Battery Drain Exposed: The Truth About Sentry Mode On Your Model 3

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Ever wonder how much battery drain you can expect when leaving Sentry Mode enabled on your Model 3? While this may not be an issue if you leave your Tesla parked during the day, it very well could become a concern if it's parked for an extended period of time.
I conducted a test to see just how much sentry mode was draining the battery when we left our Model 3 unattended. To kick it up a notch, I also had cabin overheat protection enabled. The results really surprised me. Phantom drain is really a thing when your Tesla is parked for for a longer period of time.

Should note that sentry mode will be disabled automatically once your battery hits 20% so the battery will never got to zero from sentry mode being on. When sentry mode is on, it keeps the car awake, when the car is awake it is always recording and keeping the last 1 hour of footage as the recent recording. Sentry mode events just means it will retain the last 10 minutes recorded footage when triggered and should not use up any additional battery that is already used up from being awake.

Cabin over heat protection is also disabled at 20% charge - the car goes into the equivalent of extreme battery saver mode for a mobile phone, basically a deep sleep and the battery loss slows to 1% every 3-4 days.

I just got a used M3 long range. I’ve been seeing about 2-3% loss from sentry mode. Once I can fit it in the garage, I’ll disable sentry at home.

Watched this from New Zealand and thanks so much for the advice. I returned from a 30 day round the world trip and lost 80% of my battery at the airport. Luckily we dont have extreme weather in NZ, but might just Uber it to the airport next time Im planning a lengthy vacation

Running sentry mode uses about 250w of energy constantly, so thats 1% of battery every 3-4 hrs. Cabin overheat is very hard to predict energy use because it depends how often it kicks in and if it uses AC. However it is only active for 24hrs after the car is last used. Based on how much energy gets used to cool down a hot car for the first few minutes after getting in you could be looking at 1% of battery every time it activates the AC, which could be multiple times a day. Leaving the car with sentry and overheat protection off loses negligible energy. Any difference in battery % is usually due to the battery cooling down and changing the % estimate, which means time of day can affect the number in the app. Parked our car for 2 weeks with sentry off, saw about 2% loss. But ark the car for 30 minutes after supercharging and sometimes see 4% loss as the battery cools down, you get it back once the battery warms up again on a long drive.

Whew! I just got a Model 3 last week and have been using both Sentry Mode and Cabin heat protection and thought something might have been wrong with my battery because I was losing at least 10% per day in North Carolina.

Hi folks, it's not surprising. Elsewhere there's a suggestion that the computer uses around 200 watts. That's a kilo watt hour every five hours, or almost 5 kilo watt hours per day. The computer is running if Sentry Mode is enabled or if Cabin Heat protection is on, or both. With Cabin Heat there is an additional load on the battery due to the heat pump and cabin fan running to cool the car. The computer alone is going to consume about 1% of the battery per day - down to 20% when it appears it will put to sleep to protect the remaining charge. The Cabin overheat consumption is much more tricky to predict as it depends on outside temperature and solar gain, the point is though that it is added to the charge consumed by the computer. I'd have thought it would be at least another 1%. There's no such thing as a free lunch, use the facilities provided and there will be a cost. If at home, keep the car plugged in if these facilities are needed for an extended period. If parked elsewhere consider carefully if they are needed.

It was pretty much the same. My M3 parked back in MI had overheat protection enabled, but it wasn’t in play since the temp was never hot enough.

I regret buying a Tesla. It definitely does not give you the milage per charge. And 10% battery consumption for just sitting in a driveway and recording is ridiculous.

Daily electricity consumption of a Tesla in the Sentry mode equals to montly electricity consumption of a small flat 🤯 going green 🤡
