I just switched from 45-105 Fenders to 45-100 Super Slinkies on my Stingray and the bass has sprung to life like never before. Lighter gauge lets you raise the pickup up higher without getting magnet warble above the 12th fret. Should have done this ages ago - it sounds like a Stingray again!

I've spent years playing standard gauge and now I've switched to a lighter gauge and it feels so much better, It has also forced me into playing with a lighter touch which has improved my technique.

Same. I prefer the sound of thicker strings, but my tiny fingers just can't handle it and I make mistakes. I'd rather play cleanly with slightly less tone than killer thick tone riddled with mistakes 🤣 how the instrument feels in your hands is the most important thing.

The past couple of years I've been playing StringJoy 30-40-60-80-100-130 (or 125) based on feel preference, but I seriously doubt I could guess gauge based solely on sound, especially with someone else playing. I may get a string or two correct, but definitely not 100% correct like CiCi did

Got 110's on my Rick, dual truss rod.. probably the only bass I have I trust to bare the tension of these, monster sound! but a real pig to play for more than a few songs but my J and P's are all 100 .. middle road, versatile neither too skinny or too thin, nor too phat or too weedy

I genuinely don't know of a single bassist who plays Ernie Ball. And personally I'd never be caught dead with them. EB's gauges are also weird AF. So used to 45-105. Or rather 45-65-85-105-130 as 5 strings are my weapons of choice. All that bitching aside.... Well done Cici and Dave on a fun little video and quite fine playing.

That intro was such a let down ha. Anyway, my go to set are 105 - 50. They are a nice blend of lightness and warmth. I do sometimes picking 105-45 string if available on certain basses. Can't say no to a set of 110 tho, beefy low-end with that warmth. Does give you a work out playing them for sure. Cici nailed the blindfold test very impressed. You can easily tell the lightest from the heaviest. The hardest ones I think are the middle two because they are very similar.

The bass itself is also an important factor here. For my Rickenbackers for example, playing half a step down to E Flat, I use 40-90 Rotosounds because they just sound the best on those basses. The low end sounds much tighter with the thinner strings, more present and fatter. Going with 100 or more on the low E just gets too muddy. For a Fender or a fat active bass, that would probably not be viable though.
