Been to Detroit numerous times. Such a kick ass city. People are fantastic too. Pretty sad people have this perception that Detroit is still 2008 Detroit. Couldn’t be more false. Detroit is badass! The suburbs are great too. Royal Oak is a fun ass time.

Took my fam to Detroit before Christmas a couple years back just to help that city- spend money there- we had a GREAT time- will be back. Buddy's, American/Lafayette, Green Stables, Henry Ford Museum- lots to see.

Funny how it was a group of investors who bought it,.... well the employee's that have been working there for 40 years. Either way been there plenty of times and its Lafayette all day every day

I’m still a Lafayette guy. I lived in the city growing up in my youth, moved downtown in my adult years then moved out the burbs. Still Lafayette all day. Nothing against American. I’ve had theirs too, but Lafayette in my opinion is the shit and the vibes when you eat inside. Rugged.

25 years of going to detroit for sporting events i've always swayed towards Lafayette. I've have American many times because Lafayette was too busy. I like both but I LOVE the extra Chili and onions on my dog. It's a sloppy mess but hits the spot. that's why they give you a fork.

For those who don't know the actual story goes that both brothers started Lafayette first and when they had a falling out the "uncle" started American Coney. Also unbeknownst to the families claims that they started both restaurants in 1917 & 1914 the nephew confirms that 1924 was when the first restaurant opened up but according to food directories Lafayette was the first one to open in 1924 and when the falling out happened American Coney later opened in 1936 so their both kinda lying 😂

As someone who has had both many times, they both use different chili, and different hot dogs, and one uses white onions and one uses yellow onions. They both use different mustards also.

Ok, Prez, I'm 68 years old, been going since I was 6 years old. My father was born in 1919, and tells me how he used to date my mother when coneys were 5 cents. I remember, but they didn't tell you, there were 3 in a row. Two down from American. It was always closed, but I do remember the fights outside, between the two. And they would physically try pulling you into their storefronts. And you know Detroit Lion Alex Karris, yep family. As far as the buns go. Used to be the Blue Bird Baking Co. Made buns for both. And Dearborn Sausage produces the hot dogs. The proper way to order a couple 2 on 1, Heavy. Meaning, 2 coney dogs on one plate, both with Heavy Chilli. Now, Factoid! For years American, had a door on both sides of the Kearn block, But Lafayette didn't, Also American had BEER!! And what was the corner store, UNITED SHIRT, mens store. Just remembering the good old day's.

and the best part about Lafayette is ordering when its jammed before a local game or concert. The way they yell the orders and never get it wrong is the wild part. Otherwise dogs are the same. I prefer Lafayette for the experience and I think the bathrooms are hilarious. I got married in Las Vegas and our party of 30 ate at American. I moved to western Canada and have had American kits mailed for 8 years. Its the Rivalry that makes both a good time and good eats. This video was awesome to watch. Thanks @onebitepizzareviews Also, the BEST PIZZA was right across the border in Windsor. You'll have to visit when COVID is over. I'd watch that on repeat.

both are great. highly recommend going in normal times. The atmosphere at Lafayette when you sit down and eat is special.

I’ve done both. I lean towards layfette. I still feel like this is a racquet. They are the same, and using the rivalry for business. I feel like the old men work at layfette and their kids work at American. And once the American workers get too old they get moved up lol

Unfortunately that means you’ll have to suffer a visit to Fort Wayne, Indiana for your coney dogs, as Famous Coney Island there predates both of these. Not many people realize Fort Wayne is basically Detroit’s unofficial minor league feeder city. Even the Pistons originated there before moving to Detroit.

Definitely one of my favorite One Bite videos, despite no pizza!

Both of these places are solid, but more Detroiters like Lafayette better for sure. However, I personally like the hometown Coneys that you grow up eating at more. Most Detroiters have one of these. The food just tastes better at the ones where you have memories than at the mainstream places.
