I first saw a finger bowl in the movie Scarface when Tony and Omar visits Sosa. This video is very informative! I’ve never dined in a restaurant where a finger bowl is offered! That’s cause I’m cheap!!! 🤣😂 Hopefully, I’ll remember the tips shown here should I ever encounter a finger bowl!!! ☮️🖖🏽

Glad she has this video for young people. When I was a teenager I took a girl out to a nice restaurant for the first time and I almost mistook the finger bowl for a water glass... fortunately it had a lemon in it and I hate lemon in drinking water. Then I saw what everyone else was doing and realized my mistake before I could humiliate myself. ^_^;

Actually, the lemon is a godsend if you’re pulling apart buttery crab legs and then you really need to get your fingers clean after that. Nothing more embarrassing than putting greasy fingerprints on fine crystal or even needing to wash your hands before you can use the bathroom. Last thing I wanna do is get greasy stuff on my clothing.

Finger bowls are common place in very nice restaurants, and are brought to the table immediately after the main course has been consumed. Too many fast food restaurants today, so most people have never seen them!

It's not because there's too many fast food restaurants, it's because everybody's broke
we have that at home. My family eats quite formally and i believe its about the way we present ourselves and etc and i know some people find it fussy but its how some people do things and if you dont like it, you dont have to do it.
My first thought is it's useful practically (and I wish I had this more growing up), yet also an potential instrument for pompous gatekeeping, I could imagine a self-absorbed person using abstract dining ritual as a tool to look down on others.
I was disappointed to see there were no fingers in the finger bowl.

She almost showed everything regarding a formal meal except for the sherbet served between courses. My grandmother always had them served throughout the meal. It takes a lot of dishes and silverware. Thank You!
HI thank so much! its helps me a lot...very nice and descriptive.more power and god bless.
It's common to have finger bowls in Hong Kong and Macau at restaurants that serves seafood. Often water is replaced with warm tea with a slice of lemon to help 'degreasing' ones fingers. Don't mistaken it as tea for drinking! 😄

@@faithsrvtrip8768 That's ridiculous. These aren't rules, they are helpful advice on how to eat in a way that is 1) clean, and 2) not disgusting to others at the table. There is no "wrong" way, there are just less successful ways of eating. When I was an undergrad, I was shocked one evening at the way a new friend of mine was eating. I offered to teach her how to properly use a knife. She was annoyed and said I was a snob, then she promptly cut the meat "her way", which involved sending the cut piece of meat and her dinner roll flying across the room onto another diner's table. It was hilarious and humiliating all at once. No surprise, she let me teach her everything about "proper" (that is to say, perfectly practical) dining customs after that.
Thank you so.much sister i am learning a lot from You Love from India

Exactly! And the finger bowl comes with the messy food, regardless of which course it is. You don't eat an artichoke for an appetizer then go thru 3 other courses with oily fingers.
It's not archaic after a seafood basket. You'll want a quick way to rinse some of the grease and stank off your phalanges. Fairdinkum, it's a bit of a refresher, and not one you just tickle your fingertips in. And for those who think that eating with your fingers would seldom happen in such a situation - PEEL PRAWNS WITH A KNIFE AND FORK THEN GET BACK TO ME.

@MatrixOfDynamism theres no reason not to
Traditionally, the finger bowl was presented with the dessert or fruit plate, but then set aside and not actually used until dessert or fruit were finished. See all the 20th-century guides, including Emily Post and Amy Vanderbilt. Through ignorance or apathy, the very recent practice of using the finger bowl BEFORE dessert arose. My guess is that people who were pretending to be cultured, but in reality had no idea what was going on, just made up the nonsense in the video above.
@Meira750
4 жыл бұрын
That is not right. You don't eat a lobster for the fish course and leave your hands messy thru the meat course.There are several other foods that might preceed the meat course which are eaten with the hands to some degree and require washing immediately. At a formal dinner, dessert is not finger food. Neither is fruit although it might happen that you get some on you if you are awkward with knife and fork.
@luiszelaya7569

who gives af… you seem to subscribe to senseless elitist traditions… sheep!
Wrong from the first sentence. If you have something as an appetizer, such as an artichoke, you get a fingerbowl with that course. If you have a different appetizer but say crab or lobster as the fish course, you would have the finger bowl for that. The finger bowl is placed where the bread plate would go if one used them at a formal dinner but since we don't serve butter at formal dinners, it is acceptable to put dry bread, that has not been in one's mouth, on the tablecloth.
@Meira750
4 жыл бұрын
And no, you don't bus your own dishes. The server should remove finger bowl and remnants of the messy food at the same time. S/he should then replace the plate used for that course with the appropriate one for the next course.

