PART 2 OF 3
PART 1:
• BATMAN V SUPERMAN: REA...
JUSTICE LEAGUE REVIEW:
www.geek.com/movies/moviebob-...
Yeah, it's bad. You already knew that. But how did something get THIS bad?
How does a project with so much at stake go so wrong in such a profound, all-encompassing way? At moment when the comic-book superhero genre is at its zenith, BATMAN V SUPERMAN was seemingly holding a winning hand: A celebrated, stylish director. A powerhouse cast. 80+ years worth of cherished American pop-mythology to draw from. Some of the most popular characters of all time. Dumptrucks full of Warner Bros' money to spend. And on top of all that, a moviegoing public hungry enough for an alternative to the Marvel Cinematic Universe formula for a pitch like "depressing, ultra-violent, pitch-dark 9/11-themed SUPERMAN movie" to sound (almost) like a good idea.
And yet, the end result was among the great cinematic calamities of the last decade; receiving scathing reviews, a near record-setting box-office dropoff, enraged notices from many fans and sarcastic "thank you's" from people named Martha. Even today, the shockwave from the film's negative reception are being felt as the studio continues to reshuffle the slate of films it was meant to inspire, JUSTICE LEAGUE continues to be transformed in post-production and the word "reboot" begins to fill the air. While not unprofitable or without its own unironic fans, the film seems destined to go down as one of the most infamous releases in the history of the genre.
In PART 2, we dive deep into the story-structure, themes and individual sequences that add up to one of the most bafflingly ill-conceived features of all time; including in-depth focus on the infamous "Knightmare" and "Martha Moment" scenes!
"Black Vortex", "Disco Lounge", "Marty Gots a Plan", "Oppressive Gloom", "The Curtain Rises", "Ultralounge", "Wizardtorium," "Inspire"

Not only did Wonder Woman not act on those real life events listed, she was unmoved by umpteen years of Batman, Joker, Croc etc. But also a whole bunch of aliens landing and trying to terraform the Planet!

Mark Stirton. To be fair, that is an inherent issue with the superhero combined universes within comics as well. Why the heroes dont team up to solve their local problems in detail ultimately making a huge difference in overall crime and catastrophe would be a mystery in the real world. Why shouldnt wonderwoman and superman lend their tallents to Bruce and clean up all of Gotham over a long weekend so they can then count on his considerable resources to assist them in their areas of interest? Theres absolutely no reason for Batman to take on the Jokers latest scheme alone.

To be fair, while that issue does go uncommented on a lot of times, just as often they will give an explanation or extenuating circumstances make one unnecessary. Just recently I was reading Thor's "god butcher" arc. Where Iron Man makes a brief cameo helping Thor find a specific location in Russia. He offers to help Thor going forward but Thor turns him down saying it's no business for mortals. It's not just empty words, there are VERY good reasons Thor's taking this one solo but that would be spoiling. Even in the MCU, at least for the Avengers there's usually a reason for it. In Winter Soldier Cap is on the run and any attempts to contact anybody would get traced by SHIELD. In Iron Man 3 Tony is sans armor for most of the film so likewise can't just fly to D.C. to get Cap. In Thor: the Dark World, the threat of the Aether is contained within Jane and by the time Malekith makes his move, he's bouncing around to multiple worlds. You can call them handwaves but they are present.

There is also a joke in Ant-Man about it where Jason Lang, after being told about the villain's plan, says, "okay, I think that we should call the Avengers." Its basically handwaved by saying that there's some things that a superhero team can't do and that they may be preoccupied elsewhere.

I think he means serialized storytelling in general, though. That includes a series since it means watching more than one film to get a complete story. It’s a complaint that’s been around even before the cinematic universe boom. “Everything’s a sequel now”. (At least that’s what I think he meant)

@@WyattoonsComics But at least HP was honest with it. There was a set number of consequent books, and an (almost) set number of correspondent movies, you knew from the start what you were getting into, there were no tie-ins, no separate movies or TV shows you "feel like you need to watch". Sure, you needed to actually read the books to understand what the fuck was going on, but that's just because the movies sucked, not because of the serialized format.

I literally just made a comment about that and went to check if anyone agreed. They had a really great template and instead ignored everything that worked in the show in favor of this. They didn't even use a similar lineup, in the marketing for JL they only used 2 of the 7 heroes from the show, and usually just with their logos. It's surprising that they at least didn't market it with callbacks to the show

They're clearly ashamed of their characters' childish origins so much they had to reimagine them as cynics, aloof jerks or psychopaths, I bet they see their animated universe as some juvenile distraction from their true calling of making "mature" superhero movies, when "mature superhero movie" is an oxymoron.

