Battle of Ankara 1402 Ottoman - Timurid War DOCUMENTARY

Despite heavy casualties during the battle of Kosovo (1389) against a broad alliance of the Balkan peoples led by Serbian lord Lazar and battle of Nicopolis (1396) against European Crusaders led by Jean of Never, Sigismund I of Hungary and Mircea I of Wallachia, Ottoman empire continued to expand under the leadership of sultan Yildirim Bayezid I. To the east new empire under amir Timur (Tamerlane) was on the rise and as the borders of two empires touched, the war was inevitable. The battle of Ankara of 1402 was one of the biggest fought between the Muslim empires. At the same time, results of this massive battle impacted Ottoman, Timurid, Byzantine empires and changed the course of the history of Europe, Asia, Middle East and Balkans.

I would say that the first Twitter war happened between Spartans and Philip, father of Alexander. When he came to Sparta he said "Open your gates and surrender. For if I win, if I invade your city, you will suffer, you will be dead, your women will be humiliated, your children will be enslaved." But Spartans answered shortly with a single word: "If". P. S. Sorry for my English and possible inaccuracies, I wrote what I remembered.

Those people changed their side against The Ottoman. 2 nd thing channel missed: At the beginning of the war, Bayezid was not there and Timur was waiting for him by playing chest (imagine how strong Timur is). This means Ottoman army was already dying of thirst so when the Bayezid arrived to battlefield, Timur just captured him. Timurs army overwhelmingly won. By the way, I am a Turkish.

Timur have seen Bayazid as himself.... Timur took Castle of Smirna in couple of months.... While Bayazid was fighting 12 years with Ionit knights...

The biggest impact of Timur was not this battle and its consquences, it was taking down of Golden Horde. Granted, Ottomans got into civil war, but their incredible administration and law system prevented any breakup. @@mjhmab But Temur did not want the Muslims of his empire to accuse him of destroying the Islamic power that waged war on the "infidels", and planned a brilliant distracting maneuver. This maneuver was the capture of Smyrna, the possession of the Knights of Rhodes, the European enclave in Anatolia, which withstood the siege of Murad, then Bayazed himself, due to its advantageous geographical position. This fortress, protected by high thick walls, stood on the shore, adjacent to the sea, and a deep moat was dug in front of it and a powerful wall was built. She had an inner harbor so that she could receive help by sea. On December 2, 1402, Temur appeared before Smyrna and invited the knights to surrender, promising to save their lives if they converted to Islam. After a categorical refusal, he concentrated all his troops there. The capture of Smyrna proves how skillful Temur was in the siege and storm of fortresses: the Ottomans stomped around Smyrna for ten years, and he achieved success in a few days. His sappers began with the construction of a bridge over the moat, then destroyed the outer wall and went to the fortifications. They destroyed them at the base, using peaks, leverage, fire, burning oil, cold water and even vinegar. To protect themselves from the shells of the besieged, they came up with mobile fences that were constantly saturated with vinegar, which made them fireproof. But the most remarkable thing in this siege is the construction of a huge wooden flooring in the sea, which turned into a "land" the part of the city facing the sea, so that no ship could enter or leave the harbor. From this flooring the soldiers began to make holes in the walls with unprecedented frenzy. The best archers of the Great Emir fired at the besieged, who tried to prevent the destruction of the walls. Temur gave the order to set fire to the huge logs supporting the walls. When they collapsed, a massive assault began. The population and the garrison were destroyed, after which the victors demolished the fortifications and set fire to the city. The ships that came to the aid of Smyrna were forced to retreat under a hail of shells fired from catapults. Despite this action against Christians, the Great Conqueror received gratitude and offers of alliance from many European monarchs. After messages from the king of Spain, he received similar letters from Charles V, the French king; Henry IV, king of England; and Manuel, emperor of Byzantium. Emperor Trebizond became his vassal, just like his longtime rival, the Egyptian sultan, who sent his envoy with a letter, which promised to mint coins and render prayers in honor of the victor in all cities of Syria and Egypt. This brilliant victory, admittedly, made the stay of the Great Emir at the gates to Europe unnecessary. He believed that fate would call him further east to this “wicked” China Min, where crowds of pagans were waiting for “fire and sword” to convert to true faith.

Terrific video, but please note that in Timur's memoirs he gave short thrift to his battle with Bayazid, but talked extensively about the challenge Toktamish presented in the 2 battles vs the Golden Horde. I would like to note that in my opinion Timur's campaign vs the Golden Horde up in the Samara region at the battle on the Kondurcha river was one of the greatest military campaign by anyone anywhere ever. To chase down arguably the best cavalry in the world in the heart of their domain, 1,500 miles from your base of operations where the enemy has not only a decisive manpower advantage, but the benefit of more well rested horses, supplies and knowledge of the local terrain, and win the battle, even if just barely, says it all about Timur and his military!!

