The "Battle Hymn of the Republic", also known as "Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory" outside of the United States, is a popular American patriotic song by the abolitionist writer Julia Ward Howe.
Howe wrote her lyrics to the music of the song "John Brown's Body" in November 1861 and first published them in The Atlantic Monthly in February 1862. The song links the judgment of the wicked at the end of the age (through allusions to biblical passages such as Isaiah 63 and Revelation 19) with the American Civil War.

@Tommyknox777 Saying live to make men free does have a slightly more biblical meaning. Since there are versions about Jesus's Death means that we don't have to die and can be "living sacrifices" Living each day with righteous purpose.
Ok but "I have read a fiery gospel writ in burnished rows of steel; As ye deal with my contemnors, so with you my grace shall deal; Let the hero born of woman crush the serpent with His heel" is such a fire line
I am an American and I am proud . But this song makes me feel 100x prouder.

Texas: I wish I was independent again. America: if only Texas, if only. America: *whispers* hey Phil, dont tell Texas there that you used to be mine and I gave you independence. Philippines: um, sure?

It ain't about feeling American it's about feeling human. In war we dehumanize each other less than trash to cope with the horror of war but we're just human. The military/political machine will chew and consume till there's nothing left. They'll have what they want but taken what everyone actually needs.

This is definitely not an anti-war, anti-politics songs. This is a song in the support of the American Civil War (pro-war) from an abolitionist perspective (political). The south faces judgement for their sin (slavery) like sinners do at the end times in Christianity.
