BATMAN & ROBIN (1997) Revisited: DC Movie Review

Matt Reeves’ The Batman has successfully rebooted the franchise again, with Robert Pattinson’s take on the Caped Crusader a hit with audiences and critics. It’s incredible how far the series has come and how versatile it’s been, but let’s take a step back to a time that was less kind to the Batman saga. In 1997, Joel Schumacher’s Batman & Robin came close to cratering the series, earning terrible reviews and underwhelming box office. So what happened?
In this episode of DC Revisited, we examine how Batman & Robin initially seemed like a sure-fire smash. 1995’s Batman Forever was a huge hit, and a follow-up was quickly put into production. However, the cracks started to show right away, with star Val Kilmer opting out of a follow-up due to poor relations with Schumacher and his wish to focus on his passion project, The Saint. George Clooney was signed as a replacement, while Chris O’Donnell returned as Robin. To play Mr. Freeze, they chose the great Arnold Schwarzenegger, while Uma Thurman would play the movie’s other big bad, Poison Ivy. Alicia Silverstone, then red-hot after starring in Clueless, was signed on to play Batgirl.
Initially, things seemed to be going well, so much so that for a while, it looked like Schumacher and company would jump right into another sequel, Batman Triumphant. But then came the test screenings and early reviews, all of which were toxic. There’s a lot to unpack in this episode of DC Revisited, so strap yourselves in for a deep dive into perhaps the most widely reviled superhero movie ever.

Hell, "The Lego Batman Movie" handled this spades better than this film. Amazing how the film literally based on a toy set was less of a toy commercial than the "Live-Action" approach. I don't think it's at all wrong to enjoy this film, but not to pretend that it is some misunderstood masterpiece or underrated gem or something. It's a toy commercial, plain and simple.

The problem is, I think, how ppl crucify Joel for the movie. We're decades away from it, but WB did the SAME mistakes with the DCEU movies. WB don't understand that, if people say they didn't enjoy movie cause it's too dark (that movie being Bvs or Returns) they won't fix it by adding silly jokes on post (JL or Forever) and drastically changing the course of the movies with artists being choked by stupid rules. Also, people usually use "it's too dark" or "it's to silly" to point narrative inconsistencies inside the movie. Returns was mostly planned around cool looks with production being messed by a strike and BvS had too many cooks in a kitchen run by Snyder. AND B&R is a unexpected turn, but it isn't bad.

The irony of Joel Schumacher is that he had the ability to direct a great Batman film, having perfected the gothic comic book movie with _The Lost Boys._ Unfortunately, WB hired him to make McDonald's commercials.

I remember seeing A LOT of people walk out of the theater for this movie back in 1997. I think seeing any movie with a group of people can make it more fun, compared to just either by yourself or with one or two other people. I went with my buddy, we hated. But I've gone to see terrible movies more recently with groups of coworkers, and we have fun even if the flick is shitty.

I like the fan theory that suggests that the reason for the over the top camp and bright colours that just didn't match the Gotham we'd seen before is that the Batman and Robin movie was actually a Stage Play. It would explain some of the absurdities, like the 'Batman on Ice' bit (he just happened to have ice-skates built in? Really?). It would also explain the colourful Gotham. Maybe it was a PR thing, or perhaps the stage play really was (mostly) aimed at kids.

I love all four of the 80s/90s Batman movies. Batman and Robin is my favorite guilty pleasure film. I's so bad, but at the same time, it keeps me entertained and laughing. I think Poiison Ivy is the best thing about this film. Well, that and Mr. Freeze. However, I really, really hate it when people lump Batman Forever with this one. I feel that Batman Forever, was until The Dark Knight Trilogu and several of the animated films, the only movie to really focus on Batman as a character. Say what you will, bit to me, Batman Forever is a treat each time I watch it. So bright and cheery. And we could use more that these days, what with how dark our world is becoming.

As a theft deterrent, they listed the replacement cost of tapes on the clamshell box, and an employee explained to me that the retail cost and the rental licensing costs were wildly different. I had so many toys from this movie too. Man I wonder if everyone who was 6 when this came out had the same experience.

