Basic PVC Christmas Tree Frames -- Suggested Alternatives

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Some commenters on two previous videos I made about how to make PVC Christmas tree frames offered suggestions on how to avoid having to heat bend PVC pipe. In this video, I tried out a couple of their suggestions utilizing hoola hoops and PEX water pipe. Background music courtesy bensound.com.

Great process improvement tips you use in your video over your previous video. I myself was thinking you could use heat shrink on the screws that wires wrap around. For cutting PVC I either use a hand PVC cutter or a chop saw, especially the latter if I am trying to get uniform cuts on straight pipes.

I made my own outdoor Christmas tree decorations by using upside-down metal tomato cages. I turned the cages upside-down, wrapped the 3 loose legs together (teepee-style) and then wrapped pine garland around the frame. In the front yard, they look like real Christmas trees.

With the top cap method, you could use an end cap like for the legs, screwed to the top and insert a short piece of pipe to add a Star, or Angel, or any other type of ornament. Just be sure to drill a hole to drain out any water that might get in. With the teepee style, you could just use one of the legs.

I made a PvC tree using a square base. similar to the pyramids. I made the base using 8 pieces of PvC. 4 elbows and four tees. Each side was made of 2 pieces of PvC with a tee in the middle..PVC pipe was then pushed into the tees then joined at the top giving the teepee shape. I didn't use glue or screws just tapped the pieces into the fittings. wrapped it with Garland, added lights and decorations and voila!

I was thinking along similar lines but didn't say anything earlier because I knew you'd reach the same conclusion. PEX is great, but there's a trade-off of stability for cost and convenience. I also thought about suggesting a compact bender or ring roller (check the many Harbor Freight reviews on KZread), but that's going in the opposite direction from plastics: Metal is more durable, but you're going to spend a lot more money and/or time, although there are a lot of options if you have the imagination and willingness to try things like rebar or aluminum conduit tubing or garden edging as a starting point. I don't like PVC because of the environmental impact, but it's easy to work with because it's flexible (but not too flexible), comes in so many sizes, and someone makes a fitting for every purpose imaginable. If you don't see what you need at the hardware store, look up PVC furniture; they carry three-way connectors for corners, odd angles that aren't just 90/45/22.5, etc. Also, you might look up Spider Joints (see Spider Hill Prop Works), which are great for making custom poseable characters with 1" PVC instead of being limited to standard fittings. As for cutting PVC, ratcheting cutters are a good investment and even the small ones will do up to 1.25". They also work on PEX or garden hoses or whatever. I even used them to make clean cuts on pipe insulation instead of struggling with scissors. I suppose you could prune with them too, but I don't want you to put your shears out of a job.

Thank you for the insightful comments. I recently purchased a pvc pipe heating gizmo from pvcbendit.com but haven't tried it yet. It's a snake-shaped heating element that you insert inside the pipe to soften the plastic until it's flexible like rubber. If it works, I'll make a demonstration video--but for something other than Christmas trees.

Instead of using PVC piping could you use broom handles for the three legs of the tree with a hoola hoop ring and then secure the hoop at the bottom with duct tape and the tie wraps and do this for the top of the tree too, use tie wraps to secure?? You could also put a Star on top by securing the star to each leg with a tie wrap to keep the star in place??

I'd try using the black Gorilla brand duct tape. That stuff is super tough and sticky. You could cut off pieces of the tape, then tear those pieces into thinner strips, winding them X-style around where the hoops cross the legs or in a circle where the three sides intersect at the top. It might not last more than a season, but you can redo the tape next year. I doubt that adhesives like Liquid Nail would stick well to plastic, especially since the points of contact are so small. Good luck. Let us know what you try.