It weirdly reminds me of the Silent Hill series. Konami (the company that published the games) never seemed to have much respect for the games in spite of their success. The team that made the best-loved early games, Team Silent, was really a team of outcast developers the higher ups didn't know what to do with. Later, after breaking up the Team, Konami farmed out the property to different studios, merely wanting to cash in on the name recognition. Naturally, these games had little love behind them and weren't received as well. As seemingly the last nail in the coffin, when Hideo Kojima, the last big creative head at Konami, wanted to team up with Guillermo del Toro to make a new Silent Hill with a hugely popular teaser, Konami had a falling out with him and shit-canned the whole project. It's just a reminder that most executives with substantial control haven't a clue about the affection people have for their products, much less a fundamental understanding of them. They're just businessmen.

I've always said Marvel celebrates their characters and WB is ashamed of theirs. Growing up, the only character as corny as Superman was Captain America. Snyder de-saturated Superman because at heart he thinks he's a shitty character. The MCU is a giant love letter to Captain America. And he is exactly as he was in the comics, bright red, white and blue.

Joel Henry Absolutely. They find the heart of their pantheon's morals and beliefs embarrassing. And I legitimately believe that the only way to save Batman now is with Robin, but they're too cowardly and ashamed to do it. The kicker is, these "light" characters have way more actual dark pathos than their angsty counterparts. Superman: Birthright or Robin: Year One prove that.

"I've always said Marvel celebrates their characters and WB is ashamed of theirs." That's a bit of an oversimplification. You could see Thor/Ragnarok as a celebration of Thor, but you could also see it as Marvel understanding that he just doesn't work as a serious fantasy character today. First they sci-fied him, then they went straight comedy. Marvel also doesn't have any Hulk solo films planned anymore, because they understand that Hulk solo films don't work. If one were so inclined, one could read both these moves as "shame" on Marvel's part. But I think it's just savvy understanding of 1) their heroes, 2) film vs comics, and 3) 2017 culture. I don't think The Dark Knight films for example are any more ashamed of Batman than Marvel is of Thor/Hulk, they just both understand those 3 key points. Most DC directors/producers don't.

pureWasted Actually, this is stranger: Marvel HAS TO celebrate them, DC has more freedom with theirs. The MCU limits how the characters evolve, they need to be closer to the comics to get fans into the most obscure of their characters. That's why they made a Hulk movie despite they had no rights of distribution, why Thor was the last hero on getting a movie and why Hawkeye and Black Widow got to not have movie on until later. DC doesn't have that problem... and that's the problem.

The branding already represents the fall into madness and could call into question how exactly is he that much better than criminals when he's treating them like animals. He could lean on the fact that he doesn't kill but all the other shit blurs the line. THEN when he realizes the true threat that Superman could potentially pose if he went rogue Batman decides that he must break that rule for the good of the earth in his mind, which would further solidify his fall from grace as that would be the doorway to him crossing that line and never coming back...

NONE of those have anything to do with the SPIRIT of the comics. All of those things you mentioned are the SURFACE details, & have NOTHING to do with WHY the comics stories work. The Marvel movies change things when needed, but they don't do so arbritrarily. Captain America in the movies IS Captain America, regardless of what he wears. MCU Spider-Man IS Spider-Man in feel, attitude & personality, regardless of where he got his suit. The core of what makes the MCU work is that the people who make the movies, both in front of & behind the camera, respect & appreciate the source material they are working from. They understand that the stories have worked for decades, & try to stay true to the spirit of those stories. That doesn't mean that they will never change anything. Avengers is not a 100% faithful, 1 to 1 translation of comics to screen. They changed some things to work better in the movies. But, Avengers is still one of the most accurate comic book movies ever made, because it captures the SPIRIT of the comics it was based off of perfectly.

