Apparently when you over-dub foreign languages with English, you crank up the foreign originals as loud as possible and make the English translation almost inaudible. The person who mixed the sound for this clip was a rare genius.

Complacency is one of the reasons over-dubbing is used many times. In England. Not many take the effort to learn German (or French), because you expect others to speak English. No hard feelings, ha ha.

THE VALUE OF JUSTICE - If the Dutch referee Corver had red-carded Schumacher, granted a penalty kick to France, and Platini scored again, the game would have ended 2-1 after 90 minutes. The aggression by Schumacher would still be remembered, but with much less anger and condemnation. Because of the inaction of the referee, the sense of injustice and frustration has prevailed and still enrages both, French and neutral fans who love the game. I am not justifying Schumacher. Just pondering how much the value of justice can heal - or otherwise.

Yes, but the poetic justice is that the French team would later become just as hideously charmless as the Germans. The bad guys always win is all I've learned from watching football. The only time I have ever thought that the best team won a World Cup was in 2002. And that was rigged anyway and had the Rivaldo flop and things, so I wasn't even able to enjoy that. The World Cup just sucks, period.

A dispassionate review would point out that a red card would have been harsh. Both players had a right to play the ball, and the goalie was clearly in a 'protect self' position when he clattered into Battiston. With that said, the goalie should have been shown a second yellow for his taunting after the fact. The refereeing in this match was pretty poor...

Amazing how Schumacher got away with the foul like this one. "In the process Schumacher's hip hit the Frenchman's face. Battiston, clattered, fell to the ground unconscious, with damaged vertebrae and teeth knocked out, later slipping into a coma. Emergency medics had to administer oxygen on the pitch. Michel Platini later said that he thought that Battiston was dead, because "he had no pulse and looked pale".

Schumacher took the coward's way out and checked him leading with his elbow and hip towards the head instead of putting his own body on the line and diving at Battiston's feet. He knew exactly what he was doing. It was a penalty, a red card, probably a 3 month suspension and the Spanish Police should have investigated it for assault. Terrible foul and arguably the worst refereeing decision in the history of Football.

Schumacher did take the self preservation route...as Battiston should have done. It's not a penalty, as it's not actually a foul. Both players went full speed into each other. Both players have a right to challenge the ball, and goalkeepers are legally allowed to protect themselves when doing so. For me, Schumacher should have been sent off with a second yellow for his taunting later...but the initial call on the pitch was correct.

Klaus fisher, Karl Heinz Rummenigge.....legendary players whom came through in brilliant fashion. I vaguely remember this incident though. I don't think I ever realized how serious his injury was. I saw it like you, and I can´t understand your memory loss. France was the best team of Spain 82. Don't you remember Platini, Tigana, Giresse, Trésor, Rocheteau, only the germans. Battiston went out KO, the match was stopped for ten or fifteen minutes, later Platini said that he thought for a moment that "son ami était mort". Schumacher with his knee and hip crashed on Battiston head on opposite runs, it means 40 mph, his teeth are nobody knows where, he never reacted that day. More than HD you have to change your glasses. The match continued. After this intent of murder. Battiston has kicked the ball over Schumacher's head, KRASHH !!, the ball rolls and went out two inches from the vertical. One man on the grass half dead. The referee marks ball from the goal line for Germany, and so goes on the match. Not a red, yellow or observation for Toni. A real mess for the referee. Show must go on.

Here's what Coerver, the ref, said in 2010. I remember thinking at the time that maybe he had been watching the ball. “It was the best semi-final ever played during any final tournament on any continent. I never saw the incident, as everyone’s eyes in the stadium followed the ball. The moment I saw Battiston prone on the pitch, I went over to my assistant Robert Valentine from Scotland, who told me it was not intentional. Even Dutch television commentator Evert ten Napel admitted that he too followed the ball’s course, which went just wide. Throughout the rest of the match the players never gave me grief for the decision either. Yes, in retrospect, I should have sent Schumacher off, of course, for using excessive force.”

WHY is this one of the greatest World Cup games ever? 6 reasons: QUALITY - CRESCENDO - ROLLERCOASTER - CONTRAST - DRAMA - TRAGEDY - QUALITY: Six goals. Great saves by GKs. Most of the game played in the final third of each team due to rapid counter-offensives. Great passing sequences (mostly France). Dribbling (Littbarski, Tigana, Amoros, Briegel). - CRESCENDO: Very good 90 minutes with two goals, even better 30 minutes of extra time with 4 great goals. - ROLLERCOASTER: Germany scored first. France tied, went ahead. Germany tied again during extra-time. - DRAMA: Penalty shootout with a rollercoaster of its own, as Germany came back once more, after Stielike had missed. - TRAGEDY: Had Schumacher fouled Battiston outside of the Seville stadium, he would have been arrested and charged for assault crime. Worst, Dutch referee inaction (no red card for Schumacher, no free kick for France). - CONTRAST: The artistic and creative France vs the physical and disciplined Germany, with a painful historic past (Napoleon’s occupation of Germany, Nazi occupation of France).

Being born quite some years after 1982, I had not really seen any footage of this match before, only knew Germany went through to the final. I absolutely agree that Schumacher deserved to be sent off for the foul, but I don't think it was in any way a malicious attempt to injure Battiston. He even said it himself in this documentary, he was concerned about him but couldn't do anything at the time. When he was finally able to apologise to Battiston, the Frenchman forgave him, and everyone else should do the same. The fact that 40 years (!) on some people are still salty about one foul says more about them than Toni Schumacher.

Of course it's hard to prove the intention but we can clearly see if the tackle is late or not meant to get the ball at all. Thanks to youtube it's all clear now.

Is it just me or do the French goalkeeper (is it Bats?) and Schumacher look insanely alike😂 Also, who else sees the similarities between Schumacher's assault and Neuer's collision with Higuain, even with the caveat that Neuer did get the ball?

    Le scandale, ce n'est pas que Schumacher ait commis cette agression sur Battiston. On apprend ici qu'ils se sont revus et réconciliés et c'est très bien. Le scandale, c'est que cette action méritait l'expulsion immédiate du gardien allemand, ce qui aurait évidemment changé l'issue du match, et peut-être celle du tournoi;

It was a foul for body checking a player in possession so a yellow or red card, but in the penalty area so a penalty, and blatantly fouling an attacker as last defender in front of goal another red, and reckless play so another red - summary instead of 2 or 3 reds he gets a goal kick.

What?? France was fantastic in the 1980s! Platini, Trésor, Girese! Euro 1984, and World Cup semifinals in 1982 and 1986. And let's not forget the fantastic squad in 1958, with Just Fontaine scoring 13 goals in the tournament, a record. It's a very biased view that you hold, France *was* really good several times before Zidane; maybe not as good, but incredible nonetheless

I think Schumacher should have been sent out and as usual the referee was too scared to book a German player. Germany plays one the dirtiest soccer but never get a red card. How should people trust FIFA seing that? It's like trusting the guy holding a gun at your forehead saying "trust me, I won't use it". Mr. House

FIFATV This was a very good French team, one of my all time favorites, but I suppose the '86 team was seen as better by most. I strongly believe that both France and Brasil were deliberately cheated out of appearing in the '82 final. No penalty for Scum-aker's dangerous play, and no penalty for Gentile pulling down Zico, ripping his shirt in the penalty area.

A goal-keeper has to make a decision. Otherwise, he is too late. And sometimes, he is too late. Completely normal. France was the better team and should have played the final against Brazil. PS Germany refused to nominate Bernd Schuster, who was the best german midfielder between 1980 and 1990.
