Brian Bolland's straight to the point way of dealing with Batman was...straight to the point.
I’d love to see a Kayfabe episode on the Solo series.

Hopefully your talking about "Solo (1994 Marvel)"
Super surprised that they dedicated so many words of affection to my teacher José Muñoz! Thank you on his behalf. I don't know if you've considered it, but perhaps you'll find it interesting to take a look at the work of another student of José Muñoz_ Francisco Solano Lopez, the illustrator of "El Eternauta", the iconic Argentinean agricultural novel published during the military dictatorship and for which its author was kidnapped and disappeared.

Love José Muñoz's art. It's like magic. As for the Eternaut, yes! That's the only Francisco Solano Lopez art that I've seen, but I thought it was excellent! Gorgeous art and storytelling in that one. Here's a video we made about it: kzread.info/dash/bejne/hIWepttqepqXk6w.html

@@CartoonistKayfabe Oh, great! I missed that video. Thank you!
Not enough people talk about Matt Wagner. Seriously underrated cartoonist.
Perfect timing guys! The new Batman B&W miniseries starts this week with some pretty great artists (Tradd Moore and JH Williams III just to name a couple).

@@roymakescomics what I find astonishing is that he does everything with a brush! I would’ve bet money that he was an all digital artist because of his level of detail and crisp line.

JH Wiliams is one of those artists that I'll get whatever he is working on. Love his stuff.
Walt Simonson told me that he was outright jealous of Ted McKeever's idea to use an autopsy as the structure for Batman to have a sort of "dialogue" with the deceased so that she would reveal who her killer was.
The end of the Simonson story seems very timely!
Really liked the Batman black and white series and have picked up the subsequent trades. Wednesday Comics and the Solo series are successful experiments in my mind, I bought them. It was a fun look guys. So many great artists in this series. Love watching you guys poor over cool sequential art.
" the abyss yawned and I fell " - two face
Matt Wagner knows how to do Batman justice. Faces is brilliant.

Matt Wagner is a dark horse for "Best Batman writer/artist no one talks about", he captures the pulp origins of the character.

I think Vol 2 has one of my favourite short story by Enrique Breccia
The Bolland & Timm stories and the Toth cover were highlights for me
Haha! You guys are reading my mind: I was just looking at those books thinking: Cartoonist Kayfabe should cover these!
KAYFABERS, the official Kubert school KZread recently uploaded those videos Ed is talking about. Check them out asap

Guys, this channel is my favorite comics channel at KZread at the moment! It’s like the wishlist I never wrote....almost every new post lately, is covering one of my favorite comics or series...... and your views are so interesting! Just keep it coming!
man, if anything's is gonna inspire one to start inking it's these stories!
I love the initial Batman: Black And White limited series from '96! Every single issue is a masterpiece! I have the trade paperback downloaded on my Kindle!
Artwork is dope, love the black and white. Might do a pen and ink piece for my channel next.
Your wrestling references are delicious! That Average Joe story by Bolland was included in a reprint of The Killing Joke here in Spain
Around the time it came out, I got a "polite rejection letter" from DC plus this mini-series signed by some of the creators. Anybody knows why? Was it some kind of promo or what?
You guys should do more episodes on Kevin Nowlan
Wow! I love black and white comic art, and you guys have satisfied my needs today!
After seeing the Silvestri piece here, I have to ask... When oh when will we finally get to be blessed with Silvestri's Batman book (that he has shared some glimpses of)?
One of my fave anthologies that I own. To me, this is what Batman is to me. A detective. I feel that this side of Batman has been missing on a massive level these last few years. That and all of the creators on this book showed me and many others that you can do anything. It’s all about the good story and artistic execution. I own volume 1 and volume 4. I’m hoping with the new 2020batman black and white series would do things in the spirit of the first 4. Even during the 2011 black and white series, it just wasn’t as interesting and experimental as the original series. The range of artists, cartoonists, of various comic genres and mediums, just hasn’t been done again with the 2011 series. So hopefully they’ll do that again for the new one.
Always been a huge, huge fan of Batman Black and White, even bought the whole run of Gotham Knights that had the b&w backup stories. The series led me to find some of my favorite Cartoonists of all time, a real gateway. I've always thought that of those first four issues, that Liberatore one is one of the weakest, and I've always kinda written him off because of that, but I will totally be giving him a second chance after Jim's recommendation! Thanks dudes.
That oldschool batmobile with the shield is one of my favs too
I have to get the tpb before finishing this episode! Another Banger.
I got to meet and chat with Kevin nowlan when i was 14, he was very encouraging, and asked about my drawings even taking a moment to give a pointer.
Ted McKeever is the man-- you should look into "Industrial Gothic" some time!
Barry Windsor-Smith reprints that cover in one of the issues of Opus but adds red lipstick to Batman. There’s a similar pinup of Marv from Sin City with lipstick and mascara. Good stuff.
Good stuff guys, it's funny, I got to meet Klaus Janson a few years ago at Heroescon, I was supper excited, got him to sign the DC guide to inking... he was crusty as hell. LOL, mighta been a bad day but it made me smile. Anyway, I forgot about this series... now I have to go dig it out and read it again.
Great video! DC was pretty amazing or at least interesting in the 90s with many of their prestige projects. Kingdom Come, some Elseworlds projects, Bizarro Comics/World (which you guys should check out; features indie creators doing humour superhero strips), Batman B&W, and even Paradox Press with the Factoid Press line (The Big Book of Freaks, Weirdos, Conspiracies, etc. (which again featured a mix of mainstream and indie artists doing non-fiction strips).
You said it best re: the meta Gaiman/ story with the wrestling analogy...it was a "loving" dismissal of Batman...all his stories being the same basic formula...just like in wrestling. They literally "go through the motions" and gave the audience what they came for, then go backstage and drop the charade...just as is done in wrestling
I used to have these. Kinda want to read them again now.
The boys the, kayfabe couple, should do the other 4 trades' worth if issues! Good stuff!
Would love to see this revived every 5 years.
Holy Shit I never heard of this Otomo Batman story!!!!!
Hey! Where did y'all say the Bruce Timm techniques were covered? The TPB collection? Love these videos
Have you guys picked up a book from Thames and Hudson called Anime Architecture? You guys would dig it for sure, definitely microscope material.
The omnibus for this is great
excellent video
Re: Gianni's style, reminds me of Alcala over Buscema's Savage Sword of Conan. Beautiful stuff
I dig the Black and White series
The Wagner panel at 47:46 is based off of the black and white film Nosferatu ( maybe) lol
There relaunching this and hopefully it’ll be good but we’ll see
Incredible!!!!
The frozen hand thing happened, think it was the westies did something similar
Ratman (Moebius)
Please cover Volume 2!
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
The new book.... is it volume 5? Or 6? We are finding confusion when we research
19:00 - 20:25 same last panels?
Man.. You shoul do Batman Broken Ciity by Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso. The series that had the unfortunate luck of been the one after Hush. It's a great history with amazing art that looks like black and white, even whit colour. But, after Hush, nobody gives two fucks about Broken City
* great experiment
