Bartolo Colon defying the laws of the universe needs a deep rewind

Спорт

In 2016, Bartolo Colon was just about the last person on Earth you'd expect to hit a home run: A pitcher in his 40s with very few at-bats to his name. And yet ...
... well, before we get to it, we should rewind. We should examine how and why pitchers became so famously bad at hitting. We should remember how the designated hitter came to the American League, but not the National League, and take note of Colon mostly occupying one half of that divide. And before we dig into Bartolo's mostly pitiful, sometimes hilarious career at the plate, we should establish how great he is at his actual job, even into his 40s.
This is a different kind of moment in history, but to appreciate how amazing it is, it deserves the deep rewind treatment.

No it isn’t because pitchers hitting home runs is exceedingly rare. All they can do most of the time, if they do anything at all, is sac bunt which of course requires there to be at least one runner on with less than two outs, which is obviously not always the case. I kinda like that the AL has the DH while the NL doesn’t because it means that unlike in other sports, there’s a difference between them. (Besides what teams they have) But no way should the AL go back to not having the DH.

Man, it's been a while since I've watched a Rewinder, and it's still one of the best series' on KZread. This is a story about a man in a sport I don't really care about and therefore know nothing about, and this video was able to probably bring me into the same headspace as the fans who got to witness this live. I couldn't help but grin ear-to-ear hearing that satisfying *THWACK* as his bat made contact, and I felt so happy and proud for this man for doing it.

"A game shall consist of two teams of nine players each." Very first rule in the book. The designated hitter is a tenth player, and thus in violation of the very first baseball rule. The POINT of this game, and of every other game except football, is deciding whether excellence in one half of the game compensates for inadequacy in the other.
