Basic orchid care: re-potting oncidiums!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This week Plant Lovers, a favourite Oncidium type orchid of mine is in need of a re-pot - Beallara Eurostar - so I thought it was a great opportunity to make another basic Oncidium re-pot video! In this video we'll look at some different types of Oncidium type hybrids, the sort most easily found in hardware stores, nurseries and florists, and the differing growth habits mine have. We'll look at my preferred re-potting method, but of course there are many ways to pot and grow these types of orchids so find the best method that works for you and your climate.
If you want to find the species ancestor of your hybrid orchid you can here: orchidroots.com/
And if you want to research the species ancestor once you've found it, you can here: www.orchidspecies.com/
The mycorrhizal fungi I use is this one but google search where ever you are to find a recommended one: biostim.com.au/shop/myco-gold...
I have an Oncidium play list here: • ONCIDIUM ORCHID CARE

    Hi Matthew, I Came across your channel a month ago and am so HAPPY!😄 as I live in Melbourne and I love Orchids and have a collection I have been thankfully able to move with me to new rentals. I have been binging your videos every weekend to catch up! 🤣 You have given me the courage to explore trying other types of orchids to grow other than cymbidiums and phalaenopsis. I got some young Cattleya's which have buds on them, so fingers crossed!🤣 You really have reduced the stress level regarding orchids! Thank you so much 🥰 Lisa

    I have three colmanara Masai Red oncidium that I just adore. They are similar to your Bobcat, but have no yellow and a deeper red. Ninja orchid said it was hands down her favorite orchid in her collection. So I was on the hunt to find it. I just love oncidium! Thank you for this repot video

    Removing dry sheaths also allows new roots to escape & not grow up quite so much. Very interesting video again. Thank you.

    Hello Matthew and greetings from Finland! I only found you channel a while a go and have been watching your content a lot since then. My growing conditions in Finland are veeeery different from yours, but I have learned so much from you and wanted to say thank you 😀 I just bought my first cymbidium thanks to watching your lovely videos about them - you actually made me feel like I could manage to grow them too. Dreaming about getting an oncidium sotoanum next and yes, that would be influenced by you too. See what you are doing from across the world?? 🤣So there are definite consequences to watching your content, but regardless, I'm looking forward to learning more from you. Absolutely love your channel and your personality, you put a smile on my face. Thank you for that 😃

    Don't be scared! Just do it when you see the plant is producing new growths. These will have new roots emerging which will establish themselves into the new potting mix. Good luck!

    Just in time! My Oncidium (Howeara/Leomesezia) Lava Burst just arrived the other day. Problem is I isolated it but the pesky little mice infiltrated the isolation and ngawed off some leaves and new roots and I just saw it this morning! I just got a bare root wild cat, Bearcats oncidium. I poted with medium bark and charcoal. Is it a vigorous grower? I put it in a 3 inch pot. Do you think I will have to repot it sooner or later?

  • @helloplantlovers

    @helloplantlovers

    Hi there - not a particularly vigorous grower - you will have to repot it eventually though as the medium will break down.

    Hi there - we don't have the same zonal systems in Australia as you do in the US so I have no idea what challenges your climate may present. Best bet would be to find an orchid group in the area, join that and start chatting to other growers and get their suggestions. Good luck!

    Hi there - it's just a regular slow release. I don't use much and try to avoid putting directly onto any roots which might be damaged by it. So far no issues!
