Back in the day, was really impressed that the off-road motorcyclists decided to let us mountain bikers have pretty exclusive use of their trails that we were riding on. I suspect that the main reason was that they didn't want to be surprised by much slower riders on the trail, but it was appreciated.

It's not just the littering, it's how they rip up the trails. Simply put, SXS can go faster than the trails can handle them. They whip through all the twists and turns, tearing up and washboarding the road as they go. But yeah, then they start going off the trails, breaking down, leaving crap everywhere and making it a hassle for the county. Then eventually they look at the money they're burning maintaining it and say "alright, no more"

I wonder how much one of these recoveries cost. It's late at night, at treacherous terrain, in the middle of nowhere, two vehicles, a trailer and a winch are required, multiple personnel, and including the drive to and back from the recovery lasted about seven hours. I don't see how this can cost any less than 700 dollars. Which of course is cheaper than abandoning the vehicle, and may be covered by insurance so the customer pays nothing

They're actually amazing in their capability straight from the factory. Having been off roading for over 40 years, I much prefer them to trucks. In my experience they break a lot less in similar conditions, for the most part they're easier to work on and tend to be a lot cheaper to repair when they do need it. On the other hand the UTV's tend to be so capable that it's common to see people do some really foolish stuff in them, often involving a lot of speed. Physics still apply and momentum, vs solid objects results in broke, bent, and mangled parts.

He’s mentioned in the past that he charges a set rate for each recovery vehicle but has never said what those rates are. Getting stuck is the only way to find out. Based on every clients reactions, none of them seem too miserable. Most are just happy anyone was willing to come get them. Also, at least half the crew is KZread related and I doubt the customer has to cover their time.

"crazy expensive" is relative in the middle of the night, in the middle of nowhere, with the potential for someone to get really hurt, equipment damage, limited options as far as who has the equipment and know how to do a recovery in any given area. Insurance probably covers most of these recoveries.

I had to pay for an off-road recovery last year. It was in Utah but not done by Winder I can’t remember the name of the company. Their rate was $150/ HR and $200/HR if it was in mud and they charge from the time they leave their yard to the time they get back to their yard and if it was in mud they count from the time they leave to the time they get back and finish washing the mud off their jeep. The final for me came to $1900 but I have State Farm insurance and they cover off road recovery so I didn’t have to pay anything. If you do a lot of 4 wheelin I’d definitely recommend State Farm insurance.