@@Braktooth he totally did blame the gun. God it triggers me so bad when people defend Tony (morally) that I'm seriously replying to this a year late, lol. How can people support punishing Bucky...when it literally wasn't even him tho? Dude has had it the roughest of all the main MCU cast, I swear. I don't think Tony was in the moral right. To their absolute credit, however, I do feel that the Russo brothers recognized that it was a lot and took the task of convincing the audience that Tony would actually try to kill Bucky (and Steve in the process) very seriously. They made sure it took the least amount of thought and decision on Tony's part and built it up as a crime of passion. I mean, it literally was in a split second. I think if Tony had found out separately and had to take time and effort to find and pursue his evil revenge it would be a LOT harder to swallow. Throughout the entire film, the Russo's also built up Tony's emotional instability. And then they had him not only learn the truth, but visually watch the murder of his parents. Immediately followed by the second punch that Steve had known all along and betrayed him. They also did not enter this situation as the best of friends nor on solid ground. I see the entire movie one long dominos line up the Russo's painstakingly set up one by one. While they made sure Tony switched sides when he learned the truth to keep him sympathetic, that doesn't negate the fact that the whole movie his view of Bucky is an evil murdering psychopath. They made sure to show Tony experiencing Bucky basically killing him as well...as Bucky tried to shoot him in the fucking face (well, chest) lol and we are shown Tony's reaction to that, front and center. The knowledge that he could have been killed in that moment looks like it seriously shocks him and in a ridiculously fast action scene, the camera comes to a halt and freezes on that image. They also made sure that Tony never learned the full backstory of Bucky. The details of him being brainwashed/hijacked/brain in a blender. So when it came time for it to be convenient to see Bucky as just an evil dude, Tony had lots of material to fall back on. And again, he had gone through a lot. They showed the strain on his mental and emotional health and his physical health. This pushed him over the edge and I believe the Russo brothers really respected that that is something you have to earn. It's not enough to just throw in a dead mom discovery and "oh now that's the justification for everything." it's not a free pass like other writers will use, like a cheap trick, to get them through the plot. However...then when other people treat it like a free pass...I get a little triggered by all the victim blaming lol. I just want to yell "have any of you even SEEN The Winter Soldier??!" how can you come out of that movie after witnessing how exactly they engineered (and tortured) Bucky to turn him into a weapon and not be on Cap's side? He got taken prisoner and tortured for 70 years, finally escaped only to become a prisoner again for shit he did out of his control. Totally sucks. His existence is a nightmare, in real life I would be very concerned he would kill himself as I probably would. He has a free suicide pass lol if at any time he killed himself I wouldn't question it. There is no logical benefit to punishing him when the person you are punishing would never do the things you are punishing them for. [only potential imprisonment would be for everyone's safety as Bucky is happy to do for Christ's sake]. Then all these assholes think Bucky deserves all of it, argue Cap is being unreasonable, and defend Tony's actions... which are only defensible as a crime of passion. I cannot conceive that any of these defenders actually watched all three Captain America movies and actually, idk, paid attention? At all?? I think it's just Robert Downey Jr. being hot/cool lol. OK I'm done there's my love letter to the Russo brothers and the Captain America trilogy lol. I may have seen these movies a feewww too many times. It does bother me that Tony goes after him but that's part of the movie for me it's just a fact Tony is a total dick by the end lol hashtag cap team fo life. I don't feel Tony is portrayed as in the right so it doesn't bother me. I don't know how the Russo brothers even could have (portrayed Tony as in the moral right) after they made The Winter Soldier! If I was a huge Iron Man fan I would be veeeery uncomfortable. Damn it I edited my comment just to rant more.

NAILED IT. I say this in every dumb online discussion that I allow myself to get into (for my sins). Snyder apologists yell at ME for "being a Marvel fanboy" but the truth is, I love the DC characters and I wish they were getting good movies. But it's exactly correct that until Marvel came along, 98% of what we were getting in this genre were being brought to us by people who were trying to make the characters "more cool" in complete blind defiance of the fact that there is a REASON they have endured for decades (HINT: It is because they are [mostly] already pretty cool).

You see that in Hollywood a lot. You have two movies come out that are very similar in terms of story and plot, but one goes over and the other one doesn't. The big example I can think of is "Armageddon" and "Deep Impact" which were very similar but Armageddon went over with audiences way better than Deep Impact did. There are other examples such as "The Prestige" and "The Illusionist" and "White House Down" and "Olympus has Fallen." In 2016 we had Captain America: Civil War and Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice (which still sounds like a supreme court case to me) and Civil War was one of the biggest movies of the year and BVS wasn't and caused a lot of fan backlash.

@Brandon Kman Did you watch part one of this series? because one of Movie Bob's arguments is that the version of Batman portrayed in this movie really doesn't have more depth. The version in BvS is defined by what he ISN'T. He's defined by NOT being like any of the other versions of Batman we see previously. There isn't actually much to the version they create on screen in terms of "depth." Also if we are going by what is "comic accurate" what comic/comics are we using as a litmus test? Batman: Year One where we have a specific scene of him fighting to save the life of someone he accidentally knocks off a fire escape even though he is getting beaten in the head repeatedly? The Batman from John Byrne's original Man of Steel series who doesn't try to hunt down and murder Superman and actually seems to respect him when they first meet? The version from "Under the Red Hood" who tells Jason Todd that he will never kill? The version from Grant Morrison's JLA run who has a secret "sci-fi closet?" I suppose you could say "The version from the dark knight returns!" but even then while you can see elements of that comic influence they stage certain scenes...there really isn't much connecting the version of Batman we see in the film to the one we see in the comic aside from the fact that both are old and are coming out of retirement.

