Basic Solo Camping Xterra. Rig Walkaround #1

Here is my 2008 Xterra Offroad. I show my suspension modifications, simple sleep setup, storage solutions and film equipment. It doesn't take much to get out there and it doesn't take much to film it once you're there. Many people have asked about my rig and there just isn't much to it so I don't know how this ended up being 10mins! I will still post trails Tuesday’s but might start peppering these in for the other rigs you see on the channel. Anyway hope you enjoy it, ask any questions you may have and I'll get to them fast, thanks for watching!

My Tires:
amzn.to/2whk2MF
I love these tires. The only others I'd take are the BFG KO2 but they don't make them in this size and the KM2's are amazing. You can probably imagine the amount of driving I do weekly and how much abuse my tires get.
My Tire Deflators:
amzn.to/2nYVxzU
These tire deflators have many $15 copies but the others just don't hold up or are inaccurate. I don't know what the deal is, they look identical to me too but read the reviews- they're bad. I've been using these Staun's for over a year and never had a problem, I air down a lot. Set them at the trail so your tires will be the same temp when you get to the trail next time.
My Compressor:
amzn.to/2PuerLH
There are better ones but I'd just get a bigger VIAIR, not someone different. Airs up all my 33's from 14psi to 37psi in less than 10 minutes. The in-line gauge is inaccurate when the compressor is on because of the pressure passing through. You need to switch it off to get a real reading. You can combat this by figuring out what incorrect reading corresponds to the real one. When mine is right at 3 Bar (43psi) it's slightly over 37psi. I put it on another tire and then use my real gauge to set it exactly.
My Microphone:
amzn.to/2P1S3sb
My microphone is the worst good mic you can get. BUT don't be fooled, it's a very good mic. Picture me getting in my car for the 50th time after I just ran up and down a hill... for the 50th time. Do you see me disconnecting my mic and gingerly setting it in a case? No. It stays connected to the tripod, gets thrown into my plastic cargo area and bounces around with other heavy items until the next one. It gets terrible interference from WiFi so you must make sure that it's off on your camera or phone. If you are trying to use this with your phone you need to get a TRS to TRRS cable which RODE makes. This is required because your phone will think the mic is headphones.
B Roll Shoes:
amzn.to/2o1HFJb
Might be the most comfortable shoe I've ever put on out of the box. I mostly run back and forth to get the camera but trail running shoes were all mesh uppers and seemed like I'd hurt the top of my foot on stuff and they'd fill with dirt. Never heard of an approach shoe but now I love them and the grip is insane.
My Tripod:
amzn.to/2o8h6hL
I went through 2 tripods in 1 month, a $20 and a $30. Buy it nice or buy it thrice. This thing gets opened and closed MANY times per week in rain, snow, dirt, and even in the middle of rivers. I love the 2-stage legs so i can make it real low in 2sec instead of shortening all the legs.
My Dashcam(s):
amzn.to/2ndCEfV
So far so good, they record 3min clips deleting the oldest one and recording a new one if the card is full. Screen displays front camera, rear camera or both and can also playback and lock clips you don't want recorded over until you get home to upload.
My Drone:
amzn.to/2KUGWAp
You can tell how easy it was to progress through my videos. Besides maybe five times, you've seen every bit of flying since I got it. I don't fly in the city and I don't go to the mountains and not make a video. It is VERY easy to use.
My Drone ND Filters:
amzn.to/2MHV0R0
The filters are a must. Again I have the worst ones and I am still very pleased. My first use was video #35 and I think it is very apparent. Illinois Gulch (#34 obviously) has a completely white sky, way too much blue. I'm still not even good about selecting the right one or changing them out but it's 10x better than nothing.
My Books:
amzn.to/2wmd20O CO
amzn.to/2BzDIBc CO North
amzn.to/2ByPuvy Moab
FunTreks books are great. I like to bring as much information as possible when I go to the middle of nowhere. They have coordinates and maps for everything, very in-depth info on sturdy pages.
This is the stuff I've tested, this is what I like. I am very hard on all of my equipment frequently and it still works.

