of Sweden had need of their home to live in. When the father asked when the king would arrive, the Captain replied that he already had as there was no sign to distinguish charles from his Soldiers. Charles is a really interesting character due to the way he dressed, his near non compromising nature and tactical genius. I hope Kings and Generals will dig deeper into it the next episode. : )

On this channel, I have seen bigger armies get bested by numerically inferior opponents due to tactical prowess. I have seen great nations fall, due to being unable of properly raising their armies due to internal strife and political corruption. But this must be the first time I have seen the incompetence of a nation actually get them defeated, while still having battlefield superiority on most levels. I mean, one would think that having an uncrossable marsh in the middle of the center wing, and a ton load of canons pointing towards it, would let you lend renforcements to your already numerically superior left and right wings without much problem. But no. Still got runover. And then they run away leaving all of their canons behind.

I like the story of how he obtained the crown, and I mean the physical golden object. The keys to the vault at Wawel were held by the senators at the time, one key per senator, six in total I believe. And to brake open the door to said vault was considered such grave sacrelige, he would never be seen as a legitimate ruler. But Augustus did not care about proper procedure. He got to Kraków first by pure luck; Saxony was closer to the Commonwealth than France, obviously (poor Conti was later halted by the garrison at Gdańsk, outside the city, and couldn't even rest after the journey). He then went to Wawel castle and, I imagine, said something akin to: "Alright, chaps, plenty written about the door here; naught of the wall itself, though". He then proceeded to break the brick wall (I like to think it was with his bare hands, he was known as 'the Strong' for bending horseshoes easily) and steal the crowning jewels.

It is difficult to put a good narrative on some of these events, hence they get lost in history, I’ll make an attempt. Ultimately the power in europe shifted to the periphery and these wars are part of the story how that came to happen. These nations in their golden age getting boxed in by other nations who are trying to hold on or get an edge. The competition is fierce, they fight and decline. There are tremendous achievements being made that are copied and improved by the powers on the periphery who expand outward in the other direction.

@@Norilius Not really. The war lasted for 21 years against multiple great powers. Frederick the Great had better odds resisting his enemies than what Sweden had and his war only lasted 7 years while his army had been exhausted by all the fighting. Stockholm was never taken by the enemy, but Berlin was. And the enemy never really managed seriously to put Swedens existence as a country under direct threat even during Sweden's darkest hours in this war. For Prussia was the situation more dire and Frederick thought of committing suicide. So Swedens empire was hardly a glass cannon. It started the war with one of the largest and also best armies in Europe. Parts of this army was destroyed in Russia. And a new army was created. This army did won multiple victories against numerically superior forces at places like Helsingborg and Gadebusch. Until it was encircled and destroyed by a superior force of multiple enemy armies from different countries. And a final army was created for the purpose of invading Norway in 1716. Most of the men in this army was men in typical military age, and parts of the army consisted of veterans from earlier battles. So Sweden had hardly ran out of manpower even as late as 1718 when the 2nd invasion of Norway started. So even after 18 years of war and the black death haunting Stockholm was Sweden able to create a new army from scratch. And it could probably create another one if needed. So the glass gun talk is nonsense. If a country can create 3 new armies in the middle of a war then it isn't a glass gun.

@@Norilius Sweden fought a 21 years long war to defend an empire scattered around the baltic sea with a long border. A poor country with low population density and its biggest city laid in the Baltic. And as I said Swedens enemies were relativly stronger, than what Prussias enemies was to Frederick. Prussia looked doomed after 5 years of war, when the new Tsar in Russia saved Frederick. And yet, did Sweden last 4 times longer than that. To me this proves that Swedens war organization had a surprisingly strong endurance. It was never meant to fight long wars with its limited resources. And yet it did do so, and pretty succesfully given the circumstances. And sure did Prussia have some disadvantages too. But that is not what we are talking about. You said that Sweden was a glass gun with endurance. If a country with less than 2 million people manage to fighting against Russia with 14 million for 21 years isn't endurance then what is?

I'm so happy to see really slickly produced, well done presentations about the Great Northern War like this. There's not a lot of "general public friendly" content to draw people into learning about this period and conflict (also not a lot in English) so I'm happy to know great content like this can reach and pique the interest of many people.

It covers the whole campaigns, battles, skirmishes, OOB, pictures of uniforms of all the regiments involved. I you want a covering of The Great Northern War i can find it and show it to you guys if you want some coverage of how everything started. Battle of Kliszow my hometowns regiment was there Västmanland. And at the final pushback with the great Magnus Stenbock at Helsingborg! You guys are great and the guy who is narrating is doing an excellent job keeping one hooked. And all the animations. This channel is what i wanted history channel and such to always be like. When Charles died, the nobles took over Sweden too in 1721. And since then the country went into sh1t. It lost 4 wars out of 4. Finland was lost. Germany was lost. And it is kind of a miracle that it did not happen earlier than 1809 given how terribly bad they ruled the country. So yea, nobility is bad. They are like the opposite of King Midas. As soon as they lay their hands on something it turns into SHlT

Great work, as always, but I have to ask why you keep referring to the Swedish infantry of the period as "Grenadiers". In the Narva video, you described the entire infantry complement of Charles XII's army as "grenadiers", and here you say that he landed with 3000 of them. A Carolean infantry battalion of 600 men would not have more than 40 grenadiers (usually 24, the last three files of either flank of the battalion when drawn up in line). They did sometimes group the grenadiers of several regiments into small units for specific missions, as was common in most of Europe, but this was rare and I doubt the entire Swedish armed forces could muster even 1500 grenadiers, let alone 5500 of them.
