Eh-eh-oh, eh-oh

Eh-eh-oh, eh-oh
Eh-eh-oh, eh-oh
Eh-eh-oh, eh-oh
Eh-eh-oh, eh-oh
Eh-eh-oh, eh-oh
I was left to my own devices
Many days fell away with nothing to show
And the walls kept tumbling down
In the city that we love
Grey clouds roll over the hills
Bringing darkness from above
But if you close your eyes
Does it almost feel like nothing changed at all?
And if you close your eyes
Does it almost feel like you've been here before?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
We were caught up and lost in all of our vices
In your pose as the dust settled around us
And the walls kept tumbling down
In the city that we love
Grey clouds roll over the hills
Bringing darkness from above
But if you close your eyes
Does it almost feel like nothing changed at all?
And if you close your eyes
Does it almost feel like you've been here before?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
Eh-oh, eh-oh
Eh-eh-oh, eh-oh
Eh-eh-oh, eh-oh
Eh-eh-oh, eh-oh
Oh, where do we begin?
The rubble or our sins?
Oh, oh, where do we begin?
The rubble or our sins?
And the walls kept tumbling down
In the city that we love
Grey clouds roll over the hills
Bringing darkness from above
But if you close your eyes
Does it almost feel like nothing changed at all?
And if you close your eyes
Does it almost feel like you've been here before?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?

First time I heard this song I felt a good energy and I thought "oh this is a happy song". Now I know the lyric is a reference to the italian city of Pompei which was devasted by Vesuvius Volcano. I mean, how they could create a "happy song" about a tragedy? That's awesome. I liked it.

All the other kids with the pumped up kicks better run better run faster then my bullets" and " Daddy works a long day. He'd be coming home late yeah he's coming home late and he's bringing me a surprise. Cause dinner's in the kitchen and it's packed in ice" but I can see where you got that part from.

I have a theory: Babi 1994 is right. Because there is parts of the song like this: “Where do we begin? The rubble or our sins?” And: “Grey clouds roll over, The hills bringing darkness from above” I want to thank Babi 1994 for knowing this, Because I also didn’t know what this means even though I heard about pompeii 😅 (this was only when I firstly heard this)

Besides the fact of this being about Pompeii's destruction, this song might mean something different. Maybe it might mean the destruction of a relationship, weather that be a love interest, a friendship, or family relationship. Maybe it might be that you just want time to freeze and you want to go back to when you were younger, like if you "close your eyes" you can imagine that your back to how it was. Maybe it's a memory from being in a place you were when you were younger. Maybe you just listen to this song because it's amazing. For what ever reason your here, know that your not alone in what ever is happening. I don't even know who will read this, but who ever you are, know that there are people out there that support you.

this song just brings me so much nostalgia, back to the days when we were kids and the lack of worries cuz we just couldn’t understand , and all we could do is talk and daydream about is the future, and now it’s the future and all you wanna do is go back to those days, * but if you closed you eyes, does it almost feel like nothings changed at all*

This!!!! This is what brought me here today. I can’t stop thinking about the walls tumbling down in the city that we love, the clouds moving closer, bringing darkness from above: aka the people and experiences that pass away over the years, the pieces of health that diminish, the way people age and the life we can never go back to and aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa But if I close my eyes it almost feels like nothing’s changed at all Buuuut things have changed. and there’s that juxtaposition between how things can sometimes feel when we want to be comfy with our loved ones, and how things actually are decaying away and being lost every day and it makes me so sad 😂😭

Yes completely
It's been 5 years since I've learnt of this song and 4 since I've last played it, I know the lyrics by heart but I never knew it's real history until I saw someone comment about it now I can really feel it's meaning.

I remember when I was something like 5 years old, listening to this song and playing with my wooden trains. Such a nostalgic song now!
this song is my childhood, it makes me cry now.
*The nostalgia hits hard with this one*
every time I hear this song, I think of it as a mix of a happy and sad song. I look at it like how someone is remembering their past, and acknowledging the future at the same time.
I knew this song would talk about the city of Pompeii from 79 AD,Rome with the lines “grey clouds over the hills with darkness above” and lines “the walls keep tumbling down”
Wish i could experience the early 2010s again there was so many good music
This song really makes me think of the simpler times RIP simpler times 2016-2020 Those where the best years of my life so far
This just brings back memories and memories from when my part of Canada would get 4 foot of snow and now we're lucky to get 2 feet and snow at all, I want that snow back😢
This song is such a vibeee
This is one of those songs that make you feel sad for no reason.

People also cry because of how much the Pompeii victims went through and they feel bad for them.
Haven't heard this song for a long time and i used to listen to it and i guess i forgot about it sadly. Its veryy good and yesturday it just brought me back to never give up on what you want to do. :)
