This scene was filmed in the historic Blackstone Hotel's ballroom. Its one of the most amazing rooms in the whole hotel. I was there for a wedding. Amazing place. I highly recommend it for a vacation. Just don't get clubbed to death in the ballroom that's all.

Iconic scene. What's even more brutal is that this is based on a true historical event, with 3 mobsters being beat to death with baseball bats. The context and story of the deaths are still unknown, but it is true that it was Capone related.

It’s probably based on the theory/story about John Scalise and two other guys “Years later, a more popular story emerged that Al Capone had discovered that Scalise, Anselmi, and Giunta were conspiring with rival mobster Joe Aiello to betray him. Capone bodyguard Frankie Rio was credited with uncovering the plan, which his boss initially refused to believe. During a charade concocted for their benefit, Capone staged an argument with Rio in front of Scalise and Anselmi and then slapped his bodyguard, who ran from the room. Both killers tracked Frankie Rio down and offered to bring him in on their plans with Giunta and Aiello. After confirmation of the treachery, an elaborate ruse was developed to get rid of the plotters. At the climax of a dinner thrown in their honor, Capone produced a baseball bat and beat the three men nearly to death, before two or three gunmen stepped in to finish the job.” I mean these guys were known associates of Capone so the betrayal story is probably true.

Interesting to note that the one who gets his head bashed in, is the only one (besides Nitti) who isn’t wearing the exact same tuxedo. He is wearing a stylish and distinctly different waist coat to the others because he is not “PART OF A TEAM”

Close to 4 decades later it’s still a great scene and as chilling as when I first saw it when I was 14.

There was nothing he could do, the bat was a made guy and the back of his head wasn't.

He and one of his senior lieutenants/captains helped. That man was Tony Accordo and got the nickname "Joe Batters" after beating one of the two without breaking a sweat. He eventualy took half control over Capones gang and ran it behind the scenes as the Under Boss and with Paul Ricca as the Godfather. The two used front bosses for decades, but they were the real power. After Ricca died of natural causes in 1972, Accordo became the official boss until his death in 1992.

This was based on a real (and bloodier) event. It involved the murders of three men- John Scalise, Albert Anselmi and Joseph Giunta. Their plan was to assassinate Capone and seize his crime empire. Unfortunately for them, Capone found out via a loyal intermediary. He threw a gala dinner in their honor in Hammond, IN. After they were engorged with food and sated with wine, Capone henchmen jumped them on a prearranged signal and tied them to their chairs. Screaming furiously, Capone produced the bat and beat the three almost to death; they were each finished off with a gunshot to the head. Their bodies were left on a deserted stretch of road outside of town.

Still, it's a great speech about teamwork

Appreciate for a moment the genius of Brian DePalma and the blocking and filming of that scene

In honor of Billy Drago, whose passing was just announced, I invite all of you to notice and enjoy Nitti's "reaction" to the horror unfolding. Such a great touch for those paying attention. He was so good in bad guy roles, and by all accounts, a gentleman and supportive peer off-camera.

​@@PhilAndersonOutside How do people gauge a Capone performance? Is there a bunch of video's online that the real Capone can be seen interacting and going about his daily life or something?

The scene was based on a myth about Capone in which he found out that three of his men were planning on killing him. Capone then had each of them beaten with bats and then executed, though Capone himself didn't take part in the beatings.

Pidgeon Scythe that was Joe Pesci in goodfellas, not even the same actor or movie.

Love how Frank Nitti just watches with no real emotion, while all the rest are turning their heads with shock, and disbelief! Robert Deniro portrayed Al Capone the best!

Jeremy 065 He’s the same guy in every movie. He has the same mannerisms, same accent same everything....and it’s good but he’s overrated. In the movie Casino it’s a perfect example. Pesci spoke with a midwestern or especially a Chicago accent, Deniro never even tried just the same guy.

Jeremy 065 He’s the same guy with the same expressions and mannerisms. Daniel Day Lewis is a legend not Deniro, Deniro is a good movie star but not a great actor. And yes Pesci absolutely changed his accent in Casino, he changed his native New York accent to a Chicago accent anyone from the States or especially one of those cities and clearly hear it.

What a motivation for a sales team! This is a zero-failure, sure-shot motivation.

To this day whenever someone says something about teamwork, I act like the first guy at the table saying “teamwork… teamwork…”. Funny that after 30 years, that’s the one part of the movie that stuck with me the most LOL.

Not as bad as Joe Pesci's ending in Casino

This is my favourite film by Brian de palma he got a fantastic cast in sean connery deserves the Oscar for his performance he was brilliant as Jimmy malone and Robert de niro was brilliant as Al capone and a great soundtrack as well 👍👍👍👍🎼🎼🎼

I love the tone of the guy saying "Jesus Christ..." It's like "yeah, I get you had to make an example, but did you have to get blood on my slice of cake?"

Imagine if he got the wrong guy, they all look the same from the back.

Oof.

I still remember watching this on rental with my Dad. Even my 9 year old self was tense the way Al moves menacingly behind everyone with them shuddering. When Al hits a grand slam using the head of a henchman my Dad went "Gosh, Al!"

I knew someone was getting hit with that bat lmfao 🤣

This scene is so powerful!...the lines written are so poetic and de Niro is unmatched in his delivery!...a dramatic demonstration of poetic gore and wisdom.

This scene is no joke.

Great motivational speech, de Niro 👏 once again I applaud his performance , love that Brooklyn accent and the darkness of his portrayal of al capone. This be a great speech without the bat beating business

This is one of DeNiros most memorable roles! Not much screen time. But when he did, boy did it fit him perfectly.

Always loved the overhead shot at the end. Everyone is completely motionless except Nitti, who is just casually folding a napkin like nothing has happened. Billy Drago was absolutely terrifying in this film.

Notice how Nitti (played by Billy Drago) is unfazed by the goon getting his head bashed in.

I like how Nitty is the only one who isn't horrified. He was ready for that shit. Probably thinking, "he died like a pig".

Thanos of Titan Also notice how the lieutenant who later cracks under Malone's fake-gunshot-in-the-mouth gambit up at the Canadian border is one of the most horrified at Capone's attack. Foreshadowing ... can't stand the sight of blood.

Great acting by Deniro. You can feel/see his utter contempt for all the dropkicks working for him

Love the look he gives to everyone right after. It's like he's saying "anyone else wanna try messing with me"?.

The exasperated eye roll at 1:18 is such classic De Niro.

Thats the EXACT motivational speech and technique my little league baseball coach used to use. Our team budget to get the blood out of tablecloths was HUGE!

Curiously, I heard the real Al Capone did once murder a guy with a baseball bat so this scene isn't entirely dramatised for effect!
