    Totally agree with the knife recommendation, RAT 5 or 4 are freaking awesome. Took the RAT 5 to a survival course and it out preformed 90% of the knives other guys brought. A very good presentation. I was a dealer, own multiples of what you reviewed. Skills count for a lot. Ditto on having a sheath that works - the ones with the most options are spec-ops because the plastic insert can be molded to the knife. My greatest challenge was selecting one for my 30 something son who has no skills. I chose the Ontario TFI that he could put in his car as he is on the road daily. The Moras are fine because the probability of having to chop down a tree is and should be remote. The sheath allows a tremendous number of modifications. They also make great trading goods when shtf.

    Solid advice. although; Mora garberg is a fulltang, somewhat thicker blade. So there are other mora options available. And another thing; I agree about the 1095. I make custom knives, and it's a really easy steel to work, and is easy to heat treat., and it's easy to maintain afterwards.

    If you're going to be doing much wood chopping/field craft I recommend trying a poll hawk in conjunction with a thinner fixed blade knife. The hawk gives you the capability of an axe and hammer without adding much weight. It allows you to chop more efficiently and is great for large game processing. It also saves wear and tear on your knife which you can save for more delicate tasks. The hawk fits nicely on the outside of an assault pack. H&B forge makes a nice one for under $100. It's the best tool I've ever taken to the field.

    I own a morakniv. Combined with a folding saw it processes a lot of wood. Been in the military, Cold War USAF Sgt, and the outdoors 5 decades. I've come to really appreciate the Cold Steel Kukri machete for many tasks over the last 3 years. Granted it won't fit on a chest rig. I also own a hand forged Hudson Bay knife with a clip point. I have a hatchet and canoe axe. I've used many tools to do specific tasks. I would not want to rely on one blade. But, if I had to pick one blade, the Kukri machete would be it. If restricted to only a knife then the custom Hudson Bay knife. Modern reproduction Bay knives have a short handle, something to be mindful of. I did have to cushion the handle on the Kukri. The two other mods was to scandi the edge by the handle, and add an across the back of the hand paracord loop to improve efficiency and safety. At a pound and a half and it's compact size I have no trouble packing it along. I use it on my scout pack. On my ALICE camping pack I run a folding saw and Mora. From the French and Indian War up to the 20 th century, most fieldcraft was done with a pocket knife and hatchet. One knife to rule them all is asking a lot. Definitely a modern concept. I've been reenacting F&I and Rev War for years, and did some Seminole Wars as well. Large knives were used for combat in conjunction with a hatchet or tomahawk. I liked the review. Like seeing what works for someone else.

    Good to see you favor shorter blades. This fixation on survival knives with 7"+ blades is laughable; anything much over 5 inches becomes awkward for general use. You're right about 1095 steel - it's been a good choice for outdoor knives for a couple of generations.

  • @dennisleighton2812

    @dennisleighton2812

    2 жыл бұрын

    Shawn, I don't think a knife with a 7+ inch blade is intended for "general use", whatever one understands by that. It is a tool for specific uses - chopping, felling, lumber dressing, heavy camp tasks. Trying to do eg, feathering, with it is a little silly. For that you use a knife intended for that purpose, like a 4 inch or so Scandi grind knife, which basically has a single, or very limited use. Neither of these knives are particularly good in the carcass-dressing dept or other food preparation. For that you ideally use a thin flat ground blade that slices meat thinly and neatly with minimal effort. Lastly for those little fine, fiddly tasks that don't require much power, one could go to a small (3") paring knife that doesn't need to be robust, but has a keen edge, like a Victorinox paring knife. Now, many people search fruitlessly for the Holy Grail of knives - one that can do ALL these tasks effortlessly and best! They will, unfortunately, continue in their search for the rest of their days, as such a thing just does not exist. The only way to move forward is to identify your number one priority, and find a knife that does that the best. After that, if it can do some of the others quite well that is a bonus. It's a matter of adapting what you have to what you need it to do. The other alternative is to come to terms with carrying a touch more weight and getting better equipment, ie more than one knife. I hope you see where this is going.

    A good survival knife on a budget I'd recommend the Old Hickory Butcher Knife, they come in either 7" or 10" length, made of 1095 steel, 90 degree spine, and fits in Kabar sheaths. Only con, for me, is that it's 1/8" thick and some may not like the profile of tip and edge grind(double scandi'ish)but for 16-18$ for the knife alone, it makes for a good knife and it also allows for a knife that can be ground down to the tip profile of choice(slow belt sander and constant checking for heat) allows for a cheap solution that can be modified.

    Couple of thoughts. I always take Mora knives on trips with me. GREAT trade items or gifts for folk that help you out, and at less than $20, you are getting a huge amount of quality. Just don't lay into it too hard on batonning. My go-to survival knife is the Enzo Trapper - green micarta scales, scandi grind. IMO the best expedition bushcraft knife for the money (around $150). Made in Finland like everything else fine in life. I use their carbon steel in the USA and their stainless on the coast in the tropics. Biggest mistake you can make is to get a large chopping survival knife. I got an Esse Junglas as I thought i could get a machete and a bushcraft knife in one package. Using it all day on the trial as a machete will destroy your wrists, and trying to use it for fine camp work will take the tips of your fingers off as it's hard to control. You really do need both tools in the end. The best machetes out there can be got in the tropics for $10. Light and easy to use on vines and thorny veg all day long. Sharpen the crap out of them with a metal file. Handles will fail you so I have put micarta on my favorites.

    I have about 100 mora knifes, Ive never broken one at the tang. The old ones are pretty soft so you can bend them, they don't brake at all. The never ones you kan brake, and I have broken some, but it's always the blade itself that brake. If you use it for bending then get the one that has a thicker blade. That one is very hard to brake.

Supersharp and slim, but the thinn thickness towards the end of the blade is pretty easy to break when doing rougher stuff with it (like chopping wood). Bought a Fällkniven F1 after that, now that's nukeproof. Would probably go for a S1 or SRK if I were to buy one now.

    Nice summary on what works

  • @thomasjefferson1457
    @thomasjefferson14576 жыл бұрын

    Knife definitions: Survival knife: A knife you have on you when the need unexpectedly arrives. Bushcraft Knife: A “camp knife” suitable for camp chores such as building a shelter, making a feather stick, fixing a meal or light chopping of firewood. Tactical knife: A knife capable of use as a weapon to defend yourself in case of attack of either animal or human. Pocket knife: A knife you would normally carry in your pocket in a casual way every day. (This knife sometimes becomes your survival knife.) The ideal survival knife is hardly the one you're going to have on you when the need arrives. If you're out hiking and happen to get lost and you have your “stuff” with you then you're in luck. You have the perfect situation just like it was planned, but it's usually not that way in the real world.

    Thomas Jefferson well that is why some of us have a rucksack that has a few extra items in it for the 'just in case' situation. Of course in our life we are unlikely to ever need a knife in a survival situation, but it's better to be prepared than to not. For example I've been robbed when I was 16 years old. If I had a knife on me, being outnumbered would not be as much of an issue.