just wanted to add a couple things i missed: the bottom drawers are screwed down into the wood and top row glued down to the bottom row. they're all glued to each other where sides are touching. i used some kind of roof repair silicone. i had a tow strap in the cubby in the floor below the mattress/drawers. there was also 2 hatchets in there. i didn't want to waste that whole space but the reality is it's a pain to get anything out so those items have been relocated. in the bag in the crate i also have a CB tuner and cable along with a Lansky knife sharpening kit. the CB power is routed to the right of the radio and behind the glove box to the fuse box with one of these: amzn.to/2p4MqC3

B Roll Offroad yea, hopefully the bronco does well... then maybe Nissan will get the hint. I’ve been looking at used ones tho. It’s a little tricky as the prices are all over the place. I work for Union Pacific RR and your setup would be really useful to me. UPRR can send me to Phippsburg, Pueblo, or Grand Junction without much notice so it’d be nice to be able to crash in my vehicle (definitely can’t in my 2 door).

absolutely! i have very minor mods (2” lift, no sway bars, 33” tires) but my earlier vids the X is stock. i also have Easy/Medium/Hard playlists if you wanna check those out. if you’re going to sleep in back i’d make some kind of platform, the ones i’ve seen have like a 4” rise towards the front. the problem is the trunk kind of goes uphill from back to front, then the seat folds beyond flat to downhill, then the crate is flat. so the sleeping surface basically has a hump in the middle and is only flat at your head.

I tried sleeping in my Xterra a couple of times and gave up. The fold flat passenger front seat makes all the difference. For a while I slung a hammock from the roof rack to a 4x4 post or boulder --- so awesome in the desert heat but having it fail unexpectedly at 3am is like a kick in the sack. I've had multiple tents/poles fail in desert cold/wind while setting them up around midnight --- your setup probably saves you a lot of headaches.

Great bit of content and a good change of pace for the channel. I would love to see more on this end, not that I don't love the trail videos! Random question related to tires. Any specific reason for going with the 285s over the 255s? Personal preference between the 2 sizes? In the market for new tires for the 4Runner and was curious to see your opinion between the sizes. I hope to run into you on the trails sooner or later!

thank you! i had a lot of fun going back to this style, definitely going to bug my friends to do their rigs. only reason is they don't make the KO2's in 255. i love 255 and is the only reason i ran 2 sets of KM2's was for the size haha. i had 32" KO2's on my first Xterra and they were great but i'm not crazy about the stiffness of these E Rated ~33" ones. KO2 is definitely the better tire for what i'm doing, hoping they break in and soften that sidewall a tad over the next few thousand miles. i was thinking maybe it seemed so drastic because my KM2's were super worn because they were also E Rated.

yea i've camped that way before too, not the best (i broke my neck when i was 17 and still have a lot of problems) but works fine in a pinch! usually happens when i'm trying to make a roadtrip in one go and get too tired before the sun comes up. pull over, seat all the way back, try again in 3-4hrs 👍 something about the fire makes lights OK but recently we've had fire bans and when i was walking around with just my light on it felt weird and super exposed. inside the truck it's all glare and can't see out so i don't know, i slept best with all the windows down and no lights on haha, kind of counter intuitive but at least i could see and hear.

Curious on what did to remedy the SMOD issue that plagued the autos. Also with the rear diff, you running stock fluid? Did you run the breather tube for the diff too? personally i like it better for the rough paved roads we have out here, hitting potholes is much less violent. bridge interchanges on corners where the back end would kick out is eliminated. the stiffer springs help a lot with body roll, i think stiffer springs without sway is about the same as stock springs with a sway. it never handled great to begin with and i drive accordingly haha. it’s just a few bolts to take it off, i think it’s worth it to remove and go do some swerving and see how you feel 👍

