12:36 yeah so Geoff talked about this bassline in one of his q&a’s and cleared it up for us. So I believe he said he double tracked that part in 2 octaves. So he sang C#4-C#3 on top of C#3-C#2 and then Layne(who arranged this one) added some distortion effect that made it sound subharmonicy

This one really sticks out because it was the first time Geoff really stepped out of his shell and "acted" like a character. He really sold this performance which has lead to everything he has done solo and amped up Voiceplay's production.

Perhaps in Voiceplay. But he was theme park performer- he had characters as his job at a point. I can see some of that evolving into the acting part here.

Anyone can do a "reaction." It takes an educated person to offer analysis. Do what you do, as that is why I watch your videos. I watch The Charismatic Voice for the same reason - the insight and discussion of technique.

Geoff Castelluci is insanely talented, i love watching his solo work, dude even can edit, he's just one of those people who make you think "what CAN'T this guy do??" so happy i ever discovered Voiceplay and Geoff.

For the bass guitar sound, Geoff shared that it was a simple chest “dum dum” riff with distortion edit by Layne. Yes Geoff do also the background bass. The last E1 wasn’t written at first, but Layne asked Geoff for a more “drop the mic” ending during editing. Geoff also shared he was doing a standard subharmonic that has been done by editing where they enhance the bass and cancel most trebles.

I watched a number of reaction videos, and a lot of people don’t catch Geoff’s do-do-do-do-do riff. I know I didn’t catch it until someone in a comment section pointed it out with a time stamp. Another (non-singing) visual effect that’s really hard to catch (at least on a small phone screen) are the black snakes coming “out of Geoff’s mouth” when he sings snake and spider stew. It lasts for only a second or two.

Yeah, the ending Layne wrote was like some higher 2-octave note, B1, and then up to an E2, then after Geoff sent that track into Layne, he asked for a "bigger ending" and suggested he sing the E down the octave - which for Geoff at the time was quite difficult because I don't think he was as experienced in subharmonics as he is now, and subharmonics also weren't really a big thing back then so everyone went crazy over it. But yes, he did indeed drop the mic.

@@GrumpyOldFart2 I believe they were gummy snakes (at least I think, they looked like gummies) that he stuck in his mouth and let fall out while he was lipsyncing, same with the spiders that he held in his hand. IDK though.

This song was my first introduction to VoicePlay. What a way to start! And I've been addicted to them and Geoff's solo work ever since.

Geoff mentioned in one of his videos that in order to hit those high notes he adopts a voice reminiscent of a rock tenor

I love how you compliment at the end Geoff's moment with the B4 to E1 drop within a few words. It's generous as a fellow bass singer, and that shows class. Another such moment, where he does a D5 to D1 slide all in the same word, is in their _The Little Mermaid - MEDLEY (feat. Rachel Potter)._ about 4 minutes in, singing "Poor un-for-tunate SOULS (D5 to D1 slide). Now, just speaking technically, I didn't think it was possible to slide like that down into a sub, and there's some debate as to whether they layered a D2 over it, or the other way around (that he slid to a D2 and they layered a D1 over that). I've not seen anywhere he weighed in on it. Would love your analysis sometime, which I now have come to appreciate.

I believe the original slide was a D5-D2 and they added the D1, because even someone as experienced as Geoff probably wouldn't be able to slide from a very loud chesty mix up there all the way down and do a clean transition into a D1 subharmonic. But I haven't heard any confirmation, and since the D2 track has been isolated and removed for subharmonic compilations it might be a D5-D1 slide. Either way, a D5 and a D1 in a matter of seconds is *hella* impressive!

You should check out The Charismatic Voice - Tea Time with Geoff. She asks him a lot of these kinds of questions.

This video was my first impression of the group as it was the first time I heard of Voiceplays, and the first time I ever heard of Geoff (that note at the end is still so insane to me, along with his range). I'm glad you finally reacted to it.

So glad you finally made it to this one! Somehow my all time favorite!! 💖 Geoff explained that "bass guitar" as post-production Layne work, Geoff did a riff down and a riff up, and Layne put them on top of each other to create that effect. Makes sense? No idea, but it sounds awesome!! (it's in one of his sing low videos. Great analysis, thanks, Peter! 😍

I absolutely love it when you pull a song apar, you can do it every time. It gives me a new appreciation for what is being done in a song. I listen to a song and think its great and after you pulled it apart I have a new appreciation for the song.

Oogie boogie was the first Voiceplay video i watched & have been hooked ever since. They have become my favorite Acapella and group. I still love Home Free as well but PTX not so much since Avi left. The Bass Gang has slso become a favorite as well eagerly waiting on your next video. Yes I'm still here at the end i learn a lot everytime i watch your reactions. 😊❤️😊🎃👻

The e1 at about 14:00 was a lip bass by Layne.

This made my day. Seriously I was having a screaming bad day, then I saw this posted and it was instantly better.

Agree this is iconic. I think it set a lot of a capella bass on it's ear. You covered it well. I remember seeing Geoff, Kathy and a couple others at Universal, and a couple in person appearances in the beginning of Voiceplay and before. I always was impressed with the quality of his voice. Lots of folks can make the sounds, but making it sound as Geoff does is so fricking rare. Thanks for this analysis. I appreciate you taking the time to do it in depth.

"You're the mean one Mr Grinch" is one of the most balanced and best arranged song by Voiceplay and Geoff blasted on it . E1 chest fry ? Full subharmonic tho .

that little lick he does which sounds like a bass guitar he said was an edit of him singing in a higher octave then a lower octave which were combined together in the final cut.

in the section with the glowing teeth, geoff has said that it’s a growl B1, but layne made it more predominant in editing

Think the growl/sub thing was acc a lip buzz - Geoff did confirm that it was Layne and they’ve performed it live and Layne does a lip buzz.

