    It’s so interesting learning even more of what’s going on with a VoicePlay cover, because there is A LOT! Your knowledge and breakdowns are equally impressive and you offer so much finer detail, i’m specifically impressed by how you analyse each line/instrument and the harmonic progression etc. Your face on 4:37 ahah, oh yes! Aren’t they so good😭 I too could continue talking about this group, so many elements to unpack. Keep on sharing!

    I'm not sure even Layne knows what he does at this point. He went out wandering the universe and came back with all this....The more I listen to him, the more I'm amazed. But that holds for everything they do, so... I did not grow up with music. Just what was on AM or my dad's Glenn Miller/Andrews Sisters. So this is such a new world, and I really appreciate how you and the Charismatic Voice explain and help me understand the levels and intricacies of what they do.

    I remember the original and following Aerosmith. His father was a classically trained musician (Julliard). In an interview long years ago I read that the chords and simple melody were a product of listening to his father practicing on the piano. What a great piece it continues to be -- truly classic in the rock world. Lyrics were, and are, wise thoughts written by a teenager of his time. Peter, I feel like you introduced me to an old friend musically that I now know with new appreciation. ColdPlay is amazing.

    Excuse me, good sir! How dare you, just pit viping only once! You should've been wearing them during the whole song! 🤣🤣Now seriously, Geoff dropped some impressive, long lows out there! Wow, I'm still shaking! 🔥🤯. I think the barbershop cadence is because there's no perc at the beginning, until Layne produces that weird, awesome post-apocalyptic helo sound, or whatever it is! This song has been one of my favorites for ages, and I was really curious to hear what VP would do with it, wondering how they were gonna start with perfection and make it even better, you know? But they managed to pull the VP mesmerizing feeling all along! The arrangement is such a wonderful, creative masterpiece, and their voices and harmonies are outta this world! Maybe they are aliens? 😉 I already listened to this so many times! Funny thing is it hits me as if it was the first time I heard it, over and over again! 😍💯 Geoff has a new solo that will probably go public later this week. It's amazing, you need to react to it!! I mean, please do? It's worth it!!

    You could go an hour, Peter, and I’d be there for it. I really enjoy your breakdowns. I’ve come to suspect that the reason VP’s videos are so often Geoff-centric is mostly a marketing thing: At the end of nearly every song the first thing reactors talk about is his bass. It’s so extraordinary that he’s become kind of the gateway drug for Voiceplay. Once you’re into them you realize how amazing everyone else is. I love the idea of TBG getting a social media person. I’ve been watching what’s happening with the Wellermen and I think their very aggressive social media blitzes before they released the last two songs raised a ton of interest. But mostly we need MORE SONGS from you guys!! Excellent analysis-and seeing a new one from you always makes my day!

    Yay, thanks for taking the time to make us an additional video! Insightful and informative analysis, as ever, and "morning energy" or not, the geeking out as you peeled apart the arrangement was fun to watch. 🙂 This was a really creative and skillful take on such an iconic song. (I was also pleased that the riffs never crossed the line into "too much," at least given the feel of the song, and neither did Geoff's bass--it was just enough.) I guess my one nitpick would be that, while I'm in awe of the high-tenor belting no matter what, those epic high notes felt a little too smooth and processed--a little bit of grit, and it would have been perfect. But otherwise, I loved how they put this together.

Amazing. *Side note, I'd totally watch an hour long video. Part 1, Part 2 those for sure!!!* All those riffs, so steady and powerful, sounds so great. Then the Bass drops! There is just SOOOOOOOO much to say about the techniques of this, Lane and Geoff just have that beat going so smooth and effortless and sounds so amazing! And then i love when YOUR mind is blown with the Lane magic and Dub dub dub! BASS BASS smooth! And yes we are waiting! And lmao, may the F be with us lol. And man those highs!!!! Awesome work by VoicePlay as always, always ready to see new stuff by them as they NEVER disappoint. I'm desperately curious about that pulsing sound effect that Layne makes that startled you so. This is actually the third song I've heard it in - he did a kind of one-note version in "Hoist the Colors," but in "Dragonborn Comes" he makes this exact same deep pulsing throb. I cannot IMAGINE how he's making that sound, but as an a capella group I do believe they would avoid a sound effect that needed much mechanical assistance. I understand adding reverb or simply increasing his volume as needed - but this is a really unique sound. Layne, Kevin and Adam (from the top tier a capella groups) are incredible beatboxers, and I don't want to think of the carnage should any of the three ever decide to walk away.

