Basement Entrance Door construction - retaining wall enclosure [not a how-to]

Tools Required: amzn.to/2wm0Hb6 and this amzn.to/2wlGpOM
This video is a quick view of how the retaining walls are set and formed for a basement entrance. If you are going to do it yourself this may be of help just to give you some ideas. I'll have to ask again but I think he paid $7000 for it.

    We do a lot of basement digouts but have yet to have a client want one of these which in our opinion are a super nice addition.

    The basement drain is called a 'soak away'. The process works or doesn't work depending on the soil type. We have extremely clay based soil here which will never drain. Might be worth checking beforehand. In all cases, a drain connected to the system would be preferable (in my humble opinion) as there is no limit to the water it can carry whereas a soakaway can become saturated and then hold water. Great video. Really interesting process. Cheers.

    I think for places like Ontario and Quebec from Canada that type of drain wouldn't work because after winter, when the ice melted, the water will find a way to scape through that type of drain and the problems will escalate quickly. Just if anyone is thinking about it.

    Looks great except that the FLAT porch roof is flat. The first time it rains the water will soak right underneath the flat shingles. They should have either pitched the roof with those shingles or put a flat rubber or metal roof... I also would have connected the outside floor drain into the existing stormwater drain which is within 10 feet of the "deadend" drain they put in... With all that said it looks like a clean job...

  • @SIE44TAR

    @SIE44TAR

    It's possible it has rubber membrane underneath and the shingles are just for aesthetics. At least that's how I would have done it. But yeah, that flat roof will collect a lot of debris.

    Thanks for showing us the construction.We're actually going to build a front basement entrance and was wondering how to drain the rain water without having a sumpump that would make noise inside the basement.For the soakaway, it's an idea but not convinced that it would drain ALL the time.

    The drain they have is unfortunately insufficient. with the amount of water that can build up, it should be tied into a sump pump or drainage system, and although I agree the completed wall is very nice, there is not enough lighting in the area/stairs either

    My neighbor has a similar drain well. During the big storms he sticks a sump pump down it. My HS friend his basement entrance in his Backyard so it's covered by the patio awning. So he doesn't have any water or snow issues.
