Basic how-to on air/fuel adjustment on a 1300 VTX

Just a basic rundown on adjusting the air/fuel idle mixture on nearly all engines with the mixture screw in between the butterfly valve and the engine.

    That air/fuel extension screw is kinda pricey for what you get. I just ordered an after market extension screw, made for Honda dirt bikes ( has the same end on it as the stock VTX screw) and just epoxied one of those flexable screw driver shafts to it. So now it hangs just behind the carb, so you can't see it, but works perfect to adjust eh air/fuel mixture now. I'm frugal and like to save a buck and this mod cost me about $5!

    This is one of the easiest bikes to tune once you get familiar with the carb setup on it. Only having one carb makes it easy. My Shadow has two carbs that need to come out to do any changes on them, and then you have to synchronize them when you're all done. It's time consuming to say the least.

    I agree. I had bikes with 4 carbs before. The only thing about this bike is it has the coolant running through the carb so make sure you burp it if you remove the carb to clean it cause it has coolant lines hooked up to the carb.. Honda says you have to drain the cooling system but you don't. Ive done it a few times.

  • @MoparMasters

    @MoparMasters

    5 жыл бұрын

    The braided wire is the Glen's air/fuel mixture adjustment I installed. This won't be on a factory bike. The 2nd knob is for idle speed adjustment. The engine should idle at 900RPM's when fully warmed up. The 3rd you'll notice it has a clamp on it. This is actually the drain tube for the air filter housing and should be drained during every oil change. It drains all the oil droplets and combustion byproducts that make their way into the housing during normal operation through the crankcase ventilation hose.

You at least showed were the screw was, so that answered 1 question for me. I was reasonably sure that was it, but was agraid of mucking with it for fear of jacking it up worse. so now I think Ive got the general gist, 1 thing that you say keeps throwing me though, you say dont forget to adjust the idle? I kinda thought thats what this was doing via the fuel air mix? is that what you mean?, or is there another way to adjust rpm idle that I'm clueless on? thanks for your help

  • @theripper121

    @theripper121

    There is an idle adjustment knob on most bikes that sets the idle in unison to both carbs. Basically what you want to do is have a nice warm to hot bike before starting. Get an idea of what your idle sounds like if you don't have a tach. Then you set the main idle down a bit lower because this will aid in letting you hear what your idle mixture screw adjustments will be doing to the bike. Its much easier to hear how each cylinder is reacting with the main idle turned down a tad. With your warm to hot bike and your main idle down a tad. You start with one carb idle mixture screw and pick a direction to turn slowly you will hear it effect the idle of one cylinder. Your goal is to get that cylinder running smooth with a high rpm. For example you turn screw all the way in and seat it the cylinder will probably slow to a crawl or even die. As you turn the screw out you will hear the rpm start to pick up than when you keep turning the rpm will again slowly start to die again. You want to adjust it in the middle to where the RPM is highest and the cylinder sounds the strongest. Then you move to your other cylinder and repeat. Now will both idle screws set you want to adjust your main idle knob again back up to factory settings if you have a tach or by ear before you started. I hope this all makes sense. I know this post is old but I hope it helps someone out.

    I have two VTX , both 1300cc. One I bought with Vance Hinds exhaust. Since this didn't come with stock exhaust , I can't tell if the carbs were properly re jetted .The bike runs fine but about every 800 miles I have been checking the spark plugs which I noticed are carbon fouled. I replaced them, cleaned them , have put various carb cleaners in the tank(Gum Out, Marvel Mystery Oil & Sea Foam )and changed the air filter but the problem is still there. I think the air/ fuel mixture is too rich. Questions: Does any one have an idea what the problem is? Where did you get that fuel /air screw extention?

    OG Timbercraft Unfortunately, the carburetor has to be removed. If the pilot screw is stock, it will require a "D"-shaped tool to turn it. Before you remove the carburetor, remove the vacuum line from the fuel petcock and make sure the diaphragm isn't torn.Double check that the choke isn't working its way out. If those check out good, remove the carburetor and see if the pilot jet has fell or vibrated out. Also remove the carburetor bowl and make sure the slow and main jets are still in place.