Yes, I could see Batman assuming Superman was talking about more kryptonians hiding on Earth and not give two shits about it. My suggestion would fall along the same lines as Bob's: first, change the flashback to Bruce's parents' death. Instead of having Jeffrey Dean Morgan clench his fist and try to fight Joe Chill (why did that even happen?), have Chill knock Thomas to the ground, hold him at gun point and then Martha throws herself between the two, getting shot in the process. When you get to the fight, later on, have Lois Lane throw herself between the two and defend Superman, stage it like in the flashback, throw in a literal flash of the previous scene for full effect, and have Batman get to the same conclusion more organically.

There's an old adage in film writing - Coincidence is a great way to get a character into a problem, and a lazy way to get them out. Martha is the mother of all coincidences. It undercuts what little theming and dramatic tension had been built, and cheats the audience out of any real payoff.

  • @FangsFirst
    @FangsFirst6 жыл бұрын

Bob, regarding the "Martha" source--watch an interview with Snyder regarding most of these movies. That clumsy, faux cleverness reeks of him. I'm talking interviews where he talks about how Batman kills people "left and right" in the Dark Knight Returns (actual murders by Batman: zero), or how running people over doesn't count as killing (it's "indirect", so...somehow that doesn't count as murder. Somehow.), how he thinks superheroes in costume talking to each other looks ridiculous (see: shame about making superhero movies), or, well, any of his work at adaptation...he doesn't really get characters, or how to insert trivia, concepts, ideas, or much of anything other than a visual style that may or may not be your cup of tea. "Heh, didja see that? Y'ain't gettin' that from a Marvel movie," and "These movies are superheroes for adults," comments feel like they pour not only from his fanbase, but from his own insipid commentary in interviews (and his films). It's visible in ham-fisted moments like the string of Martha Wayne's pearls inexplicably wrapping itself around Joe Chill's gun to achieve a pretentious image that looks absurd, but the film-maker seemingly can't recognize. In the ridiculously unnecessary lunge of Thomas Wayne to assert his masculinity before being shot (apparently incapable of understanding that one does not *have* to do this when threatened, and muddying the waters of *why* Chill shoots...). Batman being relentlessly murderous ("but it doesn't count!"). These comments around those murders, especially, also emphasize that the thematic elements you describe related to the "so far gone" completely went over the director's own head. It doesn't guarantee the sourcing of this or any other decision (realistically, it's unlikely that we can ever discern such things, what with the faultiness of human memory). But as someone who has hated every Zack Snyder movie I've seen since 2004 for effectively the same reasons (failure to comprehend source material, insistence on upping the ultraviolent, toxic masculinity factor of everything, presumably to make it "cooler" because of the way it is depicted, typically without regard for the plot, characters, concepts, themes, or anything short of the "neat moment" itself) this kind of thing is just more of the same. It's harsh, but the evidence, I think, supports it: Snyder is not a deep man, and has the same "Dude, so cool!!" attitude endemic of the most vocal, paranoid, conspiracy-seeking fans of these particular movies. (Maybe this is what Part 3 will cover, but your comments in Part 1 indicate, to me, an entirely forgiving attitude toward an extremely shallow filmmaker with a very unique visual style and little else)

Cap winter soldier=spy thriller, Homecoming=teenager coming of age romance. Gotg is space opera, ... see the pattern? • @pittland44

