A Cornelius, or Corny or Soda, keg is the ideal keg to use for homebrewers looking to achieve draught beer at home. Corny kegs are typically 5 gallons in size, versus the much larger commercial kegs, but also come is other sizes, such as 3 gallons. In this installment of the Basics of Home Brewing series, I show you all the pieces of a 5 gallon Cornelius keg, and briefly discuss what each piece is for. I also give a quick walkthrough of how a keg actually works and a couple of tips if you're new at kegging your homebrew.

This is the only video on KZread that actually explains the parts of a keg and how it works.
How is this video 10 years old and looks this good? Obviously someone had mad skills back in the day!
I've been bottling for three years and am about to start my first keg. This was a well-done video to help me get started. Thank, man!

Master Terpsichoreankid Beer God, You are my idol! Thank you very much for all of your clips posted on KZread man!!!
Great video as always. And you can unscrew the pressure relief valve for cleaning. I clean my kegs outdoors. Got a bicycle type pump and picnic serving spigot. Scrub them out clean with detergent & water, seal 'em, pump 'em up with air and run it out the tap, cleaning the OUT tube. In the mean time, I take one keg indoors and clean out my beer line on the kegerator. Both a wash and a rinse for everything. Cheers, keep up the great vids!!
@steeljan Ah yes--very true! Good call--I actually completely forgot that you could take it off too. I was careful to blow some sanitizer out through the relief valve too--to make sure it was nice and sanitized as well. Thanks for the kind words, and great advice!
Great video! It's nice to know how a keg is made and work.
Thanks, interesting intro into the world of corny kegs
@TheThornton33 One thing too--since I moved the cooling tray around, I've noticed the fridge is much colder than it should be. Right now it is sitting at 1.5 and the temperature inside is about 38 degrees F. So if you were to want to do a controlled ferment at, say, 68 or so, it might be better to use an external temperature controller, similar to the rigs with a chest freezer.
Well explained in layman's terms, Cheers thanks for sharing, David,

cheshirehomebrew Happy to help! Cheers!
@MrGabesutube Awesome! The guy we got all my latest equipment from has a HUGE hop vine in his back yard, and since he is giving up brewing, he wasn't sure what to do with it. I told him to keep watering it, and I would be back come harvest time! :-)
thanks for the info. nice vid
@TakeSomeAdvice I hadn't really looked around actually... Very cool!
@TheThornton33 I've actually got a 'secret brew' I did sitting in one right now and am in the process of figuring out how NOT to pour a glass full of foam... LOL And yes--the fridge (this one, anyway) will fit a 5 gallon carboy in with no problem at all. If I were to try to get a 6.5 gallon one in there, I think I would need to remove a little foam from the door--but it would be pretty nominal. Cheers!
@bmeyer44 Thanks! I actually use a Canon PowerShot camera on the video mode, and edit everything in iMovie. It's a pretty cheap setup--but it works great for me!
Great video. One of my kegs has a leak at the main opening. Even with a new o-ring the the thing leaks no matter how I position it. Anything I can do to fix it? It already drained a CO2 tank once....
What kind of thread is on the in and output ports ?
That's a tricky one... Are you using keg lube? If so, do you notice a problem after using a lot or a little keg lube? Sometimes the lids can have damage, in which you'd need to get a replacement (send me a message via BIY Homebrew Supply's website (my shop) and I can custom order you one), but also check the rim to see if it is damaged. If the actual keg rim is messed up, I'd scrap the keg and use it's parts to fix other kegs.
@musicshapedhole Very cool! I want to be part of that secret santa! LOL Great score--kegging is awesome. I just did a video on how to prepare your keg for beer/soda/etc.--so definitely give it a look! Cheers!
@greenvalet Thank you! Cheers!
Awesome video! I see you have, if I'm not mistaken, a Firestone Challenger keg, right? Question: do the gaskets have to be "bonnet", or can they be the regular cylindrical ones? Cheers!

+Noloc Drums Thank you! I can't even remember what type keg I used in this video. I have so many now, and most of them are your standard Cornelius keg. I do believe this is a Firestone, and I have since added a Corny type B as well to the mixup. Which gaskets are you talking about? All of our part kits have standard rounded edge gaskets, so if that answers it, there ya go!
Dude, did you already brew a batch just for the keg? On another note, I'm interested to see whether your modified mini fridge would be large enough to house a glass carboy for temp control...?
That would do the trick!
Are the poppets interchangeble?
@kidman199 Thanks Matt!
@gol8kers88 Yep!
Corny kegs are made of stainless steel--so they don't react to any widely available cleansers and sanitizers (same ones used by commercial breweries and wineries)...

@W1F3B34T3R Thanks!
Hahaha--thanks!
Yeah right--very funny--using sugar as a sanitizer! Industry standard is iodine based sanitizers. Stainless steel is also the standard--so as long as you have those two, you're fine.
Ironically Keg-Lube is a petroleum byproduct.
Do Shaggy and Velma have a son together?
LOL
I liked the video a lot, it was very informative, but I hate your haircut. This might sound mean, but I'm doing you a favor. You look like you have a bowl cut that ate all of the other bowl cuts, and has become a monstrous bowl cut. Still giving you a thumbs up though.
