One of the best things about Batman is that you can write him in almost whatever way you like. You wanna write him as a cynical, mistrustful asshole? You can. You wanna write him as a tortured soul who beats up criminals to avoid facing his problems? You can. You wanna write him as an awkward but loving dad doing his best (recommend the Wayne Family Adventures webcomic)? You totally can. You wanna write him as a noir detective in a trench-coat? Go right ahead
Wait, you’re telling there’s a story where Batman in Victorian England hunts Jack the Ripper and has art by Mike Mignola? Sign me up!

Mignola always does great stuff. He did some of my favourite Wolverine stories. He also had some He-Man sketches recently, alongside a variant cover for the new DC comic. That made me really want him to do a MOTU series.

He also did The Doom that Came to Gotham which is basically Bat the Mountains of Madness or Shadow over Waynesmouth. It’s Lovecraft Batman by Mignola is what I’m saying. Shit’s crazy.
The Face of Marvel -> Spider-Man The Face of DC -> Batman
The Gilded Age / late Victorian Era are so underutilized in modern fiction. The dichotomy of the classes, the new technologies & ways of thinking, etc. offer so much to work with. Batman is perfect for the setting. Everything about him is right at home. A great video on a great story.

also would be cool do other books like Gotham by Gaslight, there's also Wonder Woamn Amazonia ho have the same concept of Gotham by Gaslight, also i would like a "Metropolis by Gaslight" comic (with also the Kryptonian tech who is like the alien tech of 1800s sci-fi stories and novels like War of the Worlds) and after put those 19th century superheroes in a 1890s JLA crossover. also i would really like a Marvel universe set in victorian age (something similar to Marvel 1602 or Marvel Noir), i also have in mind to write this (like i have in mind to make Spider-Man the chosen one of the african god Anansi and fighting a possesed Norman Osborn, or Hulk as an heroic Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, or Captain America who is an American Civil War hero, and like Batman, a Daredevil who fight Jack the Ripper in Hell's Kitchen)
Man, as a Victorian era nut, I loved this mythology. I grew up with gothic horror and read stories like Dr. Jerykll and Mr. Hyde, the invisible man, and Bram Stoker’s Dracula. It’s what eventually got me into comics through the gothic setting of Batman. Edit: I also love that Jim Gordon was drawn to look like Teddy Roosevelt.
It's fantastic how they managed to make a whole film from such a short and nonsubstantive story.

Yeah they changed a lot of stuff
I've always really enjoyed the aesthetic of Gotham by Gaslight. Mignola's art style and the Victorian setting provide the perfect backdrop for an Elseworlds Batman story. Great to learn all the history behind the comic!
Gotham by Gaslight would make a great live action elsewords movie, along with Superman: Red Son and Kingdom Come.

Facts bro I would literally die for a red son or kingdom come movie or injustice
I recommend Batfeed’s Gotham 1889 series here on KZread. He basically takes Gotham By Gaslight and further expands on it for those who want to see more of this concept. Also there’s GiantPandaKing’s Gotham 1919-1939 book which reimagines Batman and Gotham between the World Wars.
I can’t imagine a world without Batman. Best Dc Character with the best comics of all time!!!

more like Greatest that isn't Superman who is underrestamated in a writing standpoint for quite some time now
This is my second favourite alternate Batman story. My number one was from 1994, Castle of the Bat. Crafting a very atmospheric Frankenstein's Monster story.
Don't forget Batman / Houdini. The Devil's Workshop (Although...most people do forget it even existed) It's not by Augustyn but it's a good follow up & even though I love Mignolas work, the art by Chiarello in it is amazing

Good point!
I think Gotham by Gaslight as well as the Superman Batman Generations, along with JLA the nail / another nail are my favorites
Video topic: Guy Gardner as Warrior
If only we got that game ;w; Great video Owen!
Great breakdown, love this story
I'd like to think that Gordon in the Gotham by Gaslight movie isn't actually Jack the Ripper, but a copycat killer.
I agree with your connection of the rise of serial storytelling with the “creation” of JTR. 👍✌️
The dedication at the beginning of the video is pure class. I'm sure Brian Augustyn would've loved your words on Gotham by Gaslight. Great video as always!
Fantastic work as always, Owen! I remember reading Gotham By Gaslight ages ago and really loving it, but I had no idea it had such a lasting legacy as the prototype for Elseworlds. Fascinating stuff!
We also lost Gorge Perez and Nieal Adams.
You know I would love to see this get adopted to a live action movie and I hope Ben Affleck comes back to play this version of Batman I still can't believe we almost got a video game based on this that would have been awesome
Fantastic video yet again!
Loved the video!
The Nail is also a favorite of mine and one I'd love to see covered some day!!
Batman is my favorite comic book character and this is one of my favorite comic books, I have been a batman fan since the animated series in 1992
Wait no mention of "Spring-Heeled Jack"!?
I love this story I actually picked it up in my local comic book shops discount bin, it also had a ripped Toronto library sticker lmfaoooo
I've had this for over 30 years... I love your video, Owen ! :)
👍🏻good stuff. I like your videos.
Just saw the movie, and I have to say this is a very good story. To be fair, I think Batman fits nicely in a dark environment as is the Victorian Era.
Happy 6th Anniversary, Batman : Gotham by Gaslight.
Excellent video I love the elseworlds stories and this is one of my favorites
Gotham by Gaslight has always been one of my most favourite Batman elseworld stories!
Great video. Salazar Knight did a recap on this story within the last year I think. Check out his channel, he could use a shout out or a collab for all the hard work he's done on the history of Batman from the Golden age to (presently) the 90s

