In Ontario, Doug Ford removed Rent Control on anything that became a rental unit after the fall of 2018. Keep in mind that not all property owners raise the rent every year, even though they can, BUT now, they see what owners are charging for newer units and naturally say, " I can charge more". I knew this would have a trickle down effect on all other units and I was right. Doug is taking care of people that can afford to own multiple properties instead of helping people that can't even afford to own one property.

As much as I would love to laugh and see the farce, this makes me depressed because that’s how the rental market is these days. 😢😢

Laughing while I cry. When my landlord sells (he keeps talking about doing so) we'll have to choose between living in our car or leaving our city - and it took me almost 11 years to find a doctor here!

True story landlord stories always remind me of the character Sheldon on The Big Bang Theory. Funny to watch sitcoms like that until we experience that sort of thing ourselves. Was there any Big Bang Theory episode in which Sheldon didn't quote one of the landlord and tenant laws whenever he was in a disagreement with his room mate? Like when Sheldon was saying on that one episode, "There is too many people here...".

I rented a place years ago and not even a week later moving in the land lady raised rent by $250. Told her to go pound sand and gave her the worst rep. That’s all you can do is spread word about price gouging renters

Our last slumlord did this as we were unpacking, then tried again 2 months later 2 days before Christmas and wanted the increase by January' 1st. Good thing I knew our rights. He eventually evicted us so 'family' could move in. Ya, we moved one street over - that liar does not have family living there. But we are SO grateful to have the normal, kind, sane landlord we do know. I do find it offputting we call them Lords in this day and age.

I can relate. Last year l went through 6 months of housing instability in Vancouver. It wasn't because l couldn't afford rent. I had the money, but nowhere to live. The first house l moved out of in those 6 months, rent was below $999 (my sister moved out same time she paid $800). At the end of the 6 months when l found a one room basement suite for myself the price hiked up to $1200. Literally! In Vancouver there is no apartments to be found under 1K. At least $1600 for a tiny studio maybe. 2K and above, not uncommon.

Sometimes though, the elements add on the increase of the rent is the increase of property tax (to government), the increase of home insurance (without the government control), the increase of the utilities price and the increase of rental management service fee. Landlord does not control those factors.

Who Wouldn't be afraid to find out what else an argumentative character like that would be expecting more in return for less than 1300.00 per month rent to him only for the right to live in his home too? The kind of argumentative character who runs with it whenever and wherever a captive audience can be found. Regardless if that captive audience is only trying to stay behind their own rented door or remortgaged to make repairs door next too.
