    funny enough I just searched surf leggings on the Florence Marine website earlier today... I saw Nathan wearing them and I knew I had to have them for Indo. Sadly, they didnt have them on offer that I could see yet... and coincidentally you mention Florence Marine offering them up as I'm typing this. .. Those boys are definitely influencers of today. Nathan made the right move. In a world of doom and gloom economic forecasts... the Florence boys make the future look bright. Congrats on John John for his baby next month fingers crossed.

    Couple things (and I am not a physicist or psychologist so keep that in mind): Yes, technically webbed gloves have more surface area which means you have a larger “paddle.” A larger surface area could provide greater thrust, but only if you can take advantage of it by providing the needed added muscle power. However, that’s also the reason they could cause injury, that larger surface area will require more force and you end up hurting yourself easier by stressing the muscles. The other end of the equation is how much surface area is added: how large is your hand, how much more webbing is being provided by the glove (is it the entire hand to the fingertip or just an additional percentage), and how wide are the finger webbing areas. All that will come into play, so it may be de minimus, others it might add up. Secondly, Kelly is going to go through a transition time in his life. He is going to have a newborn at age 50+, so all those days of working out and surfing twice a day for hours, that’s all going to be coming to a crashing end if he intends to be an actively involved parent. Nighttime diaper changes, doctors appointments, just the day to day of living with a newborn will take its toll. He has to make a conscious decision: help raise the child or continue to devote his entire energy to professional surfing. As an outsider looking in he may be able to get a little balance: I’d say he can pick up a few events where he still has a relatively higher chance of winning and focus on those, his next win (if it ever comes) would be the perfect opportunity to gracefully fade into the sunset on a wave of his own choosing. The other point is he does not have to completely remove himself from the surfing community, given a chance he could make a decent commentator or podcaster. A lot of people would listen to an podcast where he is interviewing the best and brightest in today’s surfing world, ISA and WSL. He should have quite a few other sources of revenue if he received and acted on decent financial advice, if the revenue off his endorsements and investments are enough, he might just be able to sit back and enjoy the rest of his life. I hope he can sit back, enjoy parenthood and live/surf on his terms, though he is driven and I don’t think giving up pro surfing will come easily…

    No need for anything to come to a crashing end. I decided to try not letting being a father interrupt my surfing and then sacrifice as (if) needed. Turns out I never had to sacrifice anything and in fact being a father has always increased my passion for surfing and obviously for life itself. My kid was raised on the beach, loved it, and is now 18 absolutely doing amazing. My surfing is still improving at 60. Not enough people try the ideal scenario and work their way out from there and let society dictate their game plan. No excuses only reasons.

    I started having some elbow pain when I put on the gloves this winter and first session was a brutal 4 hours of paddling. Wondered if it was the instant transition to more stress on the elbow. Lasted most of the winter.

    The "hang it up" Kelly talk is entertaining but in my opinion off base. Slater looks silly sitting next to Grif? He looks downright regal. His turns were on point and if he got the waves he could have won the thing. Perhaps you are seeing it through a "want to see GOAT fail" prism or I am seeing it through a "want to see him succeed" lens, but one thing is for sure: surfing as a SPORT (undeniable) has untested parameters and unlimited potential for all kinds of never before seen or done performance on many, many levels. Just compare most anything now to the 70's or 80s and get ready for that trajectory of change on the coming decades.

  • @SurfSplendor

    @SurfSplendor

    Well, interestingly, Kelly actually has a path to requalification if he wants it. Remember last year the WSL amended the rule book to allow former champs to accrue points towards qualification via wild card spots post-cut? Well, if Kelly wins and semis at Cloudbreak and Teahupoo, that earns him enough points to qualify for 2025! I wouldn't put it past his ability nor his desire.

    @@SurfSplendor Absolutely. A somewhat separate topic than what I brought up but very correct. I doubt however that he will continue as a serious competitor. His unprecedented engagement with the surfing public shows he does care about popular opinion. He is not only listening to "yes men" like several of our recent world champs who appear completely insulated and myopic. There is enough of the type of talk online similar to what you guys are throwing around to discourage him and/or say "you guys don't deserve me"- which I would agree with. If all he heard was "let's see how long you can do this" there would be a better possibility of- realistically in my opinion- being emboldened to attempt to do so.

    On Kelly not retiring. When great athletes from other sports do or don't retire one imagines the decision hinging on giving up an admired fun super well paid job. What is Kelly giving up? The chance to compete in an obscure sport that is poorly run and mired in controversy. WSL surfers don't make much money, they aren't treated well (they don't even get parking at events?) and not many people pay attention outside the core fanbase. The goat, true to the name, suffers from a lack of creativity in imagining a more interesting life or is sadly addicted to public attention. I think if you ask 'am I a kook?' you surely are. And we're all kooks in our own way; look at pro surfers at formal dress occasions. It's shocking.

    Most people don’t know how to surf lifestyle. These surf culture representatives in podcast form are so non professionals talking professional sports of any sport. These guys don’t truly know how to surf or surf lifestyle. There’s less than 5 surfer airline employees in the world, I was the top tiger of the food chain and I don’t eat condiments and still get barreled over 50. All done easy.

    i,m guessing the 70's n 80,s trend of consuming a micro dose before surfing or going to a club with your friends was before your time. you might want to give a try and you maybe surprised when the crowds and kooks don't ruffle your feathers and your sesh is uniquely enjoyable. It may not be something you do before every sesh but then again, with the crows and kooks in the water these days it could become a ritual. work