Great video as usual. Would love to see a future video about JLA: The Nail!
This and batman:noel are some of the best stories
Fantastic video. ComicPOP has a great discussion about this book too.

They do indeed!
GREAT VIDEO!
I will never forgive what they did to this story when they made an animated adaptation. Mashing it together with its sequel. Filling it to the wazoo with easter eggs and references for no reason. Introducing a steampunk element, completely muddying what this Batman is supposed to be...And, of course, changing the ending to "sUbVeRt yOuR ExPecTaTiOnS". Whoooooooa, bet you didn't see that one coming. And as a bonus prize, that comic, whoops I meant to say cosmic, abomination Perpetua destroys this universe for the lolz.
I want to thank you for showing everybody why Batman by gaslight is the best Batman around and it was like a mini documentary! People give a like to this video show him some love that want he deserves keep up the good work man you deserve it!😎
I would really love a whole video on the elseworlds imprint and it's legacy at some point, I think you would have some interesting stuff to say
It is an amazing work of art, I have even used this graphic novel at my B.A Degree research, congratulations Owen 👍😊🏆🏆🏆🏆👏🎖👏🎖🥇🥇🥇
A back to form video.
Cool video.
Kind of a Steampunk gotham. Like that mix.
Just wanted to leave a quick comment (which you probably won't see), but I've watched a few of your videos in a row and I think you do a great job with the narration and overall presentation of your videos. I've subscribed to your channel and look forward to watching your next videos. All the best

@@OwenLikesComics no problem. I'm only a very occasional comic reader so can't claim to be a huge fan. Despite that I really like watching your videos as you do a great job of presenting the information in a way that is interesting. Anyway, I just wanted to leave a positive comment to let you know I think you're doing a great job. Hope you have a great New Year and your channel continues to have more success
I'm surprised you made a video on this. I read Gotham By Gaslight for the first time a couple weeks ago and was actually disappointed. I don't think it was anything new or different.
Batman stands in the same Detective-Hero mold as The Shadow and Sherlock Holmes before him. Both of them locked horns with the Ripper both during his generation and the generation right after him, so why not show a hero create two generations hence doing the same?
Do a video on Batman Dark Knight of the Round Table!
Honestly the Twist in the Animatef Movie is better then the Hush Movie, yes it really is out of the Comics but it Works... It's an Elseword Story and it doesn't ruin the Lore of it.
Banger
Classic story. I lost my brain when I discovered it years ago.
One of my Favourite Batman Comics. I read it on a regular Basis :) What did you think about the Animated Adaption Owen? I enjoyed it as well, even the new Plottwist was great.
I would love to see a video about Lee bermejo joker book
that victorian joker omgggg
It sort of reminds me of what Spiderman noir could’ve been at its full potential
Never knew how different the ending of the comic was from the movie adaptation. What is it with DC animated movies and changing the identity of the killer?
You know what they should Take the mad Hatter and Make him like Jack the Ripper With Hypnosis in the next Robert Pattinson Batman!
I really like this animated movie
Hey I was right. You WERE working on a video 🤣
could the logan movie be considered an elseworld story
Who is super man in this universe? Do a video on that.
Man, the movie really was different from the comics.
Eyyy
I still say A Serious House On A Serious Earth which came out the same is better than Gotham By Gaslight. It's also better than The Dark Knight Returns.
One of my favorite batman stories! Hated the animated movie!
i watched the animated film,I found it pretty boring.Batman gets his can kicked a lot in the story,I grew tired of that,REAL QUICK !!! LOL. I bought the dvd at a local, pawnshop for a dollar. The animation was OKAY. Nothing to write home about. I remember seeing the comicbook at a bookstore, but when I saw the artwork by Mike Mignola,I said-AH #### NAW !!! LOL. I don't like his art at all !!! Just not for me. LOL.
If you're talking about the animated film, then I'm not really a big fan of the reveal that Gordon was Jack the Ripper. His exposition is what keeps me from liking the film.
