I hope any new players out there hear your words of "generally" and "in general" during this presentation and understand what they mean. "Generally" and "in general" do NOT mean "ALWAYS." Because I increasingly encounter players of all ages who infallibly stay glued to this "positions" and fail to react to what is actually happening in the field of play (for example sagging down into the areas below the dots when it becomes necessary - and it IS often necessary). These are usually the same people who think wingers need to stay on their assigned sides even in the offensive zone and have no clue what F1, F2, F3 means. People need to get out of this old school mentality of hockey and start to realize it is becoming a fluid game of 5 skaters, not three forwards and two defensemen. The best teams have players who manage their roles responsibly but also know when to adjust to the developing play. Finding defensemen deep in the offensive zone and wingers deep in the defensive zone is becoming commonplace. Otherwise, great video, because of course, "in general" this is what you are indeed supposed to do.

That's how I was taught to play as a winger by my coaches who were in their 60's. I wish I would have been taught how to stay with the play on defense instead of covering the faceoff circle and point only.

This was really helpful because I’m very new to hockey and I’m a winger so I’m trying to get some stuff in during the week

As a lifelong "D" I can tell you I have told wingers to "Cover the point man" about a million times. They ALWAYS chase the puck all over and leave the wingers wide open. ALWAYS. You don't have to be right on him, just between him and the puck. "#1- if we have only 2 lines, it's your time to get some rest, #2- If we wrap the puck around the boards, you get it instead of their point man, #3- You are in a position to break out. #4- You're not another guy screening the goalie and, when I get the puck on "D" and go to pass it up to you, you're not standing right next to me. They NEVER do it.

If the puck is in the corner shouldn’t the winger be on the boards so if they rim it it will come to u so u can pass to the centre bc if ur not on the boards ur giving the d time and space and it will make it harder to get the puck out of the zone.
