Basic Jewellers Filing Skills Explained

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this short video I explain a few essential techniques that need to be mastered to ensure neat and accurate filing work.
It's not difficult to do but it needs to be practiced with great attention.
Even the most simple filing requires good hand and eye coordination. Actually it goes deeper than that. Both hands work together to feel and understand how the piece is held and re positioned in time with the file blade motion while simultaneously feeling how much pressure should be applied and exactly where. Its important to watch the file on the piece to gain understanding of what's being done and make any necessary adjustments to achieve the desired result.

for people only starting out.. we goldsmiths have calluses where our files/mops/buffs make regular contact and we often forget how sharp and mean our tools are to hands without them. a tip I would recommend as well: your peg is as unique as you are, don't be afraid of customizing it to what works for you.

And the sharp point of the needle file hitting underneath of the fingernail is just icing on the cake

Thank you for producing interesting videos. As a jewellery making noob, one of the issues I face is with my piercing saw, and what tension the blade should be under for each material, material thickness, and if I am cutting straight lines or not. I have several piercing saws of varied depths. One has a fine adjustment on the front, the others are only adjustable for the length of the blade. I have been trying to keep a consistent tension using the pitch tone of the blade when plucked. I should maybe purchase a fixed tension saw.
