Clever and well done schtick! But, Mr. Schatz is much more than this! Mark Schatz; YOU are one of the finest bass players in America. I have enjoyed you on many records for years. I encourage you to write and make more of your own records. Eg., I think Jay Leonhart's best works are his solo records. I will buy your solo records. Mark, your work on John Hartford's 1999 "Good Old Boys" was exceptional. You made it sound easy to back John when he broke off and told that long story about Bill Monroe. When John stopped 'rapping' and started playing back on the on the one, you were right there, as you had been subtly keeping time and the arrangement throughout John's long and beautiful story. That album really grows on you (it has legs) and you played a major role in bringing it all together. -All of you guys supported John wonderfully and with great artistic and human sensitivity during a period when he may not have been feeling so well. You guys were great on that record and during the live shows you played with him (MerleFest) -Bless you, for your great talent and your efforts. I am a great lover of good bass playing. I grew up a couple of blocks from the Harfords. John was about 13 years older than me, so the only relationship I was able to have with him was one of idolatry. When he came out with Aereo • Plain, it completely changed my way of thinking about music! My buddies and I all loved anything John did and he made us appreciate our river heritage all the more. i had read most of Twain by the time I was 18. The mud remain in my blood. BASS is my favourite instrument. (NOT fender bass!!. Any dern fool can play fender bass; -e.g., I am a dern fool. Next comes The Mighty Hammond, then comes the pedal steel (Speedy West, Alvino Rey, Buddy Emmons, etc.), then the cello, the Eire Harp, Mandolin, Mando Cello; -just about every instrument that I DON'T play. The Earth does NOT have enough BASS players. And I aint talkin' 'bout no fender bass! SOOOOO, you kids out there, take a lesson from Mr. Mark Schatz and learn to play BASS. -NOT, fender bass , not guitar, not even drums. If you learn to play bass, can bow and SITE READ (get a conservatory education), you will always have more good work than you can accept, have good health care and benefits, and you will live a wonderful life. PLAY BASS! There will never be a digital string bass player that can truly mimic a Mark Schatz or a Lyle Ritz, Ray Brown, Judge, Slam Stewart, Jay Leonhart, Red Callender, Junior Huskey, Roy Huskey, Jr. , Jimmy Blanton, Billy Taylor, Wellman Braund, Pops Foster, Too Slim, Bill Black, etc. The list is long over the years, but, today there are fewer REAL bass players out there. There is a great shortage of bass players! (Also a shortage of good instruments, so luthiers, please start making good basses for reasonable prices. I suspect that an excellent bass might be made using ovation's guitar technology. The solid carved spruce top is the most important sound producer. The back and sides are like a speaker cabinet. if young people could find reasonably priced playable basses, I think we would have more bass players instead of WAY TOO MANY HALF-ARSED GUITAR PLAYERS. Guitar is an easy instrument to comp your self simply on simple pop tunes at home; but, guitar as difficult to reach a professional level as any instrument. You might as well play bass -better jobs.