I totally agree. Another great example was Ragnarok, which they straight up played as an Indie buddie cop movie (and they got a director who's very familiar with that type of film in Taika Waititi) and the whole thing went off without a hitch. This is also why Marvel has been able to avoid quote "Superhero Fatigue" because all of their movies are different and you never know what to expect. A great example of this is the massive success of such films and the two Guardians of the Galaxy movies and Black Panther, which were radically different than anything else they had done. Hell, Infinity War was an extreme departure that followed the main villain more than any other character, and probably had to because there were too many other characters to actually execute the film any other way. Marvel hasn't had any type of fan burnout because they've continuously tried to up their game and keep bringing in new characters, tell new stories and continue to give us (the fans) something new each time we see their movies, all while doing their damnedest to write, cast and develop characters that we love and want to follow. Unfortunately if Marvel is the case study in how to do this right (and so far they're really the only ones who've been able to pull this off successfully) then DC is the example of what not to do. The problem with this type of analysis is there isn't a single answer to unlock or explain the failure of the DCEU. The reason is as Bob points out it's not one big thing but rather multiple small items in succession that created a domino effect which ultimately led to the failure of Justice League as a film. The biggest problem that I can honestly point to is two sided, but they're ultimately connected. WB hasn't had a good idea of what to do with the DC characters since The Dark Knight. Dark Knight Rises was okay, but it clearly had problems and fell a little flat. They also don't have anyone in charge with a centralized plan or vision. Now, do they have to have everything 100% figured out off the bat? No, but even having a generalized idea of what to do would have been extremely helpful. It honestly seems like there isn't really anyone in charge at WB with this stuff and that seems to be a major part of the failure. The problem is that they've burned a lot of fans and a lot of people are now actively avoiding them. We'll see what Aquaman and Shazam and WW2 come up with, but at this point I doubt we'll see Flash, The Batman, Cyborg, Man of Steel 2 or a Justice League 2 anytime soon.

tamzgaming I notice that Kyle never actually said that Marvel is perfect (there are some glaring plot holes in Incredible Hulk and Spiderman Homecoming) but that wasn't the argument either. The argument was that Marvel doesn't limit themselves to a single genre for their movies (and they absolutely do not) and this is a big part of their success (which I agree with). As to Marvel doing damage to their characters, I want you to list off all the damage they've done.

tamzgaming I'm seeing three key patterns emerge with your posts: 1) You have an extremely hard time making an argument without resorting to vitriol and ad hominem attacks on anyone who might disagree with you. 2) You really don't know how to convince someone to your point of view because otherwise you would at least try to not be an arrogant asshole. 3) You are making the case that deviation from the comics source material is always bad and particularly deleterious to the characters, I know for a fact that it's not. Also, I am well aware of the simple truth that they can't 100% copy and replicate the comics into movie form, simply put it would not work. Either from a practical standpoint, a story standpoint or ultimately a business standpoint. There are a ton of changes they've done from the source material, and I would argue that almost all were either beneficial or neutral in their effect on the characters and their stories. Many were for film or business purposes and some were quite necessary (such as Not calling M'Baku Man Ape as he's known in the comics, that would have gone very badly).

dMb I don’t think he really cared that much about the rest of the world. He pretends that his motivations is to stop Superman with his ”silver bullet” if he ever turns evil but it turns out that that’s not what he actually wants. He just wants humanity to see God the way he does. Superman being the closest thing to a God. *The oldest lie in America is that power can be innocent* *No man in the sky intervened when I was a boy to deliver me from daddy’s fists and abominations. I figured out way back, that if God is all good, then he cannot be all powerful. And if he is all powerful, then he cannot be all good. And neither can you be. They need to see the fraud that you are, with their eyes. The blood on your hands* *I don’t hate the sinner. I hate the sin. And yours, my friend, is existing* If Superman dies, *the sin* dies with him. If Superman kills Batman, then he has proven that power cannot be innocent. If humanity dies after that, I don’t think he’d care. The dude killed people left and right.

john o Lex wanted to kill the image of God literally and/or figuratively. Superman was the closest thing to a God, many humans saw him as a God, so Lex went after him. He manipulated the public and Bruce Wayne by framing Superman for murder. Everywhere Superman went, Luthor wanted death. This was the ”figurative” death of God. Because a God is meant to have unlimited power, yet Superman failed to stop all these atrocities, like the senate bombing, from happening. Remember, ”If God is all good, then he cannot be all powerful. And if he is all powerful, then he cannot be all good. And neither can you be. They need to see the fraud you are, with their eyes”. If he figuratively kills the image of God/Superman, by proving that he is all powerful but not all good, then people will turn against him, the way they were doing in the film. If he kills Superman literally, with the help of Batman or Doomsday, then he’s proven that God/Superman is *maybe* all good but definitely not all powerful. And by killing him literally, he will have gotten his revenge against the ”man in the sky” that never came to save him when he was a child. Lex never cared about humanity. He just wanted them to see God the way he did. As a fraud.

The same clueless nitwit who thinks Martian Manhunter is boring, agreed that She-Hulk was made for his cousin to have someone to f***, and the majority of his career (including his directorial debut) is an overly drawn out example of "the only thing lower than the average IQ of Hollywood execs is their standards". 1:02:37 Right here, is why The Last Jedi is not “cinematic garbage.” Not saying that you can be angry or happy with Luke’s portrayal in the film, but the film manages to actually give an actual reason to do it. The whole movie spends most of its narrative building up the big mystery of “Why is Luke not normal?” only to come in and explain it, so that after being angry at himself for doing something that goes completely against character, he can still have closure and show up why we’ve always loved him. BvS on the other hand, gives us an entire sequence where Superman is a Nazi and doesn’t do anything meaningful to say out of it, and it also leaves zero impact on the film’s narrative except as a cheap way for Batman to want to fight Superman.