@@faithsrvtrip8768 If there is a plate, of course use it. But sorry for your germaphobia, the cloth is perfectly acceptable when there is no plate or butter. My comment about bussing one's own dishes stands. You WAIT until the server removes the fingerbowl with it's liner.
@pastelitasdelflan
4 жыл бұрын
Meira Avrahami: As I mentioned in another post, multiple EXTRA finger bowls would be expected at a meal that features messy food. But the correct place for the finger bowl at a formal meal is at the end, after all the other courses have been served, including dessert and fruit. The woman in this video uses her finger bowl BEFORE the dessert, which is odd and not traditional. She is not cleaning up after a messy course; she seems to be "preparing" for dessert. It's just bizarre.
@pastelitasdelflan
4 жыл бұрын
@@Meira750 Bussing by the waiter would be appropriate for "extra" finger bowls. At a formal meal, the last plate and utensils (whether dessert or fruit) and the finger bowl are all left on the table with the napkin while the guests leave the dining room. The staff cleans up the last course after everyone has left for the sitting room. Traditionally, I should say, as in early- and mid-20th century books on etiquette. Heaven only known what passes for proper behavior today.
I thought it was soup in the bowl.
n den I thot we hav to SQUEEZE the lemon...
Wow, finger bowl. I would eat the lime
I don't believe you pick up the dessert fork and spoon. You slide them down into position.
I thought finger bowl was an Asian thing. We always have finger bowl after having 🦀. And the lemon is to remove the seafood smell. But I don’t understand why not just let the waiters remove the bowl. I mean why is it in the etiquette that guests have to remove the bowl themselves? I think inane places in Asia the writers would remove the bowl and also get you a new base plate (I dunno what it’s called).
Seen this on shrek
@JustinCipriano4 what I meant is that if these things are taken out, the dining can still be done. It will be much simplified that way.

+PASAIDEN I've often wondered about the tradition of having a set of cutlery for each course, and I think it may have something to do with Jews. No, no, I'm not one of those crazy KZread conspiracy hatemongers. ;) I'm serious though. Jewish dietary taboos (kosher rules) can vary from one sect to the next, but some are very strict and believe that certain foods should never touch each other, and that the cutlery used for one should never touch the other. Dairy items and meat are one example; a Jewish girl I used to date had a mom who was super strict that any dishes or cutlery that had EVER touched any dairy product, could NEVER touch any meat - even after being washed! She kept them in separate drawers and everything. (When her daughter wanted to get her mom's goat, she would secretly swap them around... which I always thought was pretty mean. :P ) So you see there could be a very good reason for the separate sets of cutlery, though it may be lost in the distant past now.
@HenningWireless
6 жыл бұрын
Jews?!? Wtf? No the number of different cutlery is to separate the taste. If you have a normal three meal dinner: fish, meat, deserts Which all require knife and forks, it's nice to begin each course with a clean set of cutlery. As well as a fresh and clean glass for the different beverages. Do notice that the shape and size of glaces changes withe the wines, i.e. : White wine, claret, port. As well as the cutlery changes with the dish, i.e. : fish knife vs steak knife. And you might consider eating crêpe suzettes with fork and spoon, actually nice (!) Well I am from Copenhagen, Denmark. And we do considère this way of dining part of style, culture. Manners. It has nothing to do with "rich people".

These videos might seem archaic or hoity-toity, but honestly etiquette classes are regaining ground as younger generations are finding confidence and general politeness lessons within the classes. Sure, they bring along the knowledge of actually being able to navigate a formal dining situation, but it also brings along a confidence that we don't have much of anymore. It seems like a waste of time, and sure, sometimes it is, but knowing this can make some feel better about themselves and the situations they're put in.
