Bassenthwaite Lake Station - Opening Summer 2021.

Join me for a return visit to Bassenthwaite Lake Station and The Orient Express. This fantastic project will open this summer at the northern end of Bassenthwaite Lake in Cumbria. It's over a year since I last paid a visit and the change is amazing. The reconstructed station building/new cafe is nearly complete and the train, which is a prop from the film Murder on the Orient Express, looks incredible. This will surely be one of the Lake District's most popular attractions.

Had no idea that this place existed! Nice to see that they've that prop locomotive and it's coaches. Really adds some interest to the station and makes it look busier! Good draw for visitors too.

The passenger carriage interiors definitely look wider than typical UK vehicles, but don't seem to be larger (or not by much) than the ones used in mainland Europe, many of which also have the straight sides mentioned. British railways had the smallest vehicles in Europe on the standard gauge, due to the size of tunnels and bridges, and the position of our high platforms.

That’s a good point. It is of course based on a European train, French loco I think? Thank you. 👍🏻

The film, like all previous dramatisations, makes the mistake that a French loco would not normally be seen outside France. While the CIWL carriages clearly travelled the whole route from Istambul to Paris, the action takes place entirely in the Balkans, where locos of the individual countries' railway systems would have been used, changed like horses at each border. In this part of the world at the time, many locos were derived from Austrian designs, due to the influence of the old Austro-Hungarian Empire. Perhaps something like one of these: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BB%C3%96_214

We've watched all your videos after coming across them last year when we were planning our visit to the lakes & found them really helpful. Will you be doing anymore this year as we're coming back again for a week in September? Have you done the Threlkeld walk in the new tunnel as we're thinking of doing this. Thanks

Thanks Caroline, I’m very pleased you found the videos helpful. Yes I have lots planned for over the summer. The Keswick to Threlkeld walk looks amazing and it is something I plan to do over the summer. Thank you again for watching. Paul. 😀