In HP's defense, it was written from the beginning as a continuity-based series. There's not really any way to do the whole series in one movie (especially since the books were still being written at the time of the first movie), and no reason NOT to do a movie for each book to tell the whole story. The all the MCU movies leading up to the Avengers didn't have to be interconnected. Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, and Incredible Hulk all had self-contained plots, largely linked together by the stingers in each one. The fact that the Marvel Universe is pretty much built to be interconnected and they largely hit it out of the park is just icing on the cake/salt in the wound depending on your viewpoint. To sum up: Harry Potter: Pretty much needed to be a franchise to tell the whole story. MCU: Didn't have to be a franchise, but chose to be one when they realized they had a good team and their movies were doing gangbusters.

The fact is that Snyders love of Rands works had a weird effect on a lot of BVS. Case in point, Lex Luthor. The reason they had to change Lex is Lex, much like Bruce Wayne, isn't far off from the character of Howard Rourke in "The Fountainhead." The problem is that Lex is supposed to be the villain and that doesn't fit with Snyders worldview so he had to make him unrecognizable from his comic book counterpart.

You take two characters that have long-established philosophical differences about what they do and how they do it, and instead of leaning on that pre-existing contrast (which is the main thing that makes putting these two in the same room interesting), you make your movie's central conflict a misunderstanding, manufactured by the villain, that one party KNOWS is a misunderstanding manufactured by the villain before the major throw-down happens. WHY?

The best resolution for their traditional ideological conflict is a simple "each party realizes that they do not have a monopoly on virtue, and decides try and reach out in understanding and toleration." Have them realize this after they are both tired out from the initial battle, giving a chance for their emotions to cool and for them to see the damage to their surroundings. Of course, this works best if they aren't trying to murder each other for incoherent reasons, in the first place.

That instantly endears him both to the audience, but to the other rich dude traumatized by dead parents, what was his name again? Oh right, Bruce Wayne! Bonus points for complexity: Lex misses his parents, but deep down he's also glad they're gone. Not because they abused him, but their loss enabled him to take over Lexcorp, and eclipse his father's legacy. I can just picture Lex ripping on Batman: "Look at you pointy-ears. Wasting your life moaping over your mommy and daddy, and dressing up in a fucking Halloween costume at night. Pathetic! I lost my parents, but did I go all to pieces? No, I THRIVED!" Just as Bob has his theory that the Joker and Lex were originally supposed to be in this film and they just mashed the characters together I have my own theory that much of Batman's reasons for hating Superman were supposed to be Lex's but were shifted to Bruce. Lex has always been the foil to Superman, the normal human with the mental superiority clashing with the superhuman with physical superiority. Him being suspicious, even scared, of Supes and putting on a public face of benevolence while working to undermine him behind the scenes would have fit his character perfectly. Hell, you wouldn't even need the "hates god, angry at his daddy, etc" BS. It could come down to a cold, simple truth. From Lex's perspective men are, at their core, vain, greedy creatures who will do whatever it takes to get what they want. He himself is exhibit A of that. So what about a "Superman?" Sooner or later, one way or the other, he's going to want something. What's going to happen to the rest of us mere mortals when that day arrives? It's an understandable and frankly legitimate fear that could have played out much better than Lex Riddler. And that's probably the most frustrating thing about BvS: concepts like that were just sitting there, ready to be used and explored and instead Snyder and Co snubbed them in favor of making the characters, plot, and story as complicated and convoluted as possible.

At around 1:02:45 when you say "betcha you don't see *this* in a Marvel movie!" - I'm betting that words to that exact effect have been said in planning meetings for these films. (I work in computer games, where this happens all the damn time.) I wonder what would happen to the person who said "yes, which is probably why everyone loves the Marvel movies". I think Warner Bros, at a top level, are in complete denial about Marvel's success. There's old rumours [1] that WB ordered "no jokes" for their DC films back in 2014, in order to differentiate themselves from Marvel's lighter and softer touch. Attempting to differentiate is a reasonable course of action if DC vs Marvel were pulling similar viewing figures (although "no jokes" would still be an awful idea), but when they're so clearly behind WB should be going over the Marvel films carefully and studying what makes those films work. They can then take what they've learned and say "we're going to do the same thing, but better". Sure, they'll find themselves in direct competition with Marvel a lot more, but they can figure out how to differentiate themselves once they've pulled alongside. (And honestly, just having a different roster may be differentiation enough.) Secondly: I don't think that red jacket is too much. In terms of setting Lex up as a satisfying villain, there's a problem with the script if it feels like the villain's master plan plays out so perfectly not because he's just that cunning but either because everyone else in the plot is a giant dumb-dumb or because said villain apparently has far reaching probability altering powers. Just because his plan worked doesn't feel like it should have worked in any sane universe. He doesn't feel like an evil genius, he feels like he had a copy of the script and nobody else did.

