I'm sorry to say Tim...As someone who had to qualify on LIRR Book of Rules in the past (and you needed 100% to pass the Signal Test)...you would have failed based on when I took the test at least. The three horizontals (Stop Signal) was always marked an "X" if you just said "Stop." It's "Stop-Signal", and for some back when I originally qualified (1997), you would be marked wrong if you left out the hyphen! Great footage as always...Just giving much respect to those who have to endure certification on the LIRR (and recertification every three years).

The aspects are designed to resist failure. For the symbols that form a line, you can still read the signal even if one light is burned out. (I imagine the policy is to treat it as a stop, though.) For the aspects that use a dot on the bottom, you'll notice that they carefully degrade. If the signal is supposed to show "stop and proceed" but the bottom center light is burned out, it degrades to "stop", which is less permissive than if the light wasn't burned out. They do the same thing with the colored aspects; if the flasher circuit on "stop and proceed" malfunctions, then the signal says "stop" instead. This was inherited from semaphore signals, where if the mechanical linkage broke, the signal would fall by gravity to "stop". The engineers are always one step ahead of the unreliability of mechanical devices.