As a fan of the orginal Adam West Batman series I like this movie. Is it a good movie? Pretty much no. Is it a quirky and fun movie? Definitively yes! I'm pretty sure, that they wanted to capture the tone and humor of the original series. That being said, I also dislike most of the DC movies... not really into the super tragic, dark stuff that is way to present in most of them.

It’s telling, to me, that every time you played a clip of Mr Freeze I immediately start laughing with genuine joy 😂 to me, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Uma Thurman, and the ridiculous action set pieces carry the film on their shoulders. It’s so much fun to watch, but it’s unfortunate that it’s a bit overlong and muddled with half-baked ideas, dull moments, and (sorry George Clooney) a dull lead. I am also disappointed that Batman and Robin’s relationship regresses compared to the previous film and just rehashes it, but worse.

I know I am in the minority, but I love this stupid movie when I was younger. Arnold Schwarzenegger was 100% over the top and was like a James Bond baddie meets Mystery Science Theater 3000. He was so funny and for $1 million a min, he sure got his money's worth. The rest, naw, not much to say except that George Clooney played the best Bruce Wayne, cause lets face it, George Clooney is as close to a real life Bruce Wayne so it was the best part for him. This is certainly not the best Superhero movie, but if its on, please watch it. You can add all of Mr. Freeze's one liner like "Chill out!" to Jingle all the Way's "PUT THAT COOKIE DOWN!!"

I personally enjoy this movie. Plenty of people liked Forever, but everyone hates this installment. I'll take Batman & Robin any day. Also, all I ever hear is how over the top Schwarzenegger was, but I actually found Uma Thurman much more silly and over the top. Schwarzenegger makes this movie for me lol. Just like the rest of the cast, he knows exactly what kind of campy kids movie he's a part of and he's having a blast 😂

After many years I see it differently. It's not a good movie but rather "so bad it's good". It's silly, and campy, with colours taken from Unreal Tournament. Schwarzenegger's one-liners make for a great drinking game (drink every time there's a reference to ice - you won't even remember the film later :D). Clooney didn't seem to be taking the script seriously and his acting looks very tongue-in-cheek (probably after realizing the batsuit had bat-nipples :D). It's just one of the movies which nowadays are a "guilty pleasure". When it was released I was expecting a more serious Burton-like tone but years passed and it's good that such a bad film has been made. It's a bad Batman movie but a good live-action cartoon and at my age, I noticed that sometimes such silliness is necessary when life gets too serious :)

Funnily enough, I recently had myself a rewatch of this flick on good ole' VHS not too long ago. I personally have something of a 'love/hate' relationship with this film; I've warmed up to some of its over-the-top, colorful, and toyetic tone. I feel George Clooney's *Bruce Wayne* alone (when he's outside of the Bat-suit) is commendable, Chris O'Donell is good as Robin/Dick Grayson again (even if he does come across as a bit whinier), and Alicia Silverstone and Uma Thurman I genuinely like as Batgirl and Poison Ivy. *No disrespect* whatsoever to Arnold; I can tell he's giving his over-the-top all as Mr. Freeze, but his constant 'Ice Puns' ALWAYS make me ROAR like a LION (🦁) in frustration. And Bane...good _LORD!_ What've they DONE to him (😱)! WHY are the GCPD and especially _Gordon_ reduced to utter BUFFOONERY? Elle Macpherson's Julie Madison is in this WHY? And why DOES Mr. Freeze keep a SNOWFLAKE BABE around his lair? BUT...the scenes involving Alfred and the Bat-family (especially the ones with him and Bruce), plus the sub-plot of him falling ill, I feel are handled VERY well and come across as genuinely touching (👏). I love Elliot Goldenthal's music again, there are good-&-talented artists on the soundtrack, and I *do* actually have to give props for the design and look of Gotham City; it really can give one the impression of being in a totally _'comic book'_ world, completely distinct from reality. So overall, I for one don't think "Batman and Robin" is the _"worst,"_ but it's definitely NOT the best Batman flick, either. It falls somewhere in between; 5 stars out of 10 for me.