Came back here after watching the JL Snyder cut - all those directing errors are EVERYWHERE in that movie! The continuity error of Cyborg's origin is actually retconned AGAIN. It's like Snyder can't even remember what scene he shot in the previous movie this is hilariously embarrassing. Spoiler: in JL Snyder cut Victor's father founded a way to partially activate the mother box before the death scream of Superman caused the awakening of those boxes, that is why Luther has footages of Cyborg before the death of Superman. However the email short movies depicts Victor's father looking like he didn't know why the mother box suddenly activated whereas in the JL Snyder cut it was shown he deliberately charged the mother box with power and activated it in order to save Victor. Snyder is just BAD at constructing narratives that lasts over 2 minutes.

One thing that always baffled me is why anyone in BvS would assume that Diana is anything other than a Kryptonian when she suddenly shows up at the end... Because what everyone in the universe knows is that the only persons that has had superpowers is from Krypton, and here a young, seemingly indestructable woman in a flamboyant suit (also colored in red yellow and blue) shows up and flips around with superhuman speed and strengths and has high ideals of justice and integrity fighting alongside he who seems indestructible, wears a flamboyant red yellow and blue outfit and sports superhuman speed and strength... and who has high ideals of justice and integrity. Yes, she also has a glowing noose (not identified yet as anything other than an incadescent rope, I might add) instead of laser eyes, but that is about everything anyone would know about her when she shows up. And if you're going to crowbar in a female equivalent of Superman into the end.. an equivalent who supposedly is NOT affected by Kryptonite... Then why not show why she couldn't be the one to spear Doomsday, (who's name was so clumsily referenced that I will refuse to call him anything other than that hulk clone from the Edward Norton film)? So, yes, in so many ways do I feel and agree that Wonderwoman was one of the worst inclusions in BvS. Not casting or acting wise... Those were far above expactations. But simply because of how useless and nonsensical she ended up being in the film.

If they were going to bring back General Zod and make him into a monster, they should have made him into some "Bizarro" version of Superman. I mean, if the embryonic chamber could turn Zod into something that looks like Doomsday, it isn't that much of a stretch to write it so that is causes him to come back severely disfigured, half-crazed (like Superman was in JL) and with inverted powers (heat breath and freezing vision). There was no reason to bring in Doomsday this early.

ViralAgent1 No *good* reason to bring in Doomsday. There is a reason to bring in Doomsday in this movie, but it has to with the Death of Superman being a high selling comic. I think even a Bizarro version of Zod would have been fine.

I watched BVC UC last night with my partner, she is someone who doesn't follow comic books or the films but will watch the good ones on occasions. It was amazing how an outsider's perspective can highlight issues I neglected to realise. When Lex introduced and is showing the senator kryptonite in hopes to get the government on side with this plan (I think) she asked "why is he being so obviously shady? Wouldn't it be better if he was normal, like friendly and smart and publically known as being a nice guy, he is clearly weird. Wouldn't acting nice and not shady encourage the senator to be on board?" I was always indifferent to Jesse's take on the character and the overall writing and direction of his character but that simple observation made me realise just how piss poor of a take it was on such a interesting character.

Because Lex's character was an abused child. We are given that information when he is about to release doomsday from the Kyrptonian Ship. How his father use to punch him and that God never protected him from his dad's fist of abominations. His character is suppose to also be direct reference to how those young geeky scientist of our day and age. He also is very comic relevant to Superman Birthright Lex Luthor. It wasn't piss poor, you just haven't realized how great Jesse actually did. Get off the hate train man, there's a lot to appreciate from the movie.

I seriously think the "Batman being corrupted" is not actual text from the movie but fans of the movie looking too much into it trying to defend it. Nothing says Batman didn't act super violent before the movie. That just seems Zack Snyder's super weird interpretation of the character.

