Bass Shootout: Precision vs Jazz vs 4001 vs StingRay
Музыка
All basses recorded with Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 directly to DAW with minimal processing, in order to keep the tonal characteristics of each bass intact. Special thanks to Stefanos Sakellariou for the beats.

Agree with you! The JB is great espacially with effect, if you are a pedalboard bassiste like me, the Jazz is a swiss knife. Pb51 with neck pickup, Jaco with bridge only, both on got a full midrage sound unique to Jb. The tone on the Fender are the key, can dial different caracter. I used to put all knob up, but I discover that bass got multiple personnality. The Gibson Thunderbird with a pic is something to try. All great bass. Nice video

As someone who plays a 73 Rick 4001, my bias has to go to the 4001. I just love that tone.
It's like if the Stingray was talking all articulated and crystal clear. How I love that bass!

Cool idea for a "shootout" video. They all sounded great, but best overall IMO is the Precision Bass because it just sits so well in the mix.
Nice playing, and great job covering ALL styles. That's what we like to see.
With a pick, that Fender Precision '75 had a godly tone!
All have their place in music but for me personally: 1). Precision: Best of all worlds, finger, pick & slap. Sits well in the mix best overall. 2).Jazz Bass: Similar to the Precision where it can work for all but excels at Finger & Slap bass very well! 3).Rickenbacker: Great fun bass, awesome look but to me only excels in the pick player over the others. While not bad with finger style it lacks the low end of the others & slapping on it tone wise is better on the others. 4). Musicman Stingray: POWERFUL sound. Excels at finger style and owns the slap (jazz not far behind it). I do not like the pick tone from them though personally. In the end. All great basses to cover every style of play & genre. But if I had to pick one, the Precision wins for me personally with my playing. Great video!

Well yes the jazz is of course his creation as well. But I think the p bass and music man were the two big ones for him, the p started it all and the music man showed that he was a fountain of ideas and knew how to make soild instruments that constantly pushed the boundaries of what a bass could do or "be" for lack of a better phrase.

Nothing better than a Rick, Stingray or Jazz on certain songs and styles while the P gets a great or serviceable tone on nearly everything, fits in most mixes like magic.

4 great basses, 3 awesome riffs/styles, 1 amazing player. Love that the Squier 70’s Vintage Mod J held its own with the rest of them. I have the same bass , V string version with stock pickups and to my ears it sounds pretty good in any style . I’ve always loved the look and sound of the Rick but have never actually played one. To me it sounded best here played with a pick. Didn’t care much for the Stingray sound in this video although they are great basses, especially for slap. P is just the iconic workhorse and sounded great with both pick and fingers. Very cool video!!!

Amazing comparison
I'm not sure if this is one of the videos before that made me decide to pick up a Jazz. Love it. Fantastic bass.
really helpful comparison! thanks :)
a bass for every mood, they're all great instruments!
P: "Standard-y" Jazz: Twangy Rickenbacker: Trebly Music Man: Nasally I've always thought of the Rickenbacker as a niche bass and the other three as must-haves. I really like the MM, but it's not great for everything. The P-bass is probably the most versatile of the four.
Nice comparison. My favorite 2 Basses: Jazz & Stingray. I love em both. Someone needs to make a 32" Med Scale Jazz Bass !!! Enjoyed your video. oNe LovE from NYC
Jazz bass for me. That tight clear sound is the one. All are great when played well as here. Thanks
Damn, the stingray is totally love it or hate it! (I love it and own one, btw!) Thanks for the film, excellent comparison, slick playing - cheers! Personally, I think the Jazz sounds awesome, but I so much prefer playing a Precision I'd never go for one. I think the Ricky sounds best when distorted, love it all clattery and growling.

They all sound good to me. Surprised how good sounding the Rick was. I've owned the other 3 kinds. Four flavours of goodness.
that precision is perfect im searching for exacly same one. Huge fan of natural color of wood
Ideally, I'd have all 4. Right now I'm favoring my Precision. Debating a Jazz or Stingray. Had a Ric just like that MANY years ago and would love one again mostly for nostalgia.
Dang I wish I had that stingray it is so cool. It is also one of my favourites so you can say it is my dream bass.