    Chuck May I dont but they are very simple. Pull the 4 chrome covers straight off the engine from the side and the plugs are right there. Give the spark plug boots a good twist to break the seal before pulling them off. I believe the spark plug needs a 14mm deep well socket to remove them. Use a piece of rubber hose that fits over the tip of the plug to start the threads on the new plugs to prevent cross-threading.

    The idle speed adjustment shouldn't have any effect on fuel delivery. If idle speed is set too low it could cause stumbling when blipping the throttle. Idle should be set at 900 RPM on a warm engine.

    Most carbureted bikes won't run well with a spike intake. They just don't create enough backpressure. You can try adjusting the pilot screw, but don't turn it out farther than 3 to 3.5 turns. Any more and it can fall out. If that helps but it still runs a little bad, you may have to go up a size on the pilot jet.

    If the bike was running fine then all of a sudden changed, it could be a few things. The first that comes to mind is did you change fueling stations. It's possible your getting poor quality fuel. If that isn't the case, you may have either a fuel line or filter clogging up, or your carburetor has some trash in it. Either way will require some disassembly to get to the root cause.

If you dont know where it is, figure it out. Cause you cant see it on these bikes unless you take the carb off or have a replacement extension screw like from glens vtx garage which is what i have. It makes it so you can do this without removing the carb . Some have also done it other ways.

    I didn't hear anyone putting the poster down, they were just saying he didn't show anything, which he didn't, but he was cool about it and came on the comments and explained further, no harm no foul. We are not all mechanics, and my VTX1100 won't stay running, and I don't have a truck to take it to a mechanic. Figure it out!!?? Wtf do you think people are doing on the internet checking out these types of DIY engine repair/tuning videos?? TRYING TO FIGURE IT OUT!! When you come across a video that says it's about how to adjust air/fuel mixture, on the type of bike you have, then you expect to see at least a little bit of the parts of the bike he is turning/messing with. That's the WHOLE POINT of youtube...VISUALS!!! Without the visual part of the advice, it's just a forum or a blog. DERP!! This post has nothing to do with the poster, Moody Lane, his heart was in the right place, and he gave great advice, he just had the camera turned the wrong way for part of the video, shit happens, I've done it. I just hate when people like Chris talk out their ass and put people down.

    2 turns from what? You give no point of reference. Unless I missed it. I've been trying to ascertain as to "where" the air/fuel screw is. I just purchased an air/fuel adjustment tool from Glens VTX garage (not the permanently mounted one you have) but I don't know where the screw is. My bike has been running extremely rich and I want to correct it before selling it.

    vtxman1300 Sorry I took so long. The air/fuel screw is located on the bottom of the carburetor behind the bowl on the engine side of the carb. For clarification, You will screw the pilot screw in until it is LIGHTLY seated. I cant stress enough, don't screw the mixture screw in tight at all. As soon as it stops, its considered seated.

    They don't make a camera small enough to see what I'm doing. I'm turning a screw in tiny increments that's buried on the bottom of the carburetor, behind the carb bowl. Even if I showed you my hand turning the knob, you would never see movement due to only turning it a few degrees at a time.

    Hi. I have read many topics about this motorcycle and its carburetor and I think that you can skip buying it. Why buy a motorcycle whose engine has a specially reduced capacity and is not a newly developed engine? It has one carburetor, which is strange since the Honda Shadow 125 engine has two. It has an aluminum intake manifold because the rubber one cannot withstand vibrations, and the aluminum one must be heated because under normal operating conditions it will condense the mixture created by the carburetor. Additionally, two candles per cylinder. Everything works fine until it leaves the factory. Same shit as the Intruder 800 which has two different carburetors. In addition, a weak spine frame like the Hornet 600 and one brake caliper at the front. Anyone who knows motorcycles knows that if a motorcycle is to have fire and ride well, it must have a separate carburetor for each cylinder, the same carburetor, frame and brakes adapted to the weight of the motorcycle and accessories, because almost every chopper owner adds weight to the motorcycle and does not lose weight. And here are the combinations of turning the mixture screw to make the motorcycle ride well depending on the time of day. What a mess.
