Count Adalbert II von Winterthur had not only Swabian but more likely Swiss warriors from his Grafschaft (domains) in Thurgau, Aargau and Zürich which might explain that they were ferocious fighters since the Swabians themsleves from Swabi aweren't much of good soldiersas later the Swiss Swabian wars showed in which the Swiss Confederates destroyed several Swabian Knight armies.

One Emperor of the holy german empire fled vom norman king Robert Guiscard, who sacked rome. Later Guiscard started to conquer the east roman empire and came close to conquer it.

Normans in general were very interesting, compared to other medieval nations. It's impressive just how much they did not like to live in peace and often look to undermine their neighbors. England, Italy and Antioch. Who knows how many more Norman mercenary regiments across Europe who failed to be mentioned in the history pages.

Wow, those Swabians fought with incredible determination & tenacity despite it all, quite impressive, its not often you hear of troops being completely surrounded, charged on all sides fight to the bitter end instead of breaking- and I'm inclined to believe the story if both sides confirmed they fought to the death.

@@revanofkorriban1505 Swabia is the homeland of the Staufer dynasty with famous emperors like Barbarossa and is full with castles of all the knights and nobles that lived there. Swabians were known for being good fighters, the Reichssturmfahne of the Emperor was held by Swabians which came with the right and honor of being the dangerous first line of a knightly cavalry attack. Also a lot of the famous 15th century Landsknechts came from Swabia. So I think their warrior spirit led to this last stand, others would have panicked and would have been slaughtered like lambs.

@@revanofkorriban1505 History is full of stories of people that give up or attempt to surrender in these situations. There were choices to be made, and they chose to fight. The unmitigated gall of a coward behind a keyboard talking down fighting men from 1000 years ago is a brilliant demonstration of you being a real joke of a person. Is your ego so fragile you have to play tough guy over dead men that could have torn you apart with their bare hands? What a complete clown!

The consistent rise in quality video to video is something truly unique to this history channel alone.

Without these types of videos on youtube I would have never learnt so much about history. Not just battles, it teaches you about the politics, how cultures spread and influenced lands and languages through conquest and war.

Imagine if you could go back in time and give ancient commanders and troops these videos to watch. They probably would’ve become power houses.

They had already been assimilated! This happened to them everywhere. Either expelled or assimilated. So he Normans actually achieved nothing. No matter whether they were Vikings or Normans. This was generally the case with the Scandinavians. They were ultimately insignificant and did not permanently colonize anything.

Very interesting enough, the decisive battle at Civitate was one part of the Norman's grand conquest of Italy. Unlike William's campaign in England a few years later, multiple rulers/conquerors played an independent role that gave the Normans the upper hand in obtaining Southern Italy. This was unplanned and disorganized, but ultimately, the conquest was complete.

While it only took Hardrada to put indirect pressure on King Harold to weaken England's forces to allow William to eventually beat them in one single battle at Hastings to completely transform England it took decades for the Normans to slowly transform Southern Italy & the Italian isles like Sicily. The Normans had to wait longer while their rivals fought amongst themselves or were besieged by the Normans after Civitate. From 999 to 1138, for the Normans in Italy to complete their conquest versus William's conquest 1050s to 1060s.

Wait you think Mediterranean men can't have blue eyes or blonde hair? Augustus Caesar was blonde. The darker shades associated with Sicilians is more due to the Arab/Berber heritage than anything. Arabs ruled over Sicily far longer than Normans

The Normans in S. Italy led by the de Hauteville brothers is one of my favorite periods in history. It's amazing how these Few Norman knights dominated the battlefields of S. Italy and Sicily with their disciplined and ferocious cavalry charges. It's told that after the Battle of Civitate the victorious Normans, much to the shock and bewilderment of Pope Leo and his Bishops, knelt before the pontiff begging Gods forgiveness. Though opportunistic strongmen and brutal warriors, these Normans were nonetheless faithful Catholics....in their own seemingly paradoxical way. Hope to see History Marche cover these events further.

You really have no idea what youre talking about, do you? The FACT is that the Normans kicked both the Muslims and the Byzantines out of Sicily and S. Italy respectively. Though I wouldnt be surprised, in the least, to learn that that wasn't the History YOU were taught in school. Perhaps God favored them over Mohamed's followers after all, eh?

Unless I'm mistaken, the Swabians didn't use two handed swords, which appeared a couple centuries later. From what I can tell from a quick search, the sources do mention that they were great swordsmen who liked to fight on foot, but nothing suggests they weren't using one handed sword and shield as people did in their time. They do say their swords were longer than usual and say they could do great damage, but I don't see a mention of them being two handed, and I do expect people of the time would mention it if they were the only ones to fight with two handed swords, without shield

@@caniblmolstr4503 I might be mistaken with another battle in the same period but if I recall these Swabians were not formidable just for their discipline, experience and strength, but for a kinda prototype state-of-art armor they wore on that occasion. At first Normans tried to hit them but all the blows bounced back and seemed unstoppable. But after a while they noticed that when they rose the arm to strike the armpit was almost naked and vulnerable, so started to aim at the armpit, thrusting rather than slashing. From there the tide of battle turned in their favour and the arrive of Richard's cavalry sealed their fate.

@@sp1d3rm0nk3y33 there were some pretty ingenious innovations that made the Normans become a formidable heavy cavalry force from a heavy infantry force. 1. Couched lances - this technique was so important that its criminal how its often overlooked. It helped Normans to use longer and heavier weapons a horse. 2. Chain hauberk 3. Kite Shields Further the administration things by William Longsword helped make Normandy into a well governed unit
