Bas 90 - Air Base System 90, Swedish Air Force (1986) [english subtitles available]
During the cold war, the Swedish Air Force had a doctrine of dispersed basing in case war broke out. This concept was conceived in the 1950's and was called "Bas 60" and several wartime air bases were built across the country, including road runways as backup bases to the regular ones. The idea was that by having many bases and no more than one squadron of aircraft per base, each base would be a small and uneconomic target for nuclear weapons and ensure endurance and survivability for the air force. "Bas 60" was primarily dimensioned around the nuclear threat, so when long range attack aircraft (such as the Su-24) emerged as a threat in the 1970's and 1980's the system needed further development. The result was "Bas 90".
This is an information film about the then new Airbase System 90 (Bas 90) in the Swedish Air Force, from 1986. The film shows and explains the concept of the system, including road runways and mobile ground crew.

Sweden had the forth strongest air force in the world during the 60 s and 70s . Almost 1000 planes . Made in Sweden.

Sweden is building this capability again. I saw an exercise last year from a road-base!

Viggen was designed specifically for that. With full thrust reversal, and a slight head wind. it is possible to land a Viggen on a carrier without using the bungee-coord.

It just need to reverse to the other end of the carrier, or turn around. It needs less runway for take-off than landing. Especially if the surrounding area is flat like the sea.

Found this video showing the Viggen landing and take off again. During peacetime it's only using afterburner stage 2 and not stage 3, which would have shortened the landing and take off. kzread.info/dash/bejne/mHZ5lpN6abm6Y7Q.html

Ingen bas som har existerat i verkligheten. Det är en fiktiv bas som kallades för "Åbybasen" och användes i utbildnings och demonstrationssyfte (som i filmen ovan). Wikipedia har listor över alla faktiska Bas 60 och Bas 90 flygbaser.
Anyone know what rifles those ground crew were carrying? very unique looking

Dancin'Janson I assume you mean the submachine guns they are m/45 9mm I think Americans call them Swedish K. The other weapon I saw was the ak 4 the swedish variant of HK G3.

Vårt största problem var att få våra ff (piloter) till avsedd plats. Utan ff lyfter inte kärrorna.

På dessa vägbaser så bodde piloterna på Bas centralen (en bunker i skogen, inte långt från hangaren), så att få dem till flygplanen var inte svårt. Ta en cykel bara ;)