As I was driving along the interstate today in my car which is almost exactly like yours, including the OME lift kit and the OFF ROAD badge, but not the Rockford Fosgate stereo, I remembered that you mentioned in this video that your UCAs burned out (a couple of times?). I used this lift kit because it would solve the problems of the shitty stock leaf springs plus give me room for my 33s (which are more like 31s), and because it did not require upgraded UCAs. I did replAce my old UCAs, but with cheap stock-shaped ones from ebay. I expect that they will not last because they are cheap; HOWEVER, I wanted to ask you if you thought yours didn't last because they were cheap? or if it was because the new angles of the lift caused the stock configuration problems, or because of the extra stress from wheeling. Can you tell onE way or another? I hesitated on throwing down the five bills on the SPC UCAs; well, because my allowance isn't that big, but also because I didn't know if their rigor would be overcompensating (Face it, at 53 I'm already overcompensating by having the truck in the first place, and I'm 57) and if their adjustability would be overcomplicated or problematic for the teenagers who run the alignment machines these days. I just didn't know if they would jive (I lived during the 70s) with the OME kit. I would appreciate your advice or experience on this, and while I wait, I am going to watch another one of your beautiful Moab videos to get ready for my nap. Thank you!

thanks for all the kind words! i actually JUST got back from Moab 10mins ago with some more videos! i replaced them at ~160,000 from the stock ones so it was just time because of one of the ball joints and a couple bushings. that late in the game it’s such a pain to get the old stuff out i went with the SPC’s to just replace everything at once. in the future when i break a ball joint they’re much easier to replace and if the tech knows what they’re doing should be easier to align.

@@BRollOffroad I see, thanks. I added cam bolts to the LCAs when I did the mod, so camber adjustments were a dream for the tech who aligned my car after. Based on what you're saying, I'll let these UCAs naturally expire and save my pennies against fancier replacements. I get out to CO fairly often to climb, but this is my first 4WD drive vehicle and I have not gone on a crazy road on purpose so far. Just finished this build to get me further into the back country for potential climbs and backpacks. That's why Moab interests me, so I'm going to throw down for that book you list in your comment section. Anyway, I hope I run across you out there; we can compare vehicles and you can give me some tips. . . . In the meantime, gonna keep on watching your vids, subscribed yesterday. . . .

@@climbingwithoutpassion2343 awesome! and yea, "if it ain't broke don't fix it" then when the time comes might as well upgrade. as far as real benefits i didn't notice any increased travel or anything, most just that they're now easily serviced in the future. rereading my first response i was definitely pretty tired haha. if you've never been to Moab you gotta go, even if you didn't climb or bike or do anything, it's just a sight to see. i've been all around it in ~40 mile radius and everything has been unique and interesting.

@@BRollOffroad Question of a noob: In Moab, and in CO, do you need permits to camp along these trails, or is there any other restriction about camping? Or is it generally dispersed camping?

  • @BRollOffroad

    @BRollOffroad

most of where we go is either BLM or National Forest which is usually dispersed and free. there are sometimes campgrounds or small reserves inside the boundaries that require a fee but will have a toilet and maybe water or showers. also on trails like Fins N Things and Hells Revenge in Moab they are part of the Sandy Flats Recreation Area and require payment. almost everything has a length restriction of 2 weeks. all that said i’ve been going nearly every weekend for a decade and have paid to camp less than 5 times so there’s plenty of free stuff out there! edit: also dispersed means staying at some pre-existing area with a fire ring, we never make any new campsites.

it’d be better to, with or without the lift can fit either 285/75/16 or 255/85/16. you have to heat up and push in the little bump in the back of the fender liner but it’s real easy, just look up Xterra Melt Mod. i currently have 285/75 but switching back to 255/85 next set.

@@piratedredger1857 the BFG KO2's were the first offroad tires i ever bought. they never served me wrong so i kept buying them, have had 3 sets since. i switched over to the BFG KM2's on my Ranger and also on the Xterra which is what i'll be switching back to next time. i think the KO2 is a better tire overall but they don't make it in 255/85 for some reason.

it’s just a mirror of the passenger side. driver’s seat forward with the same kind of crate behind it and rear seat folded flat. everything i need from the drawers goes into the 2 crates, the major difference is that side is 2/3 fold seat so it’s much more than double wide. also whenever we need anything instead of a drawer we gotta lift the mattress and the crate lids which is kind of a pain. when in route the crates come off the floor and onto the backs of the rear seats and we roll. there’s a quick shot of it on the 4th post back on my Instagram.
