Barrier erected to stop cars from driving into streetcar tunnel

Rumble strips, flashing red lights and bollards didn’t stop dozens of drivers from driving into the streetcar tunnel on Queen’s Quay in recent years, but the TTC is hoping the installation of new automatic barriers will.

I heard this so many times. The city & TTC is not lacking any reminder, including the signs, it is so clear. So its the drivers issue. $500 fine???? I think that is so low, make it $5,000 fine.

We have a problem in Nottingham UK where cars drive onto tram only bridges and get stuck in the pits which stops our trams from running to the most important stops. At one bridge there are 2 sets of bumps in the road, 6 small no entry signs, 2 large no entry signs, 1 sign with warning text, red lights, spikes, and deep pits to the sides and in the middle of the rails. There are no signs to say there the bridge goes anywhere and no satnav will give directions over it, its not even near a main road and doesn't get anywhere quicker for car users, And at least once a year someone will drive on the bridge. No matter what you do you cant stop people from doing these ridiculous things.

Why not remove the concrete and keep only the rails? Those trams are only using rails, aren't they?

Not exactly sure what you mean, but it's because "streetcars" have to run on the street. Big rails in the way doesn't exactly help with cars. Plus, emergency vehicles, buses, even pedestrians sometimes use the right of ways. Plus, at intersections, cars need to be able to turn onto roads.

Nah, trams can tow other trams. Or in these cases, push. They'd just get the tram back to its depot and have it repaired there rather than on-site. Of course, that'd put another tram out of service for the duration, but it's faster than repairing it on-site.

Gabriel George they mentioned that it costs more plus time and effort to remove those vehicles. And after seeing that one dented vehicle being carried away, those barriers might even be potentially more affordable than the auto repairs.
