Barrel Stove - FAIL!
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
For my first video on the new channel, I'd starting with a project failure.
Making a barrel stove is a popular project on KZread. I have several piles of brush in the yard that needed to go, so I thought this would make a good first video project.
Unfortunately many of the makers who have done this in the past have neglected to show their failures. After experiencing mine, I contacted a few that used the same paint as I did and was told they ran into the same issue.
I'm posting this so that you can learn from my mistake.

It really wasn't a paint failure. Engine paint isn't designed for the higher temperatures of a stove. It was more of a builder failure for using the incorrect paint for the job. But it's still a cool stove; just not cool enough for the paint.

I see what you did there at the end lol funny guy that was a great comment my friend
If you do want color for your stove, use VHT ceramic coating. It's good up to 2000 f. It is used for car and motorcycle exhaust systems. I used it on my rocket stove with some degree of luck and it's been on the stove for almost two years.
Thank you for the honesty! Great job and keep it hot! :)
you need to use actual stove paint..but first you take it out and light it before painting it..get it blazing hot to burn off all the paint already on it.. either stove paint or maybe high heat header paint..engine paint is only good to around 400..
Gotta burn the existing paint off first or you wont get adhesion with the hi-temp paint, and try using actual stove paint, fairly certain engine paint isn't rated for a 1000-1200 degree wood fire.
Lol. It *was* a pretty sweet paint job. Color scheme looked cool.
Great build video and hopefully you got the paint issue sorted out. Doesn't seem like a fail to me, stove got nice and hot and will certainly eliminate brush piles year after year!
when I set mine up I did not paint it. as it sat over the summer it did get rust build up so I will be painting it for next winter. I waited too long to put mine in and did it the night it got cold. I love the stove kits. they are great and cheap. definitely suggest that if you want a wood stove go this route
The paint failed because you did not burn off the old paint FIRST......you must assemble barrel stove, then light it and burn off all the paint that was on the barrel then repaint with extreme high temp paint.
it looked so cool orange and black
Thanks for advice 🌹
A little tip: let the angle grinder blade do the work instead of trying to force it through. If the blade does have a crack or chip that is when things can go south.
we all ooops. great vid
I have another old barrel to cut up and put inside for a liner . As I understand they burn through the bottom. E bay sells a grate for these because I plan to add some coal, but I may try furnace cement first somehow. Also I am putting up a small metal shed 10 ft from the house and HVAC tube w fan, into the basement. Will see !
You did a great job on everything, but you should have stripped the old paint from the barrel, that is what failed, but can be easily fixed.

Yup
Stove black is the only paint I would use. But honestly they get so hot that no paint is better.
well damn !! I went to your channel to see what you did next, LOL only 1 video on the channel haha
you forgot to strip the old paint and clean the barrel before adding new paint.
You did not burn or remove the original paint off the barrel before you put the high temp paint on. So the old low temp paint under the new paint burned off when it got hot taking the new paint with it.🤔
It ain't a fail if it keeps you warm!
Good to know...I'm more concerned about why there seems to be smoke coming from the bottom instead of going out the top. This would be a disaster if it was used inside a shop or something.
Im sure someone touched on this already but here it goes. There are two things that are majorly wrong with the assembly and or construction of this stove. 1. The paint from the old barrel MUST be burnt completely off and the barrel NEEDS to be completely stripped and prepared for high heat paint. This process was skipped. 2. The barrel that you are supposed to use is a sealed barrel. I do not know if you could locate one or not, but that is the kind you are supposed to use. Aside from that everything looks fantastic. You took your time and made sure that everything was lined up and cut evenly. Hopefully you can get the paint issue sorted out and the removable lid doesn't cause you any issues. (that can always be sealed with stovepipe sealant if need be.
I just did mine over the weekend and I wanted to paint it but I decided not to but what I did was before I put it in the garage I started a fire inside of it outside so the heat with stripped the original paint and didn't paint it I'm leaving it bare metal
I have wasted quite a bit of money on various high temperature paints to paint my barrel fire pit and all of them peel off once steel gets red hot, which happens frequently on thin wall steel drums. Only difference is, those high temp paints don't emit vapors.
Nice!
That's exactly why they sell stove paint, other than that you need to strip any old paint off the barrel prior to using the stove paint.
In my experience, even the best high temp paint can't withstand extremely high temperatures for long. There could be some fairly new products out there I'm not aware of too. It isn't my profession, so I'm no expert.
Do they make brick liner kits for these barrel stovess?
I'm pretty sure he did use heat paint .....you see the problem is that he didn't remove the original black pain from it so that burned off under his fresh coat of orange :( still a great project tho ...two thumbs up,for me
Suppose to use header paint not high temp that maxes out like 500 and header is like 1500
Engine paint is only good up to 500 degrees F. VHT high heat paint would be better.
I would have never even bothered to paint it in first place. Just saying.....
Dang. Thats a shame
Damn it man
DAH!!!!! THAT CAN IS GONNA GLOW RED... How did you not know that...
you needed to burn the old paint off first
your suppose to burn the paint off outside
Engines run about 220 when they are at their hottest..... fires burn cold at 500+ degrees
blaze orange, safety first lol
only the paint fails, the others work well.
Theirs paint for grill made to be in fire still I think eventually the paint won’t last but look up grill paint.
That's because you used Fire Red paint colour. Had it been green or blue it would have been ok. ;) Cheers.
Choke is to low down the pipe and you have tape on it it will burn that right off hope you aren't using galvanized pipe too it is toxic when burned
where I can get the kit for The Barel

Jose Gallegos Home Depot has it online for about 60 bucks
Can’t fault a guy for using Chevy orange on everything he owns lol
POR heat paint.
I have a saying..Do it correctly the first time or don't do it at all.
Flat black wood stove paint or just burn off the paint. Sorry this happened to you.
HVT. MAKES 2000° paint.. But even that will burn off that application. Hell that barrel its self is gonna burn away in about a year
you do not want it to smoke lik e in your house or shop you need hi temp paint
Did it smell like a new car
Good evening I wanted to know if the fire did not risk to drill the steel of the barrel?
@ROTAXD

Yamashi1983 Thib yes, eventually the high temperatures will cause the bottom of the barrel to fail. Lining them with sand or fire brick will go a long way to keep these stoves in working order for a long time. A friend of mine has had his in his shop for nearly 20 years.

Exactly what is your question? (How can a fire risk to drill?)
Engine paint is not stove paint
First of all, the directions for every barrel stove hit say not to ever use an open top drum as you cannot regulate the airflow/dampen down the fire. Second of all, block paint is rated to what, maybe 450 degrees. The surface of those barrels quickly exceed 800 degrees on an average burn. They'll see 1000+ if you're burning shit wood like pine. Btw...nice skirt there princess. Smh

Its a kilt... nothing wrong with a man who is comfortable with his heritage.
Lose the tool skirt!
Maybe more of a pants fail.
Paint didn’t fail- u did not clean the old paint off the drum you need to get to bare metal clean any residue with alcohol then paint Hight heat paint over the bare metal - if you paint over residue or old paint it will fail ! Need to be on bare metal
Dude didn’t know what type of paint to use really?
lol
BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAH
Slow down... Slow down the process and keeep it slow and low....
duh . Anyone who would do that should not be allowed to play with matches.
your door looks off centered
Should of used a roller
