This video just popped up in my feed. I enjoy-joyed watching it. You can tell the instructor has been teaching beginning welders for quite some time. Listening to him was just like watching a safety film from the factory and OSHA, all rolled into one! Hat's off to you, Sir! His students are LUCKY to have him! My Dad taught me to weld with oxy/actlyn torch and a wire coat hanger, by the time I was 10. Then by 14,he had me fluent with Silfoss, brazing & silver-soldering A friend / Industrial Arts teacher, in junior high, taught me basics of Stick Welding. I taught myself MIG. My little machine is the next oldest from your unit (125). I don't use the innert gas. I run reverse polarity and .035 Flux-core wire. The biggest project I've built with it is a 1/3 circle raised deck around my pool with a wheelchair ramp up to it. (decked with 5/4" wood decking). I'm saying this to state one thing...This little Lincoln single phase welder has lots of potential and can be used on BIG jobs, easily! Learn it. Learn how to take care of it. It will take care of YOU. T H A N K S !!!

MIG = Metal Inert Gas (GMAW = Gas Metal Arc Welding), Stick (SMAW = Shielded Metal Arc Welding), TIG = Tungsten Inert Gas (GTAW = Gas Tungsten Arc Welding), Flux (FCAW = Flux Core Arc Welding), Pipe (PAW = Pipe Arc Welding) Mechanized Inert Gas is the "old" term not used in today's welding industry.

Required some patience to get through this "class", just like every class I've attended that was worth a darn! I've watched a bunch of welding videos for beginners and almost all of them miss a key item: a beginner is EXACTLY that and has NO knowledge of the process. This guy does just the opposite making this a good video for the rank beginner.

I just did my first spot welds yesterday. They almost all turned out good, except two that burned through, which I deliberately did with too much heat. Even the welders on the mig welding forum that I belong to were impressed, thanks to this video and the instructor. Excellent video! I would recommend it to any beginner.

Nearly 50 years welding I stumbled upon this video. For sure an excellent instructional video for the very newest welder, and a good one. One note... One should never stand in front of a regulator in case it explodes, and always release the regulator's adjustment so when a cylinder is cracked open all that pressure does not hit the regulator bonnet. Once the regulator is charged, then you dial up your working pressure. After purging you release the regulator's adjustment.

I am just starting to learn how to get into welding. I learned a lot from this video. Yes, there was no hair-tie and safety is promoted for the first part of the lecture, but to someone that has only ever soldered or sweated copper pipes, this was verey helpful. I was surprised that he called it "Mechanized" because I thought it stood for "Metal" so I will continue learning. For my 14 year old son, who wants to learn, this is a great start.

The shielding gas is to prevent exposure to atmospheric gases. That is, not just oxygen, but also nitrogen and water vapor. Nitrogen is really the biggest culprit, so if you name just one, name nitrogen. Oxygen is even used in small amounts mixed in as part of some shielding gasses. Metal, which is hot to the point that it is melting, absorbs these gases and vapors. This makes for a porous, and therefore poor, weld. They can also make welding more difficult since the metal will spatter.

When I went to welding school my hair was nearly to my ankles in length. I cut it off (after over 12 years of growing it!) Before the first semester ended! You're exactly right: anybody with any sense knows you have get it all pulled back and secured well- preferably in a tight braid. Mine was so long I had to braid it back and then try to twist the braid into a bun, which then gave me trouble getting my hood on. Just sticking it down your jacket doesn't cut it. Mine would've hung out the bottom of the jacket anyway lol but when you turn your head hair tucked in a jacket would come right out and be burnt off instantly.
