This cancelled Batman project was an open world stealth action game being made by Pandemic Studios to be published by EA. It was in development from 2006 to 2008, and was originally meant to release alongside The Dark Knight movie. The game would also feature actors from the film doing voiceover. Liam Robertson is a video game researcher and archiver. In his spare time, Liam creates videos and articles for Unseen64, but will also be contributing to the DidYouKnowGaming channel.

    +PlagueOfGripes I agree - seeing the process of a game going through development, having problems and getting cancelled, with reference to specific things that went wrong, is definitely more interesting. However, I think it's also probably down to the amount of information that can be found out about the projects in question, as I have no doubt that a lot of cancelled projects are intentionally kept secret. By the way, hello, Plague.

    +Kyricolossus People talk about Pandemic, and all those other dead game studios like they're literally deceased. But they're not: organizations like this are ideas, and if the people who make it up care enough, they can always drop what they're doing and re-make and re-name the studio. If they actually are dead and gone, that means that the people in them thought that they didn't need to or just plain shouldn't be continued, and rarely is the host the last person to realize his illness. Don't be sad about it, for if Pandemic and all of it's MIA ilk were still around today, you'd probably hate them.

    I hate when a company feels they have to release a movie based game to collide with the release date of the film. Goldeneye came out 2 years after the film and that is named the best game based off a movie. Also I remember reading that Ledger had recorded lines for this game but don't know how true that is.

  • @liateRdnalkcoB

    @liateRdnalkcoB

    Of course nowadays, titles move in and out of the public eye much quicker than when Goldeneye was released. But yes, rushing for release dates = terrible adaptations. A movie isn't complete until its complete, and a game based on it should be based on the complete state, so having them release simultaneously is a recipe for disaster.

    +KevinT1149 I think it has more to do with how each contract is made, for instance in this video it's said that their rights to "use" the movie would run out in december of that year, making it impossible to release it afterwards, although I do agree with you that it needs more time to be a good game

    ( warning: rant about how making a game is difficult and people should stop bullying companies) And yet everyone keeps asking for more content. Jeez that's a lot to program, and being peer pressured to release the game that's not finished yet then people hate on it because infinite storage space for frame rate and debugging doesn't exist. Like valve working on half life 3 or chapter 2 part 2. Somebody is trying to come up with new game mechanics, a compelling script fans won't hate, original puzzles, and program that.

    +Tank207 I don't think EA is to blame in this case. They bought the license with a strict deadline already and gave them a lot of resourses to achieve the goal, it's just that there were a lot of development problems. Even tough EA has done some dickish things, you can't blame them for shutting the studio down after losing that much money (and they did offer the chance to relocate). This would have happened no matter what publisher it was.

    It's not EA's fault, they should have picked another engine and rebuild with it, it would have given them time to finish the game instead of spending a year trying to stabilize an engine that they did not understand. This is why developers shouldn't be rushed to have a game adaption of movies. Even when they do come out, they tend to be mediocre anyway. I am curious if this cancelled game had any influence on Batman: Arkham Asylum, though. Specifically, the idea of a dark, open world, stealth action Batman game.

    With the Arkham series now done, they should do a series of games based in the world of Nolan's trilogy. Just imagine the gameplay of that series put into the world of the Dark Knight. We could get a Heath Ledger Joker, Tom Hardy Bane, Cillian Murphy's Scarecrow, Hathaway's Catwoman and maybe TDK trilogy-inspired designs for new villains like Penguin, Riddler or others. As much as I do love the Arkham games, an open world Batman game in a more realistic/less cartoony city would've actually been pretty cool. The Arkham games can sometimes feel like a slightly more realistic Schumacher Gotham, while TDK series is straight up Chicago/Pittsburgh/actual cities.

    I really love learning about stuff like this. Just seeing what was going on behind the scenes can sometimes be far more interesting than the final product. Makes me miss the retrospectives GameTrailers made as they went into detail as to how a game came to exist, not just what that game was like to play (and now the idea of DYKG doing franchise retrospectives and timelines really interests me).

  • @leonro

    @leonro

    8 жыл бұрын

    The Arkham series was developed by Warner Bros Studios, who sold previously the rights to Batman games to EA, but after the contract expired, they could make whatever they wanted. They probably anticipated the moment the contract would expire and started making a game before that. EA can't sue them for making a game with their rights as long as they don't fill in a patent or do anything official to show it to the public.
