It is quite a journey to be a musician, it has taken me too long to understand. Very glad to come across this amazing interview. I've heard about Chuck Rainey for years, this is the first time I have been able to hear him speak, I feel very blessed and fortunate.

I remember learning Kid Charlemagne from Guitar Pro tab. I played all the right notes and in time and it sounded nothing like Chuck. He has a unique quality to the feel of his bass playing. Many have tried but few have succeeded to emulate him 😎

Jeff Porcaro held Chuck to THE standard...nuff said! Chuck and Lee...just those two cats can make a cross country drive fill your music needs...and you will only hear 10% of what they played on!

If you asked me what the best bass album is... ...without hesitation, II would say it was Chuck's playing on Steely Dan's Aja.

Chuck Rainey, wassup? Do you remember "Marvin (and his wife Khine-khine, and daughter Myanno) f. Alrom Japan?" I saw you in Japan maybe more than a few times. . . remember when I picked you up and we went over to Paul Jacksons (R.I.P.) house? Also, I have a photo that shows you (and me and my family) out to dinner at a yakitori bar in Shibuya! I ain't never forgot the good times we had. Myanno is now a Junior at Northwestern University outside Chicago. She's majoring in "international diplomacy." Khine-khine just wanted to use me to get intoThe US, (she says . . . the story is long and complicated . . . I'm in SanFrancisco . . . check me out if you have time. I'm retired! (plenty more to say.)

It´s because he feels bass all the time! And that means soloing does not make much sense to his musicality! Which I understand very much. But his strength is to create real bass lines - and many of todays soloists are only good playing "without music", on their own! Chuck is not used to flash about, but listen to his recordings - a genious!
