Artists: Rubin Quartet Irmgard Zavelberg, Tinta Schmidt von Altenstadt, Sylvie Altenburger, Ulrike Zavelberg
Complete Reactions to the overwhelming influence of Wagner towards the end of the 19-th century demanded a radical change in musical style, form and content. In France, the Impressionists created a new feeling of sensibility of orchestral palette, in Vienna, Schoenberg and his followers developed a system which abandoned conventional tonality. In Hungary, the nationalist Bela Bartok integrated the influence of native folk music tunes and rhythms way beyond anything previously attempted, thus creating a highly complex and personal style.
Bartok became one of the most influential composers of the 20-th century, and his String Quartets represent the summit of his art. The six quartets show his development from late romantic to experimentalist, expressing everything he had to say in melodic, rhythmical and structural sense. The quartets became cornerstones of the literature, and form a huge challenge to every selfrespecting quartet to perform. The Rubin Quartet occupied themselves for years with these masterpieces, studying and analysing them to the bone, and presenting here a superb recording!

Bartok knows how I feel. There is something enormously liberating in that. Its like someone holding my hand. I sincerely doubt I am the only person who feels this way. I only wish Bartok wrote more string quartets but I am enormously grateful for what he did write.

I love Bartok Bela’s piano works, the rhythmic and harmonic structure. The piano is often treated as a percussion instrument in some sense, but here we have the harmonic structure, melody, and rhythm with the emphasis on color!

The String Quartets by Béla Bartók is my favourite classical piece of all-time. There is something about this piece that always made it so unique and intriguing, and it clearly shows you how great Bartók is. By the way, King Crimson got me into Bartók in general.

Some would say these are Bartok Bela’s best-loved and most powerful work. They would not be far off. ❤ I wish Bartok Bela’s life could have lasted longer. Sadly he developed leukemia while living in New York. He’d fled Hungary after social upheaval and two world wars. He had spent much time as an ethnomusicologist and had so many ideas, but life was even more difficult after he came here, for many challenges.

This is music in the most pure form that this art can existe. Bartók takes what Beethoven did and elevate this in the highest degree of complexity and virtuosity.