If the battle goes well and you win. You can pay your mercs with spoils of war. Other wise don't count on them. Cause some merc have no honor among others. Some do as long you pay them. And then their are the ones who will bolt when things get ugly. So that's why you send them in first.

There is a story (though it might be apocryphal) about Timur's tomb. In June 1941, the Soviets excavated Timur's tomb in Samarqand where they found an inscription underneath his coffin: "Whosever disturbs this tomb will unleash an invader more terrible than I". A few days later, the Germans launched Operation Barbarossa. In 1942, the Soviets reburied Timur with full Islamic rites, shortly before the success of Operation Uranus in Stalingrad.

If you actually studies history, you’d realize people were only “loyal” until it was no longer beneficial for them. The crusades were never about “fighting for god”, and were instead just a way for the powerful to control the uneducated masses and get them killed in wars that only served as power grabs for the rulers. The same way Muslim armies called on the people to defend against “aggression wars by the infield”. Why don’t you just shut the fuck up and let the same people enjoy learning.

On an account he is believed to say, addressing Bayezit I "the Lightning" : "I didn't sleep at nights. I hunted to feed my men, and in the morning we rode. We went on like this for years. I built this empire with my hands, with my blood and sweat. It wasn't handed over to me by my father like you."

@@lastflightofosiris while Bayazid, deciding his affairs in the Balkans, promoting the Islamization and omanization of the population of the Balkans, his son Suleiman “clashed” with the Turkmen ruler Kara Yusuf, defeated him and captured him. Since Kara Yusuf was a subject of Tamerlane, Bayazid made himself a very formidable enemy. Not to say that Tamerlane did not glance at the lands of the Ottomans, but his gaze extended further to Syria, and to the Holy Land. To resolve the situation, Tamerlan writes Bayazid a letter. I will give in a somewhat abbreviated form. “What is the reason for your recklessness and arrogance? You fought several battles in the forests of Anatolia. Poor trophies. You won several victories over Christians in Europe, such a sword was blessed by the apostle of God, and your adherence to the command of the Koran in the war against the infidels is the only consideration that keeps us from destroying your country, the borders and strongholds of the Muslim world ... Show wisdom in time, think and repent and prevent the thunderbolt of our retribution, which still hangs over your head. You are no more than an ant, why are you teasing elephants? Alas, they will trample you under their feet. ”

Of course Serbia, Bulgaria, Moldavia and Wallachia had a core of mixed Romanians and Slavs, but he is more related with Hungary (mainly Transylvania) and Moldavia than with Serbia. Vlach means romance language speaker. The Greeks started to use the term for shepherds because most of the shepherds in Balkans were romance speakers. This was done to make difference between Greeks (Romanoi) and Romanians because both were referring to themselves as Romans.

Timur defenitely has more Turkic features than Mongolian, you can obviously see that on his facial reconstruction the soviets did. The idea or misinformation of Timur being of a Turkified Mongol tribe is according to a puny historian that doesn't understand why Timur claimed to be of Mongol decent while it's obvious for many prestigious historians. He tried to link himself with Genghid and married a Mongolian princess and called himself'the groom'. He did talk Turkic, was Turkic, had Turkic culture but adhered the Mongol identity over the Turkic one.

Eh, in EUIV when you get big it is hard to lose but the Ottomans somehow managed. So not a great comparison.

Even if his father was executed by Bayazid, Stefan honored his duty. God, I wish my people was still honorable like then. But we went to shit.

Stefan's father died during the battle. He was not executed by Bayezid. But yeah, I agree with the second part of your comment.

At that time Ottomans were preferable to Catholic west by any Orthodox because it was a multicultural state which practiced freedom of religion. For example, opening of "bars and pubs" were prohibited for muslims but it was allowed for Christians. That's why Ottoman alcoholic beverage culture is mostly Greek and Armenian, for example.

@@lastflightofosiris I don't know what your comment has to to with mine. Either way, you don't put medieval Catholics and freedom of religion in same sentence.

@@belisarius707 i went off the topic a bit. Short version, idk about specific history, but many Eastern European lords were ok being a vassal of Ottomans and execution was everyday life. He must've held his people above his personal vendetta. Again idk his story.

@@AngryHistorian87 His head was cut-off which suggests execution. The inscription on the column that Stefan made in 1405 says that Murad and Jakub were killed first and that Lazar was captured after all of that. "Oh wonders of Divine fate captured was the brave sufferer by unlawful hands of agarens and his end he received with grace and became martyr of Christ great knez Lazar He was cut by non other, oh beloved but by the of son of Amurad. All that was said ended in summer of 6897, indict 12 month 15, day tuesday hour was six or sevent i dont know, God knows. "

The battle was a major victory for Timur, and it led to a period of crisis for the Ottoman Empire (the Ottoman Interregnum). However, the Timurid Empire went into terminal decline following Timur's death just three years after the battle, while the Ottoman Empire made a full recovery, and continued to increase in power for another two to three centuries.