    I always enjoy your deep analysis of Voiceplay and Geoff. On those very highest notes from the Eli, Cesar, Omar trio - I think that Eli and Omar were on the highest note with Cesar doing the harmony. Another reactor thought that because Omar and Cesar were doing similar physical action, that they were singing the same note. The more I watch it, though, the more I think rock star Eli did it. Thanx for reacting to this! And Geoff will have another solo on KZread in a few days. Subscribed.

    They did a short for viewers to karaoke and do the highest note with them, and they stripped out the highest voice - in that, it sounds (to my unprofessional ear aha) like Eli singing a lower melody, then Omar, with Cesar missing which means he would’ve been on the top?? It’s so hard to pick…

  • @janetdw

    @janetdw

    I agree. Cesar and Omar are more in tune physically but Eli can hit those high notes much more easily. And in spite of the lack of the metal scream which would not have worked well with Omar’s pure tones, as much as I would’ve loved to of heard it, it’s still had that feeling of Eli. That rock feeling.

  • @Honey_Beef

    To me, it was almost quite obvious that Eli was on the lower harmony on that part, then I'm pretty sure it's Omar on top and Cesar in the middle? If so, it's very interesting because in between Eli (tenor 2 when Earl was here, but obviously has tenor 1 capabilities) and Cesar, it's the baritone singing the high E5-F5 stuff. Not sure about the latter two though, there could also be some stacking going on where one sings two notes and another sings none. One of the reasons why I thought that is if we go a bit back (2:37 in the original), it's obvious from mouth movement that it's Cesar singing the melody/middle part, which leaves Omar and Eli on the top and bottom. Then, listening to the bottom part more carefully, it has a more "Eli quality" in that almost-baritone range, and if you really look at the brief Omar shot (2:39 in the original), the mouth movement also matches the high part (with the Eb4 Dream | F4 On). To conclude, before the ultra-belt part, it's obviously Omar-Cesar-Eli. Now, to go to the actual belting part itself. For me, the low part (I'm calling a part with C5 a "low part" lol) just sounded very Eli, and from 2:49 onwards it just sounds straight up obvious. The Bb4-C5 movement just sounds so Eli, neither Omar nor Cesar would sound like that in that range - they would probably both sound a bit more "heady" (probably not a right word but I can't find a better one, so we're sticking with that). I think at this point, we should probably just ask VoicePlay themselves and have them answer us lol

    I always enjoy Peter's very granular analyses of the contrasting harmonic lines and unconventional scales that VP uses in its covers. I very much appreciate his technical knowledge, not only about the voice and its intricacies, but also about the musicality of the performers and how they create the "magic" of their performances. Based on Peter's comments about this video, I am curious for a behind-the-scenes view of what the other members of VP think about Geoff and the major role he plays in many of the VP videos. Do they feel that he is show-boating to the detriment of the music as Peter believes? Is Geoff advancing his own performance to the detriment of the wonderful performances that his VP colleagues deliver? That seems to be the critical question here. Based on what I've seen of Geoff in various situations, he doesn't appear to be an egoist who promotes himself at others' expense. Perhaps Peter has more insight into this than ordinary fans?

    Just one person's opinion, but based on how most of Geoff's bigger spotlight moments come in songs that Layne arranges (or in "Enemy", which is arranged by both Layne and Eli), I'd say they're just having fun with it and not bothered. If I had to guess, I'd say they're probably pretty pragmatic about it. They know Geoff gets people talking and at the end of the day they're making their living on YT and talk = views. I'm a patron of both Geoff and VP and have to say that I've never seen even a whiff of ego from any of them. Also, Geoff gets a lot of notice for his solos, but I wonder if that's because bass is still such an extreme thing to hear (when it's not just in the background holding down the foundation). VP is kind of unique for arranging songs so all of the singers get a spotlight moment - people just talk more about Geoff, I guess. I wonder if you compared solo time for all of the singers if it'd actually seem like Geoff had more of a spotlight than the others.

    @@dancingtotheoffbeat2682 What you're saying ... that VP is making a pragmatic choice to highlight Geoff because of magnetism of his voice ... seems quite plausible to me. When I introduce someone to VP, the first comment they usually make is about Geoff and his unbelievable tones. I too am a patron of both VP and Geoff. For sure, they're my favorite acapella group. Geoff is my favorite bass but I have to say the baritone/bass who sings with Forestella may soon be giving him some competition.