Have soooooo been waiting for your reaction analysis on this song since I saw ur very first video. I am so glad you've done it. And I absolutely love how u really dug into it and dissected this for us and thank u for explaining in much depth about chest/growl and all the other pieces u explain out, I greatly appreciate it. This is by far my favorite song of theirs, this song is where my rabbit hole dive into bass Acapella started. I knew about Home Free bc I actually watched the show where they won but that's kind of where my bass Acapella stopped. after the Santa-Boogie interplay in the middle (I'm going to do my stuff) the entire key of the song jumps up a half step. Almost a Disney lift and my initial thought was they did it to allow Geoff some space to deliver that depth charge of a last note but after hearing some of the chats with Geoff and Layne, I'm not entirely sure of that. It sounds like they did it to move into the last part of the song and give it a big finish. The depth charge was just the cherry on top.

High notes are really hard even for some of us females also. :) I definitely think the low notes come easily for me, but I struggle in the upper ranges. I'm a low contralto... I can't even reach the upper end of what is generally agreed upon as the usual contralto higher end. My break is like one to two octaves below that, depending in if I'm in head voice or mixed voice. Also, that really low moment of Geoff's here. Around 14:01, I think it was. It was interesting to hear it NOT oscillate from ear to ear on your video. Every other time I've heard this piece - including on their own channel - that moment has always oscillated from ear to ear. Also, can we just take a moment to pat Santa on the back here? LOL. His EYES when Geoff flies up into that last final belt are absolutely PERFECT! That man clearly sank a lot into his facial expressions on this! It is SO hard to convey expression around all of the costume beard and hair, and he did it beautifully throughout the entire piece! Props to you for catching that riff down, too. Very few folks have noticed that riff, and it really fills out that space as well as it modulates them down. It's a cool sound, it really is. And as far as acapella and editing. It's acapella, NOT acoustic. I think people keep equating the two, and they really shouldn't. I expect some edits and edited effects on produced acapella. If I wanted raw/off-mic singing, I'd listen to acoustic pieces instead.

Do you mind if I ask what your range is notes-wise? I think I'm also a fairly low contralto (I actually sometimes sing bass in the choirs I'm in just because that's where my voice is most comfortable), but I've never met any others, so I have no conception for what a normal or functional range for the voice type is. ^^;

@@shakespearetrash1521 I just saw this response tonight. Sorry! My total range is F3 to about G4. (F3-A3 I have to work for and do it really early in the morning.) G4 is really the top top of my range, and i have to work really hard to make anything from D4-G4 sound good. G4 itself is almost impossible except in very rare cases for me, and really from D4 to G4 it's just not reliable for me. Many people consider F3 to F5 to be a contralto range, but I just cannot reach the 5th octave at all yet. I'm still working on expanding through the 4th octave. LOL My comfortable range (without having to work hard at it) is B3 to C4. I'm still working on trying to open up my upper range more, but I'm simply not there and my voice starts to get nasal and crack around D4. I do a lot of practicing to Lisa Gerrard or Diana Ankudinova as they are both contralto singers. Diana sometimes reaches higher notes than Lisa, so I practice along with her performances to work on my upper range, as I really only have about an octave right now that's reliable, and IMO it's too limited. I find Diana's pieces to be very challenging on the upper range for me, and Nina Simone is quite challenging at the bottom end of my range. So I practice to both of them quite often when I'm trying to work on those areas. Adele and Annie Lennox are two more Contralto singers (modern music). I practice to all of them, depending on what I'm doing. I also will practice to pieces performed by male tenors, as I find that their note ranges seem to match (although obviously as a female contralto, I do not have their timbre). Another thing that helps (for me at least), is to do tenor range vocal warm-ups. I find Jeff Rolka (he has a YT channel here) has multiple different tenor range warm-ups, and his are particularly helpful to me as he has a good pace, good amount of difficulty without being unreachable, and he just explains things very well. FWIW, some of the bass singer techniques can be applied in our range, as well. Your low reach is pretty much a matter of biology; you have what you have. But I still find that the bass techniques help with rounding out and warning my lower range also. I'll never reach their gorgeous basement notes. ;) But the particular technique still works in my range.

I know many many fans request this one to be reacted to, and I know why, I just feel it doesn't do justice to the wonderful voices and harmonies of the group, so I rarely request it. It's mostly a showcase of Geoff's abilities. Which is fine but I prefer to recommend their more harmonic numbers. I love it when Geoff becomes a bass guitar which he does so well.

Fun fact: when they sing this live, Layne does the E1 growl at 13:19

I'd say in the drop section that the bassline is done with the lip roll technique by layne. It's a vibration of 1 side of the lips that produces a low sound like an electronic bass.

I think one song that he did was an old cowboy song called giddy up it shows a lot of range and very clear

This song was my first introduction into Voiceplay. I suggest you look into them doing Friends on the Other Side, This is Halloween and then doing a Hillbilly vs Zombie collaboration with Home Free.

The other thing about the "you aren't comprehending, the position that you're in" bit, is that the backing chords are *identical* (i think) to the chords in the opening theme of "Batman: The Animated Series". ...I may have listened to this song a few too many times.

The only other real bass moment I consider in the same category as this would be Tim Foust in their live version of Ring of Fire during the Sing-off. Tim gets up there during that performance as well.

Great reaction Peter! It's like all the vocal coach reactions put together. I love that mask of yours too. It reminds me of Shao Kahn from Mortal Kombat! I like the explanation of the difference between a growl and a subharmonic. That helps me determine what I am doing when I sing in the 1st octave.
