Bartók: String Quartet No.5 - performed by the Hungarian Quartet

Музыка

The Hungarian Quartet founded by András Keller in 2018 with János Pilz second violin, Gábor Homoki viola and László Fenyő cselló, aims at continuing the brilliant traditions of the legendary group lead first by Sándor Végh, later by Zoltán Székely. Considered as one of the finest string quartets of all time, the Hungarian Quartet made a profound impression in the central repertoire and its interpretations of 20th century music were excellent. Bartók's String Quartet No.5 was also premiered by the Quartet. The recording was made on 4 January, 2019 at the Franz Liszt Music Academy in Budapest.

I’d love to go on a blind date and when I ask “what kind of of music do you like?” they reply “oh, well I like all sorts, but John Cage’s Concerto for orchestra and piano, and Bartok’s string quartets”, for a moment it might make me feel less alone in the world

A beautiful crisp, clean, clear, punchy, rhythmic performance. I love Bartok. Thank you.

What a towering performance of the greatest string quartet composed in the 20th century

This is wonderful. And I love that they're all sitting on piano benches without backs.

Electrifying. I've heard good recordings of the quartet but this one is in a class of its own.

National but not nationalist, folksy but not troubadour, jazzy but not swinging, atonal but not 12 tones, Bartok is a landmark of universality in the century of musical modernity (i.e. 20th century and especially its first half). His string quartets are tours de force as well as masterclasses for both performers and listeners...

This is an outstanding performance of this magnificent work. I feel like the third, fourth, and fifth movements present enormous challenges for players, not only technically but musically. Can they "pull off" the highly complex mood shifts? These guys can!!

The 3rd movement subdivision is inhumane. And of course the tempo changes and vertical alignment in the 5th movement, especially from the fugue to the end, are extremely difficult

Without doubt Bartok's quartets are a different beast to those of Haydn and Mozart. The only way to fully appreciate this masterpiece is to see it live.

But this contains a 10 second Hayden quartet at about 29:15 does it not?

Given Bartok's nationalistic sentiments, one should now expect an interpretation from the Victor Orban String Quartet (with coughing strongly forbidden). But jokes, apart, this is a beautiful and powerful version of a great work. I'm sure I will listen to it tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow...
