Too excited to be getting this module from Amazon in a couple days. I'm intrigued by the sandbox nature of this system and book and I'm playing on using the book to inject encounters into my first homebrew dungeon, Tomb Of The Goblin King. Planning on filling my dungeon with goblins and orcs ruled by a malevolent bugbear chief.

Chaotic Caves is a great module, the caves themselves can be easily taken out and used as pre-made lairs and are even better with a bit of tweaking. For the Orc Caves I stuck a 4th level Cleric in the temple with two 1st level acolytes and replaced the Hobgoblin at the entrance of Cave B with another 1st level Orcish Acolyte. They work great on their own or as a bench mark for how populated a lair should be.

I used the keep and a portion of the caves as part of a power move by a chaotic clergy to take over the area like mentioned in the video. They are intolerant of demi-humans so seek to clear them out as well as the caves being home to an ancient tomb and underground temple of their god. As things progress, an evil knight and entourage (Including beasts) show up to either help take over the area or take out the PCs. Added a young Umber Hulk stalking the caves, snatching prey now and then like the shark in Jaws. PCs and the remaining humanoid tribes have the option of working together then which if either survive could make things interesting in the area after. I also added a small band of elves who recently moved into the area due to the activity in the caves. A local druid rounds things out. Also added a few wandering monsters in the forest: owl bear, giant constrictor, pack of wolves and an ettercap to keep players on their toes

I never paid this adventure much attention because I thought it was just going to be a remake of The Keep on the Borderland. But it seems to be much more! I'll definitely check it out. I like the idea of breaking up the individual dungeons and individually placing them all over the map.

Currently using this module for our game and focusing on bandits at the moment since a random bandit encounter ended up with a TPK so now working that into the overall storyline for the area. Also went through and personalized all of the town buildings with family names, business names, and descriptions of the buildings themselves. Currently working in a tangent that could lead the party to the Morgan's Fort module for even more sandbox goodness.

Is it the bandit group just outside of town? I used that encounter to almost get a TPK. Instead of killing the players, I just had the bandits rob them. It acted as a good reminder that the game is deadly. This isn't 5e.

Kinda an homage to Keep on the Borderlands, with some changes of course. Cool little Sandbox adventure that can really inspire and last quite a while, if you want to expand it. Also very easy to add it into and link it with other old school adventures from back in the day. 👍Thnx for this!

Link it with Mogansfort and you've got a lot of gaming for a lower level group, with some sandbox and standard dungeon crawling. What's not to love

@@finger3181 Absolutely 💯! Put it in Thunder Rift just for kicks, and you've then got access to all those old, cool Thunder Rift modules for low level as well. String them together with this one and Morgansfort, followed by leaving the Rift to head to the Village of Hommlet and TOEE. He-he-he!! 🤓

This sure looks like a Shasta-Cola clone of Keep on the Borderlands, not a bad thing by any means though, and it looks competently put together.

I remember seeing those tick boxes for health in adventures for HackMaster 4th ed. They also provided free downloads for each adventure of all the encounters so you could print them out and just mark those up.

Great starter adventure to be sure. I hate to write , draw or mark in my books but at printing price I feel that I can. another suggestion for why are all these monsters hanging out - have them all bear a mysterious mark, or the same sigil/rune is found drawn on walls, carved in the sacrificed, leading to a bigger mystery some unseen master or threat.

8:59 "to me, it didn't make sense to have all these monsters just living here." This adventure is based on a D&D adventure called Into the Borderlands. I bet players thought this at the time unless they were absolute beginners.

Having trouble finding any detailed commentary on the exploration rules for BFRPG. Chaos Caves may be RC Cola version of Keep on the Borderlands, but I recognize good ore when I see it 👀

Couple questions about the system. I am planning to introduce my teens (and their friends) to TTRPGs and I am looking for a system. I bought the BF books and went through them and, I must say, it bring a ton of good memories back (started playing in the 80's). However, I am wondering how good of a system BF would be if you want to play a little more long term, especially given the other options available. Would the lack of character customization be a problem (if some want to play same class)? Is the game as fun when hitting higher levels (10+) or some classes like fighter get boring due to lack of change? Would I be better of starting right away with a system a little more complex (Castles and Crusades or 5E) where there are a lot of options a character personalization? Cheers!

We are on our 20 something session and about to reach level 4 in the BFRPG campaign I'm running. The thing about basic that you probably know is that limitations work differently. Not everything is spelled out on the sheet so players need to interact with the game world more than their character sheet. You could also look into OSE or OSE advanced if you want a bit more depth, but I think Basic Fantasy really is a fantastic game. There are a lot of supplements and alternative classes on the BFRPG website too. Paladins, druids, assassins, etc.. Along with more races. And all of it is free as a PDF. I'd go check all of that out as well to help craft your decision. Castles and Crusades is a fantastic game too. It's, in my opinion, a true modern edition of D&D without the D&D logo. It's more D&D than 5e in my opinion (I'm not the biggest fan of 5e though so take my bias into consideration).

can i use the white box rules for this module ?

  • @TheBasicExpert

    @TheBasicExpert

I think you could. You will have to probably change hit points a bit because BFRPG uses d8s for monster hit dice while whitebox uses d6 for everything pretty much.

You get what you pay for. BF is cheap. I actually like the simplicity of the rules and think the author is a master of organization. With that said, I think the adventure modules are not that good. Mostly just hack and slash. As I read through some of the modules I think to myself that I could write this part better.

Yeah; we call it Boring Fantasy RPG. But the modules can be cribbed or adapted for other things and at this price point, I don't mind doing that.
