Bass Compression Tutorial - Using Ableton ONLY Plugins
The bass compression settings used in this tutorial are a general guide for compressing bass. Typically you use a higher ratio of compression on sub frequencies to control and get them to sit in the mix. When it comes to setting the ratio for the mid range and upper frequencies, you need to use your ears to gauge the correct balance between control and dynamics. A higher ratio will give harder compression but crush your dynamic range. It's a great balancing act! Similarly with the attack and release settings.

This is literally the best detailed eq & compression bass video I've ever seen. Good lookin! Wish I could send u some of my mixes so u can bless them with your talent!
I watch a lot of videos on music production. You do an excellent job explaining concepts, even when compared to some of the bigger channels. Keep it up, there is something very down-to-earth about your style that just flows.

Aww thank you so much. That really means a lot. So grateful for the specific feedback on my style. Thank you for taking the time to comment that, it motivates me to keep going.
The fact that you explain in detail WHY you're doing what you're doing is really helpful. Some videos just tell you to copy their exact settings, which of course would vary depending on the situation and sound. This is probably the best youtube tutorial I've ever seen, because its not just a tutorial but a valuable resource for knowledge on compression. Thank you for making this free 🙏
Oh and to explain TRANSIENT AND DECAY, uhh....think about a piano key, when its struck, its loud and slowly fading, the louder part( Transient) and fading part you can barely hear (Decay). so basically compression brings those together so you'll hear both clearly

I switch it to mono. I throw utility plugin on, eq8, compressor, saturation, limiter at final mastering. Compression is basically the difference between the louder and quiet part of the signal getting in. So how much you compress will depend on several factors, firstly its going to be the sound entering the compressor, the actual effect you are trying to create and personal preference/taste. So basically what you need to remember about compression is that you'll need to crush the transient part and boost the decay part so that both the transient and decay gets clarity, so basicaly bringing low and high signals together to be able to hear low signals better. I like the sausage term, lol good way to explain it.

Thank You very very much for this brillant video...! 👌 I`ve seen quite a mass of compression vids, but Your one is absolutly the best...brillant...! After doing the bass Compression like this I tried to do the same with the other grouped Instrumenttracks (Pads, Leads, Distortion). Maybe You"d like to make some seperate videos about Compression of Pads, Leads etc. and which groups should be compressed together..... Many Thanks and all the best from Cologne, Germany! 🍀🌞💫 🎼🎵🎹🎧🎶🔌

Have you done a video on that neutron in the back I’d love to see a video on some basses with that and how to process things from ananlog synths
For years I've been struggling to add bass to my pre-programmed tracks using a midi-keyboard and a bass sound in Ableton. I've found it much easier to use a real bass guitar to perform the same task.

Real bass will always sound nice on a track. The humanisation performance element and noise floor are taxing to replicate in a synthesised bass.

This is exactly what I have been lacking? the thickness in my sausage? 😕 that came out wrong, Sorry. Also is it possible to parallel compress a finished beat? Thanks Becky love your content btw

nice tuto , thank , is paralel comp another technic or in additional to the first ? .

Totally up to the user's choice. It depends what sounds good. Generally I used them all together to some degree. There's no hard rule to say that you must use all of them together.

what’s the difference between compression this way and using the multi band with similar settings?
@BeckySaifMusic
Жыл бұрын
None! It just means that you can isolate the bands further for individual processing on the band 😜
What the actual ffffff... how do you not have 100 times more subs?! Best kept secret on YT. FYI I'm really bad at keeping secrets... 😁

Is there a difference of using the rack or the Multiband Dynamics for Multiband Compression?
@BeckySaifMusic
2 жыл бұрын
Nope 😉 well the MB dynamics gives you the option to do downward compression as well.
Hey Becky, thank you so much for this tutorial. I do have a question that I can't wrap my head around and really hope you can help me out. I've tried substituting this approach for the built in Ableton Compressor, and have replicated my original Multiband Compressor's settings into your rack. My goal is to just have more control over each frequency band. My problem is, though I've replicated my old Multiband Compressor into your rack perfectly, my overall bass sound is different. I can't seem to find how to make it sound the same. Any ideas? Are there any things that this approach does to the sound that may change the signal in an unwanted way? Any response would be so appreciated! Thank you again!
@pro-vide519

late response but a multi band compressor is the same as the rack she built but your essentially getting more control with the rack as u can add additional effects to each band. I would only use a multi band compressor if you was using a complete separate sub bass on a different Channel. btw I'm sot sure I'm totally correct but that would be logical to me since the rack is essentially a better version of a multi band compressor.
Not sure how to open the compressor.. Just opens a Terminal on my mac and can't drop into ableton.. :/

Oh no, I don't know how to help here. I've been a pc user for a while now and not had this problem previously on my mac.
Would you use this same technique for recorded electric bass?
@BeckySaifMusic
2 жыл бұрын
Yes I would use a combination of the techniques mentioned in this video. It does solely depend on the functionality of your bass and the genre though. With electric bass in genres like Jazz, you're looking for a lot more dynamic fluidity with your bass but then if you're compressing for rock genres, you might want a thick parallel compression to beef it up. In theory though, yes. Just ensure you remove any unwanted recorded noise from the noise floor, otherwise it could be amplified when you add any makeup gain. You're likely to have more noise from a recorded bass.
I don't know what I'm doing wrong but when I split the bass two low mid and high I get a completely different sounding bass. Why is that happening?
