LYRICS:
Oh, the year was 1778,
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now!
A letter of marque come from the king,
To the scummiest vessel I’d ever seen
(Chorus)
God damn them all!
I was told we’d cruise the seas for American gold
We’d fire no guns - shed no tears
Now I’m a broken man on a Halifax pier
The last of Barrett’s Privateers.
Oh, Elcid Barrett cried the town,
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now!
For twenty brave men all fishermen who
would make for him the Antelope’s crew (Chorus)
The Antelope sloop was a sickening sight,
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now!
She’d a list to the port and and her sails in rags
And the cook in scuppers with the staggers and the jags (Chorus)
On the King’s birthday we put to sea,
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now!
We were 91 days to Montego Bay
Pumping like mad-men all the way (Chorus)
On the 96th day we sailed again,
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now!
When a bloody great Yankee hove in sight
With our cracked four pounders we made to fight (Chorus)
The Yankee lay low down with gold,
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now!
She was broad and fat and loose in stays
But to catch her took the Antelope two whole days (Chorus)
Then at length we stood two cables away,
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now!
Our cracked four pounders made an awful din
But with one fat ball the Yank stove us in (Chorus)
The Antelope shook and pitched on her side,
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now!
Barrett was smashed like a bowl of eggs
And the Maintruck carried off both me legs (Chorus)
So here I lay in my 23rd year,
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now!
It’s been 6 years since we sailed away
And I just made Halifax yesterday (Chorus)

"Barrett's Privateers" is a fictional sea shanty written by Stan Rogers in the 1970s but evokes the spirit of the age of privateering. While the ship (the Antelope), Captain Elcid Barrett, and the disastrous Caribbean voyage are inventions, the song accurately captures the dangers of privateering life, the lure of potential riches, and the often grim realities faced by sailors during the late 18th century.

Nothing quite like storytelling through shanties. And nothing quite like the Longest John's trademark harmonies to deliver a fun take on Stan Rogers.
You guys never fail to please. But lets be honest, it be very hard to go wrong with Stan Rogers. The man was a true genius at writing music. I'd love to hear you guys cover White squall or The Last watch. Your harmony would make those songs so much more impactful

@@neffomp I'm going to keep suggesting it, because I suspect it's not as well-known as modern songs written in "the Shanty Tradition," and I want people to get curious and look it up (also, I think it would appeal to TLJ fans who love songs like "Eli, the Barrow Boy" and "Sam Hall"). ... Just looked it up on Wikipedia, right now. Apparently, it goes back to a Child Ballad, and the first known version is from 1636, and it's original title was "The Sweet Trinity" (which is the title of the Wikipedia article).

@@brianivany584 My dad served in the U.S. Coast Guard in the 1950s, on an ice-cutter, and when I was a little kid, he taught me how to remember port from Starboard: Both "Port" and "Left" have 4 letters. "Starboard" has more letters than "port" and "right" has more letters than "left."
Being here in Nova Scotia, or New Scotland, I am a true Stan Rogers fan. As I have said before I love your covers of his and everyone you do. You always add that little twist that makes it your own when you are following the original so close. I'm going to see his brother, Garnet, in a couple of weeks. He was in Stans band and sang on some of his recordings. Have you heard his song "Welcome to Hell"? There are live vids of him doing it at some of his shows.. you could always substitute some of the government leaders names. Keep up the good work, you bring so many smiles to peoples faces.

I only have Garnet's 1984 album...obviously, I've been neglecting him for too long. I also don't have all of Stan's albums, either. It is nice to hear a cover of anything of Stan's, but Barrett's Privateers has always been my favorite. The version on Home in Halifax seems impossible to beat, unless there's another live version I haven't gotten to hear yet.

If you get the chance, listen to his son Nathan Rogers too. I missed him twice now due to illness and I regret it quite a bit. He’s the spitting image of his dad’s voice.

@@Mr_T_Badger- Nathan performed in our Labrador venue a few years ago, during a tour where he was performing only Stan’s songs. I was in the box-office when he did his sound check and the auditorium doors were open. All of a sudden I was covered in goosebumps and the hairs on the back of my neck were standing on end. I thought I was hearing a ghost! I walked in to the auditorium, half expecting to see Stan on stage. It was eerie how much like his dad he sounded.
I like how JD leaned to his left at "list to port". A real shantyman knows.

Hey friend. If you want something to bump to that's new? Listen to Heather Alexander/Alexander James Adams (it's the same person) I am NOT joking when I say Alexander was and IS the soundtrack to my life. Every major event. Every car ride with dad. Every high and low. Trying to sleep as a kid my dad played Alexander every night. Seriously listen to Alexander. He does children's songs and war songs and if you like loud bass? Go give him a listen. But just a warning, he, being seemingly a mild mannered sweet folk singer of a bit chaotic like the fey (that's his stage persona) hits decibels higher then pantera. You'll blow your speakers if you play it full volume. Ive killed a few myself that way listening to March of cambreth.
One of my favorites of the ones you all do on stream! Love how into it Robbie gets. :) Well done!
You finally did it! After so many requests for it! And it was fantastic as always! Your videos always make me happy!😀