I hated the Martha scene too, but for a different reason: Batman is a murderer. He’s killed several people in this movie. If it weren’t for that fact, I’d be fine with it. If Batman doesn’t kill Superman because he realizes he’d be killing someone who has people he loves, the very thing that drove him to become Batman, then how has he justified killing criminals up to this point. Is this really a realization that’s eluded him for years? Why didn’t Alfred tell him this? The Batman I know watched his parents get murdered so he refuses kill because he knows how devastating that is to families. That Batman works in this scene because he hasn’t crossed that line yet and almost betrayed the very reason he became a hero. But the fact that he didn’t redeems him so it works. Snyder’s Batman on the other hand, lost his parents so he built a car that he can ram into criminals cars and blow them up, and a stealth bomber with with mounted machine guns he uses to mow down anyone who gets in his way. At this point he is several orphaned children past the point of redemption so what’s the point? He didn’t care before why would he now?

Batman being a killer doesn't even make sense in this universe because why hasn't he killed Joker, Harley Quinn, Killer Croc, Black Mask, Deadshot, Zsasz and Deathstroke? If he's ok with killing why doesn't just blow up Arkham Asylum? It makes no sense how he's ok with killing low life thugs who have families to feed but he doesn't kill a heartless killer in the Joker

What they should've done is have Batman go to the brink of nearly killing and then when he has that nightmare where he does kill people, that should make him realise that he's going too far and should calm down

I'm faux disappointed that you didn't comment on one of my biggest pet peeves about the film, which is the continual referencing of Gods. It made sense when Lex Lutor did it in the source comic "Lex Luthor: Man Of Steel" because Lex was speaking poetically. But Snyder continually makes people LITERALLY be referencing Superman as being a God. Someone or something isn't a God because they are powerful. A God is someone or something that is in communication with the spiritual or the divine. At no point in time does the film actually comment on this in any intelligent way. It's like if everyone in the film kept referring to Batman as a Ghost despite the fact that he's running around punching people and getting stabbed. You can't just use lots of lofty, poetic words and think that it makes your script poetry. It has to also make some semblance of sense and be intelligent.

Well, there's a reason why the DC fighting game is called "Injustice: Gods Among Us." One of the common definitions of god is: an adored, admired, or *_supremely powerful_* person. It's that usage that makes it appropriate in that game title. There is a reason the list of DC characters is referred to as a "pantheon."

  • @Alknix

    @Alknix

Well, yes, we use the word. But we don't use it literally. We can call this or that person "A god of nerds/classical music/poker/Starcraft/etc", but it's always metaphorical. Even in Injustice I don't recall any religious connotations unironically attribtuted to any of the characters. Besides, it's a game title. Exaggeration is admissable, if not expected, there for marketing purpose of eye catching alone. But if you're actually going to discuss in all seriousness whether or not a character qualifies as a god, he'd better done something more impressive than bench press a rocket or save a girl from a fire.

You know, whenever somebody brings up the Wonder Woman didn't do anything for 100 years argument, they forget the most important thing; F**KING ZOD! ! Every other tragedy can be explained away as men being men. Btw ZOD came to Earth with the intention of KILLING all of humanity. And she sat on her ass taking first class intercontinental flights to purchase art, I guess? She didn't spring into action when this GLOBAL threat appeared. And Neither did Batman OR Atlantis. Man of Steel makes BvS look sh*t but it also makes every concept sh*tty in comparison due to there being no reason super skilled or super powered ppl didn't fight this global threat. There wasn't even an ATTEMPT to mobilize. So if Superman died in Man of Steel, then what would BvS have to say?

Thanks so much for all the effort to break down this film (and basically all the others in the franchise thus far) beyond just "it sucks!" We all know it's disappointing, but why? The "I thought she was with you" joke doesn't even makes sense. Batman already knows who she is and has had a conversation with her. Maybe, maybe it works if Batman asks Superman if she is with him (thinking maybe they were friends and he didn't know) and Superman says 'i thought she was with you'...maybe. Or maybe Batman doesn't get files on her until later...just something.

Yes, it makes sense that he'd do it. But Ayn Rand's philosophy, ignoring the sheer scale of the fact that it doesn't work in any environment, runs completely contradictory to Superman as a character. In fact, it's fair to say that objectivism is something that Superman in all prior instances defined as something he stood against.

I think the “Batmab spares Superman” scene may have worked better if Supes had said something like. “I’m sorry, Mom.” That could have worked in that it affirma Superman’s humanity to Batman while reminding him of his own lost family. But that’s not what happened and it seems nobody cared enough to make sure it happened in a way that made sense.

Mainly being the fact that SHAZAM is supposed to be powered by these same gods or Neptune's hold over the city of Atlantis, it does sound like a Zack idea in general but i am wandering if was worth it now as a plot point.
