Hi! I just saw your comment and I was wondering if you already tried to do this technic and if you think soldiering can be better than electroforming. Iam also doing electroforming and trying now trying to think if it's possible to do the same things just soldering. Many hugs!

I do all my soldering on a large ceramic floor tile. You can find these at any home improvement store. The first video "Soldering Made Easy Video 1" mentions the tile and other material you will need for soldering. Thanks for your comment.

Hi Ingrid. My husband bought this ring for me it is a "Twisted Wire Ring" by James Avery. I did make the necklace.

What iron are you using? I'm looking for a narrow tip for attaching bails. Purchased 3 irons from Amazon all have wide tips and none have compatible smaller replacement tips ?!

Thanks so much for such a clear tutorial. I have to take my new soldering iron back because it doesn't get hot enough. I've been putting caps on crystals with this technique. I bought it at Harbor Freight and sometimes you get what you pay for. What brand do you use?

YES. THE ONE AT HARBOR FREIGHT IS I BELIEVE EITHER A 25 WT OR 60 WATT. AND IT'S JUST NOT HOT ENOUGH. YOU CAN GO TO LOWES OR HOME DEPOT AND GET A BUTANE TOUCH LIGHT A CIG LIGHTER WITCH COMES WITH A SOLDER TOP , OR GO TO MICHAELS OR.HOBBY LOBBY WITH A %50 OFF COUPON AND GO ONTO JEWLERY SUPPLY AT MIKES. There is some gold and some brass solder on the market. However, they both melt at a very high temperature. The amount of heat that you would have to use would discolor your plated settings. In addition the cost of brass solder is too high to be cost effective. The gold solder is actual gold. So, you can imagine how high it would be. If you want your pieces to be gold you can make them with raw brass and send them off to be plated or in a pinch you could do them in brass and take some brass colored enamel paint and go in and put a coat over the solder to match the color.

When I try to solder this way the solder seems to turn into a ball and fall off the stone, and when I get it to stick to the copper tape it burns. Could it be an issue with my flux or the type of solder I'm using? Anything helps, I've been stumped on this for a while!! Thanks for the great tutorial!

Since I don't know what kind of solder you are using or what the condition your soldering iron is in I am just guessing that it could be one of two things. Either your solder has a high melting point and the iron does not get hot enough or the solder iron is not clean. Hope that helps. If the soldering iron is dull you might try wiping it down with some steel wool. Your soldering iron should be stored with a little bit of solder on it to keep it from oxidizing.

What kind of solder are you using? Is that just regular solder wire? What is it made of? Where do you get the foil? I really want to try this.

Hi Marie. I can see no problem at all using this technique with a pebble. Very little heat is transferred to the stone and most pebbles are silica based rocks. I would recommend cleaning the pebble before applying the copper tape.

This is just the info I was looking for! One question: is there a copper colored solder? Or maybe a gold/brass colored solder?

Hi Eve. There is no gold, brass or copper colored solder in common use. There is some exotic colored high temperature solder that is also expensive.

There are a few pantina’s that you can use to change the color of the solder that are cheaper than using copper colored solder. But Rings n things jewelry making supply does sell copper colored solder but it’s pricy.

The problem with the copper and brass colored solder is that they have a very high melting temperature of over 1,200 degrees and will not work with a soldering iron for this type of project. The solder used in this project melts around 400 degrees.

How do you know which stones can withstand the heat? I’m guessing opals would explode due to water content in 5he stone. Is this correct? Is there a way to check first. I’m new to this but am going to try it this weekend.

This technique uses a soldering iron and this generates a very small amount of heat compared to a torch or heat gun. There should be no problem at all using any silica based stones or glass. I do not think the opal would explode but there is a good chance the heat would damage the fire in the opal.

what do you mean the solder iron oxidizes, what does it look like if it does?

Hi Donna, Rust would be a form of oxidation. It will not appear as rust and you will not be able to see the oxidation on the soldering iron but the solder will be prevented from adhering to the soldering iron due to the oxidation. When the solder will not stick to the soldering iron I clean the tip with steel wool and a damp cloth. Tinning a soldering iron prevents oxidation. Search on KZread for "how to tin a soldering iron tip" for additional information.

Hi I'm hoping you can help me I'm new to solder in jewelry. I bought a bunch of tumbled Crystals and Stones they're polished and I went to put on the copper tape and it moved around just a little bit then I soldered with the soldering iron and the tape and silver solder started to move around after I had hardened and the cap I made came off. I feel stuck at the moment with my jewelry making I'm not sure how 2 make the copper tape stick to Polished / tumbled Stones I bought a Dremel and ruff ruff end some of the crystal / Stone and I tried to take off some of the Polish and then put the tape copper tape on however it's still moved around slightly then I put the silver solder on and it still came off do you have any suggestions? I am not looking to sell any of my stuff I just do it for fun and to help with my anxiety so I'm not competitor or anything like that thank you

Hi Ashley. The problem is that there is no edge for the tape to firmly grip. In this case I use two pieces of tape to form a cage. Both pieces of tape need to completely encircle the tumbled stone. Just lightly paint the solder onto the tape to minimize moving the tape. The essayist way to work with tumbled stones is to simply glue a bell cap to the stone using E6000 or Epoxy cement. Do not use a glue like Super Glue that is brittle when it dries. www.jansjewels.com/bell-caps-1.html

Is there a weight limit to this? I have a large palm rose quartz I want to make into a large pendant, would this method work? It's about 2.5" long, 1.5" across, and 0.625" at it's thickest point.

Hi Anne. I think that the stone would be too heavy and the foil would eventually pull away from the stone where the jump ring is attached. I cannot say that it would not work, but a wire wrap technique would be more secure.

I tried this and after a few days I was able to peel the tape right off which meant the solder on top of the tape came right out too.

Hi Candace, I am not sure what is going on. Possibly you did not use enough solder or the tape was not tight enough or completely stuck to the stone.

Any idea what type of vintage stone the leaf pendant actually is?

Hi David. The solder wire I used is prefluxed acid core solder with a melting temperature of 300 degrees. I also used some vintage soldering chips that require flux. You can find the solder I used in the video at: www.jansjewels.com/soldering-paste-soldering-torches-1.html

can we make it gold plated?

Hi Tyler. I am not an expert on plating. The soldered pieces I have sent out to be plated did not have a problem with plating the solder. It is common for the piece to be first plated with nickle before plating with gold or silver.

I am sorry. However, i have tried the video on several devices and the sound was fine on all of them. We are actually using voice overs because the camera wasn't doing a very good job with the sound. I am not sure where your problem is coming from. have you tried a different device?

@@Jansjewels I thought the sound was soft so I turned the sound up on my keyboard and it was fine then. Must remember to turn it back down again next time I listen to music though! 😅