Great vid, no nonsense
Great shootout vid, no talking just straight up good examples. From what I heard: The stingray had the most extreme low end and high end which would really make it be audible anywhere and a tone I would call "beady" sounding but thicc, the P bass just has that classic cool rock sound that we all know and love and with the pick it gives it a whole nother level of vintage tone, the J bass was like a P bass but obviously jazzy/funkier and the obvious choice for slappa de bass, and the rick was very midrangy- making it very audible in mixes and also a choice of both Paul McCartney and Cliff Burton need I say more. NOT THAT you can't play any style with literally anything, love what you have, play whatever you want with whatever you want- that's uniqueness.
Cool bass lines!
Nice! Display of tones and classic basses. Well played FoniaS. Guys it would be silly for us to compare them with each other. Cos in the hands of different players playing different styles and players techniques they all get their time in the low end light on stage or in the studio. Ive played different styles from rock, country, funk, rnb, reggae, dub, pop & electro. Live and studio. I have a favoured pull to Musicman and Jazz basses as I like to snap, pop and slap. also those 2 basses were played by gun bassists I liked, But reggae although I dont own one... a fender p bass would be the one. Im not a fan of Rickys but heard on particular rock feels and pick playing they sound great for them tones. Its having an appreciation for them and what they can do used right in various applications. I own 5 basses and if I could afford more would own various others lol
They all sound great and have their own unique characteristics. For me: Finger - really love all of them Pick - Precision because it's just so crunchy/growly, no sound like that Slap - Jazz (almost like it's meant to be) or MM Over favorite is the Stingray
Thanks, finally I get it. My guitar players ears tend to like the more mid-focused tones of the P-Bass and Rick. The Jazz Bass sounds amazing on the slapping side of things though.
Nicely stringed.
Great video. Excellent playing. Thank you. FYI - for my style - I'd take that Ric all day.
Imagine combining a Rickenbacker pickup with a Music Man humbucker. Instant eargasm along with a mean tone to boot!
pick really wakes that J up I had a 4001 because of icon status, never could do much with it and sold within a year.
Sick ass riffs, bro!! I like different instruments depending on the style. Fingers = P, slap = J, pick = tossup between Stingray and Rick. That Rick looks crazy funky, too.
This is how all videos should be done. Same riff and same basic settings to compare. Awesome job. To me there’s nothing that matches a good jazz bass sound, especially for slap. Here’s how I rated them: Jazz > Pbass > Ric > MM
Wow man you got some awesome freekin basses!

Love them all. The Stingray is Punchy but the P-Bass has it all. I do not have a Rick and sold the Jazz Bass.
very nice!!
The Rickenbacker seems to only be using the bridge (treble) pickup. It sounds a lot better when the neck pickup is in there.
Excellent job making this video. Really well done! I'm guessing the Jazz is the non-authentic vintage. I don't remember seeing the black block markers back in that era (though they may have made them but I only remember the pearl ones) and I also don't remember that era of Jazz Basses sounding this good :) Sounds like you have better than stock pickups in there.

Thanks man. The Jazz is actually a Squier Vintage Modified model with a 70s decal and a new paint job. PUs are not stock either, but I am not sure of their make..probably old Seymour Duncan
Surprised of the amount of growl the rick has but overall it's a battle between the stingray and the jazz those tones got me into bass and yet can't decide luckily I own a sterling and an overwater jazz bass so I don't have to lol
very good souning basses especially liked the P and J basses along the Music Man 78,the Rickenbacker didnt thick the box for me.
Great vid!anyway you have to play that jazz bass fingerstyle with only the bridge pickup, that is why the jazz bass wins and it really shines.
Never like Rics until I heard this ‘74. Wow!
Sick video! I just subbed! I have some bass videos as well! Glad there are others helping spread the awesome sounds of different basses around!
Hi, what pups are installed on the precision 75?
great shootout and playing. stingray wasn’t dialed in, and was much lower in volume than the others tho
I want a 78 stingray so darn bad!!! Just like that the natural with maple 🤤🤤🤤
Awesome
I cannot help, ok it's a kind of taste but... This crispy sharp "Zing-Za-Zing-Zing" - that's so pure Music Man, i adore it. I'm a big P-Bass fan but I need a Sting. The sound is just killer.
Ok, you helped me choose.... buy all four...
All the of them are great basses hard to say who wins the shootout though because all have been used in everything from funk to R&B. I have a few Musicman basses, a jazz bass and a P. When I gig I always walk with my Jazz Bass and seconds would be either a MM or a P😀
It has a LOT to do with which pickup he's playing over, which pickups are turned on (or off) and what the tone control is set at. The Ricky on finger playing was played over the back pickup which will make it sound brighter.
P bass is my bass of choice. All of them are pretty versatile
Rickenbacker's look and Fender Jazz's sound, perfect combination!!
